No one knows except Jeff

It’s a dumb decision, nobody has ever called him wrecking ball in-game, we all just say hammond or hamster

Which is exactly why it also makes no sense to complain about what he’s called. He chose Wrecking Ball as his name, and the Mech apparently agreed to it (Yes, btw, Chu has confirmed that while the Mech doesn’t have Omnic levels of intelligence, it’s more than just a translator and has conversations with our favorite Hamster)

Hammond is the little hamster piloting the mech. Together they are known as Wrecking Ball.

So then by this logic
the hero should be called Hammond AND Wrecking Ball. Maybe then everyone will hush about it? lol

I call him Wrecking Ball all the time in-game.

Why is Hana called D.Va in game? Why is Akande called Doomfist in game? Why is Lena called Tracer in game? Why is Olivia called Sombra in game? Why is Amelié called Widowmaker in game? Why is Satya called Symmetra in game? Why is Fareeha called Pharah in game? Why is Jamison called Junkrat in game? Why is Gabriel called Reaper in game? Why is Jack called Soldier:76 in game? Why is Angela called Mercy in game? Why is Mako called Roadhog in game?

It’s called nicknames, I guess?

Why did you refer to Hamtaro as Hammond in your OP?

because, Hammond is the pilot, so to referto him only ,would me you are playing as just him, with no mech, while wrecking ball is the mech being piloted

Hammond is the name the humans who experimented on him gave him. He doesn’t like to be called it. He chose the name Wrecking Ball. That is his name, and also the name of his mech.

Hammond is basically Wrecking Ball’s dead name.

He chose this name because he didn’t like the one the scientists gave him.

It’s so he is next to Winston in the hero gallery, lore related.

I call him several nicknames, the Mouse of Pain is one of my favorites. House of pain (band) had a popular song that clipped a voiceline from a movie called The Island of Doctor Moreau. Only 90’s kids will remember.

It’s for efficiency. Same reason you don’t call people by their full names. re-king-ball doesn’t come off as easily as just ha-mon. dum-fis is less complicated to say than a-kan-de especially since just ‘kan’ already takes two mouth positions to say (as in your tongue is in two positions). Ma-key is easier to say than Winston. Wi-do is easier than Widowmaker.

Every hero in the game (atleast the meta ones anyway) has their callouts reduced to the simplest possible while keeping it distinct. As i already indicated, that hero is not Wreckingball nor is it Hammond. It’s ham-on. Soldier76 is never spoken with the number, and ‘Ja’ isn’t distinct enough.

There are exceptions like Mei where her name is just one syllable, so people end up extending it and actually saying her name properly, as well. As well as off meta heroes that are either slow or never have to be dealt with in a panic, like Reinhard is rein, but Orisa is still O-ri-sa, but if Orisa ever becomes a really high level threat that you need to deal with in a hurry, i’m pretty sure her name will be changed to just ri-sa.

It’s techically his hero name, like “Tracer” or “Reaper” or “Symmetra.” Officially, it’s his in-game name.

The only problem is that 1) saying “Hammond” is more efficient, and 2) the community has known him as Hammond for a very long time now

They wanted his icon next to Winston?
