Honest question. It’s a game. And people get so insanely butthurt. I like to enjoy my games and have fun, but having to start each match with “hey, if you’re toxic even once I’m reporting you” isnt fun, and I feel and know it’s annoying every time it’s put in the chat.
Please…if you’re one of those people who think it’s okay to be a douche on a video game, reconsider your actions.

Since they introduced Mercy into the game in season 6, I cannot stop getting yelled at. It’s because Jeff refuses to address the toxicity and just keeps ignoring it.

It’s an Esport now, not just a video game. So its competitive, people play to win. problem is not everyone is on the same page. We have , no offence intended but people like you, “it’s a game” lets have some fun and enjoy it. Then there are the more hardcore. Here to win at all costs.
The two play styles can’t go hand in hand. Think of it as a Soccer team. There are players that tried hard in the tryouts for the team. but there are players that are just there to make up the numbers on the team and just there for fun. it’s never really going to work.
This is not much different. Untill Blizzirds adds in a LFG system where players can pick the type of group they are looking for, Here for fun, Casual, Do my best, Play to win, win at all costs. there is always going to be headbutting.

Because competitive play is poorly designed. People who want to win games and improve are matched into same teams with guys who farm golden guns, or with Symmetra one-tricks who can’t be bothered to play the game properly.

To be fair today’s whiner baby like gamers seem to think anything/everything is toxic. 1-10 scale maybe an 8 is toxic, a 6 is just inter-team rabble rabble and is annoying but fine. Anything 5 and below is nothing.

Not if its consistent every game. Nope. You act stupid you get reported
This. The game is terrible at separating people in to their actual ranks. I think it needs MORE personal rating. So the decent players are not constantly dragged down by the players who don’t belong there.
People seem to think personal rating would make it so everyone is off trying to dps solo. Well, no one’s getting good stats doing that. You play as a team, you get better stats. Only those who DON’T play as a team would be gaming a personal rating system.
Just my opinion. Tired of being stuck due to constant throwers and people just screwing around. No idea how they’re in my games, and i wouldn’t mind much if i could just play my best as a team and still rank up, no matter if someone is trying to throw on my team.

I’m tired of the smurfs controlling half my games. You got mr. masters level and his friend screwing around in bronze and the game goes however it will depending on his mood.
“Should I throw or should I kill everyone 30 times? Why not both?”
So instead of a 6v6 you got one person soloing the other team all game and the other 5 may as well not even be there. Why should anyone que?

Easy as is, people take out their real life frustration into the online world, where they think they are anonymous, so they take it out on others. Most of them aren’t able to speak up in their job, their family, relationship etc. so they use online gaming as a compensation for failure in their personal or work life, to be able to achieve something. Maybe their Boss is an a…hole and they can’t speak up, because they might lose their job. Maybe their Girlfriend is a pain in the a…, but they don’t want to break up in fear of being alone. So they take it into the games they play and make others responsible for their own failure in insulting and accusing, making up ranks and smurfs or just vent.

Why everyone is toxic?
Because they can and Blizzard has given them the means to do so.

Anonymity + Overestimating your own skill + shifting blame to others = toxicity.

When you start blaming the customer/population the only legit place one can criticize from is who is attracted to this scene.
I would argue that, Other competitive games are far less toxic. Therefore it’s likely the system itself making people toxic.

Because Blizzard have given us a terrible competitive experience, the game is not ballanced, the times you die to some hero putting out minimal effort, yet claiming massive reward are astounding.
To put it in another, this game is so bad right now, that people are not having fun, and taking their frustrations out on other players. It’s 100% in blizzards hands to reduce the toxicity, but they have, for two years and 9 seasons, ignored the overwhelming support of the community to make proper changes.
Just play competitive like you would a slightly better QP experience. Don’t care one bit about your losses, don’t flex, just play the game in a different mode.
There is a great video on youtube that explains it

Toxicity is inherent to gaming culture, not just Overwatch.
You’re dealing with a culture spearheaded by men for decades who were defined as being ostracized in their youth and used games as an escape to say and do whatever the hell they wanted to, meaning they still feel entitled to let all of the misplaced blame and anger out on people who are here just trying to have a good time.
I have bad games. I have non-contributive team mates. I don’t feel any desire to lash out, put anyone down, or spout bigotry, because I’ve been on the other end of that and I know how it makes me feel. Empathy is a godsend.
It is not Overwatch, nor is it Blizzard. It is the people playing the game. They’re generally just terrible.

Then play better, more casual games. People in competitive don’t want to have fun, they want to win. It drives them to be toxic because they get frustrated.
There’s a lot of good games out there that can hold your time for so long. There’s also real life experiences that can hold your time much better, talk to friends or go to meet new ones. Visit overwatch related discord servers maybe.
Over everything I do in my day, talking to my friends almost always takes up the most amount of time because I find them more entertaining than most of the games I have and because I care about them more.

These are not mutually exclusive states of mind.
Stop using this excuse to let competitive players be pieces of trash.

I’m saying that a competitive mindset brings people to do and say things they wouldn’t otherwise.
I’m not excusing their actions, not that I have the power to anyways lol.
I was saying just get to other games, I was playing fallout 3 and I had way more fun playing that, despite it’s age.
My main point wasn’t even about the people in ranked.
The competitive mindset in gaming terms is one of inherent hostility and hate. These people aren’t just being magically possessed by the game into saying stuff they literally never would otherwise. Rather, these are just naturally mean-spirited, hateful, and sometimes bigoted people. As a better person than me once said, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them.”
