Why is d.va intentionally avoided for updates?

Before u say “oh but we got 2 skins last year anniversary”

D.va never got:
a winter skin
a halloween skin
any highlight intro updates.

for years now.

last highlight we got is the selfie 2-3 years ago.

Some heroes got 2-3 skins for the same event.

Come on.

Brutally honest,
Im dissapointed in this event.
Giving heroes that already have a skin another and not giving heroes that dont have one is just not a way to go.

How did you reach the conclusion that it’s intentional? The distribution seems pretty random to me. I believe they’ve even directly stated before that they just release skins as they come up with them, rather than intentionally schedule specific heroes to get them.

Well they cannot expect people not to complain when 1 hero gets 3 skins for the same event and some others not a single one.

I’m sure they fully expect people to complain no matter what they do, but it’s not like D.va is short on skins in general. You’d have to specifically pick out the Winter event to complain about, and as long as people are willing to go into that level of detail when searching for problems, they’re unlikely to ever be satisfied.

The approach that they do them as comes up is not sustainable. If you think there is an uproar now. Just wait until next year or the year after that. There needs to be a hard cutoff date or else they are going to get people who will have even less of a reason to log in. And to be honest they already approaching the point where it is kind of long. Given that we are appraching the 5 year mark.

Oh btw this isn’t just a d.va problem either she is getting a lot of traction right now because the last two events are the one she has been skipped out on. But every event has those heroes and they are also going to make a stink if changes don’t get made.

Also I am sure there is someone inside blizzard who can come up with a good concept for every hero per event. Even if it isn’t an art person coming up with it I am sure there is someone in blizzard who can give a great source of inspiration to match a hero to an event to get the discussions going.

Dva is already popular enough because she’s a game grill. They don’t have to make new content for her.

But if your sole reason for playing is to get D.va skins, won’t you just be back during the next event, or whichever one has the next D.va skin? Why is it so important that it’s specifically a Winter or Halloween skin?

If the only reason D.Va isn’t getting a skin for either of the events purely based on the fact that no one has come up with an idea for one maybe they should hire one of the many great artists who are able to design a D.Va skin that looks amazing compared to some of the stuff the devs come up with.

I was really hoping for a D.Va skin for Halloween… I was disappointed. I said, well, there’s always winter event. I’m still disappointed.

To be fair pretty much none of the heroes are getting new highlight intros since they only add like maybe one per event (and sometimes there’s no new highlight intros). Mercy for example hasn’t gotten a new one since the first Lunar New Year event. Most of the heroes only have 4 highlight intros, D.Va is among them.

There’s also just a lack of skins in this event in general compared to previous events. We usually get at least a solid 9-10 skins but this time around all we have are 7 skins, of which only 4 are available in loot boxes. So it’s not a specific issue of not giving D.Va a skin, the problem is moreso the lack of skins we are receiving for the event.

You are however right that D.Va is probably getting somewhat snubbed for skins since she is among the lowest in quantity of skins but I don’t think they’re intentionally depraving D.Va fans of skins but rather that she is far more difficult to design for than most in the roster. Due to the nature of her character design you have to design two seperate but cohesive designs for her, one for D.Va herself and another for the mech (which adds another level of difficulty as the mech always has to look functional when it moves in-game and in highlight intros). She shares this issue with Hammond, since he also needs two seperate designs for each skin, as well as Winston, since him being a gorilla limits the possibilities for creativity and his giant jetpack on his back has to be accounted for in all his skin designs, resulting in the three of them not having a lot of new skins.

That is of course not an excuse. Blizzard has a lot of talent behind their games and I’m sure their design team could easily make her a new winter skin. It’d be very easy for example to give her a cute Santa dress and make her mech resemble a reindeer. But it does explain why they default to characters like McCree, Soldier, Widow, Reaper or Mercy when coming up with new skins. It’s just so much easier to design for them since they’ve all got a pretty basic silhouette to work around and can practically wear whatever they want them to.

Multiple reasons actually:

  1. event diversity matters. Getting multiples of the same event only leads to similar skin styles over and over again.

  2. Of all the seasonal halloween and christmas are probably the top 2 most requested times of year to get skins period. Heck even charcters with multiple costumes are still probably going to get people wanting more simply because halloween. Halloween is defentily the most requested time of all because its the time they have the most amount of freedom on what they do simply because Halloween costumes can be anything. And winter wonderland is also up there for requests simply because the holidays themselves also have alot of pull.

  3. Event skins give reasons to look positively at character that doesn’t do anything other than be a visual change.

  4. Event skins aren’t the sole reason to play the game but if you other reasons are not as strong as they once were it certainly doesn’t give you reason to stay. In otherwords I am saying that other reasons are more important but it certainly doesn’t give you a reason to look the other way about issues you have if even simple visual updates aren’t also things you care about.

Think of it this way if a McCree main is contemplating quitting/taking a break they might put off that break if they see McCree has a new skin and more of a chance to change there mind about quitting/taking a break at least until they unlock it. And they might make it to the next patch/ news cycle about what is coming next which actually does change the game in ways they like.

There are more but I think I will leave it here for now. Also again this isn’t a d.va problem other events have this problem too with different heroes.

I knew D.Va won’t get skins but appreciate the new additions for other heroes since these are bonuses to me. D.Va’s time will come…

Sure, but it would be total coincidence for that timing to line up with this specific event. The same thing is just as likely to happen near the Archives event, where maybe McCree wouldn’t get a skin because they already put his would-be-Archives skin in the Winter event.

To eliminate that scenario year-round, the team would have to release 30+ skins (one per character) for each seasonal event, which is probably excessive.

Well I was shocked that D.va didn’t get a winter skin as well but I think you’re stretching it when you say it’s “intentional”. This is one of those bold claims where you should have evidence to back it up.

Toy plane. Bam. Done. Ship it.

I know most peoples suggestions are for a chirstmas themed one but I would love to see D.Va in a similar skin to Sombra and now Sigma, An Icey mech with frost coming off it and D.Va in a cool ice armour attire maybe similar to her destroyer skin.

That is one of my sub points but to go into that a bit more I don’t think they need it to be up all the time. Even if it lines up just a couple times it still is keeping a couple more players than it would other wise. Sometimes it does but alot of the time it doesn’t. But when it does it can really really pay off.

It’s been four years, I think at this point it’s fair if people are starting to run out of patience. Not that their distress will do a thing, but I don’t blame them for asking “what the heck?” already.

There is no such thing as a limit to the skins a character gets because they got a skin already once before. Don’t you remember Tracer year one? Or Mei? They sure do like to pile skins onto one character every year. Just not Dva, Genji, or Rein I guess.
