Why is counterplay only a thing after getting shot

widow was more bearable in OW1 where there were two tanks that could mitigate her, but now shes just obnoxious with the S9 bullet change and one less tank to deal with her, forcing everyone to just counterswap instead of being able to deal with her

What’s funny is there’s basically only 4 big eSports games.

Two by Valve.

And two by Riot.

And I’m quoting the top game design guy at Riot for the last 18 years.

It’s like Schroeder Cat, whether or not Riot matters to their premise of their argument.

First of all let’s change the mindset of “everyone has to counter swap”. Yes widow is strong and definitely needs a nerf but at max you only need 2 decent players to dive her not the whole team and that is at max. If you know how to flank properly ie tracer genji sombra, you only need 1 player to deal with her.

Now the reason I posted this and called greyfalcon out. All the information U have seen greyfalcon gave is that there is no reactive response to widowmaker, ie I got shot and I died I can’t react. This is true yes

However everyone is forgetting about the preemptive reaction to a widow like positioning, when and how to peek, do we have a flanker, how do we chart a path to widow safely etc.

This has not been stated by greyfalcon or anyone else who agrees widow one shot is too broken and it gets ignored too.

Game sense is a thing you have to learn one way or another, and game sense is what gives you the ability to take preemptive actions against a widow and also counter swap correctly.

Yes it is not going to fix the issue of widow being too strong and not balanced but it is not the one shot factor that is too strong. It can be the map being too open, abilities for her to reposition, her charge time on her rifle etc.

How are you forgetting “Videogames are supposed to be Fun”.

Otherwise, if the only thing needed for game design is that it’s technically possible to achieve.

Then does that mean moving 100 Million grains of sand, individually. Is like the best game ever.

She is hated by every role, being second to sombra which is another issue by itself

you can argue “but gamesense bad”, sure but if even the highest elos still find her obnoxious, then maybe its not as simple as “just get out of her LOS”

thats two players on your team fighting this menace, leaving a 4v3 for the rest of the team

That’s why I stated she needs a nerf, not just remove one shot which a lot of people are blaming.

If you wanna remove one shot sure let’s remove one shot from the game? Dva ultimate , riptire, Cassidy high noon etc?

she needs a rework from her oneshot lmao, other oneshots are fine since they are ultimates, unlike hers which is just a primary fire which is relatively short compared to building an ult

Easy

Widowmaker

  • All healing received reduced by 50%.

Grapple

  • Cooldown reduced from 12 seconds, to 10 seconds.

And what other ways can you rework a primary fire one shot? Both team fortress 2 and overwatch has a “charge to max before one shot headshot” mechanic and overwatch has 2 heroes that uses this mechanic ,hanzo and widow

Oh he’s doing this now… not surprised. I forum ignored him like 3-4 years ago after dude started spamming his tank idea or whatever it was everywhere. Turns out it was the right choice.

As for your main post. I think people are too fast to swap, but more often than not there’s more issues at play (team comp, team work, personal skill etc etc) that makes counterswap the easiest step to take against a widow. Taking cover is good and all but it’s not always gonna result in a win, and having widow be a psuedo-tank to them and taking the space from enemy squishies isn’t going to help either.

hanzo fires a projectile that actually be dodged instead of widows hitscan cheese

by reducing the headshot multiplier to 2 in line with everyone else whilst making her grapple on a shorter cooldown but it breaks when she takes damage. If she lands a headshot, it leaves a poison on them that will kill them in 3-5 seconds without any healing

if the devs still want to keep her oneshot, just reduce her falloff to something like 40-60 metres, she is almost never hitting shots beyond 60 metres anyways

Do you think the “capability, awareness, and time to react” didn’t apply to TF2?

Try swapping some synonyms.

So your rework idea is to remove one shot which brings me to this question, what’s the point of having widowmaker then. Remember you have to think of a rework idea that encourage players to pick widow which currently is the ability to one shot if you train aim well enough

she stopped being an aim intensive character when the S9 projectile changes occured

Good then here’s an idea, revert S9 projectile update specifically for her then
(I don’t even get how it affected her if she’s a hitscan but it’s blizzard)

At least that the first step

Oh yes the crackshot widows that can ignore their charge time and shoot through walls.

Lol, it just occurred to me, that I’m using both the Riot and Valve’s identical approach to counterplay design.

And I’m being told no proper eSports company would do that.

Tfc sniper can bhop, has an automatic sniper as a secondary gun and a nade while team fortress 2 sniper doesn’t have those.

In fact both tfc and TF2 sniper rifles are the same stats brought over from tfc to TF2. So your theory that you have been banking on is not even valid

You tried to use that blog post to shut everyone else game design of sniper down yet not research on the difference between TF2 sniper and tfc sniper

So you’re claiming that TF2 Robin Walker is wrong, and that TFC Robin Walker is correct?

Because the same guy designed both games.

Oh wait, EVEN BETTER.

When we started working on TF2, 22 years ago, we decided to examine the things that affected how players felt about their deaths in TFC. Our starting theory was that, for death to be a positive experience, players had to feel like they could have avoided dying if they’d done something different.

Watch the video, it breaks down all of sniper stats. Also yes what robin said is correct but let me break down kindly for you how TF2 have answered those.

Knowing who killed you is simple, TF2 has a killcam and I’m sure tfc has too( if not well it’s obv) the killcam literally shows you the location and the players that killed you.

Now in terms of the feeling unfair you got killed by non engaging.

Automatic rifle in tfc serves almost like a tfc sniper rifle except it’s automatic and can kill fast as compared to sniper’s in TF2 secondary. In addition to that, tfc sniper can bhop and use grenades while TF2 sniper is unable to. So which would feel more fair? Btw both TF2 and tfc sniper can one shot
