Why I won't play OW 2 and why you shouldnt playing too

I definitely won’t be playing OW2. My main issue is the “F2P” model, I just refuse to support this monetization model in ANY game.

Some of the younger people won’t remember but you used to pay $60 for a game and then DLC was FREE. Slowly they made us pay for DLC and now we just have these convoluted “coin” systems that purposefully hide the real $$ you’re spending. It’s scummy and really greedy. The pricing on these items is just ridiculous $10 for a hero??? WTF that’s the cost of a FULL on indie game.

I’m a software developer don’t tell me it costs you a lot to make a single character. Your devs suck if it did. Second, they spent more than 2 years working on it this and all the “new” content they have is 4 maps, 1 new mode (after removing another) 3 new heroes and some balance tweeks. That doesn’t take 2 years… so where did all the development time go? Into the monetization system. They couldn’t put more content out because their FIRST concern was how to nickle and dime you.

Just this alone should be enough to make all OW2 players quit this game in protest. But there will always be those that don’t remember what games are supposed to be and what you used to get INCLUDED with your purchase of a game. You all think it’s a deal to pay for things that should be and ARE core to any game. Yes that includes skins - if you’re going to have a progression system with unlockables… then those unlockables are part of the game

Styloza did the math already new players will have to pay $12k to get all the skins from OW 1. Last nail in the coffin for me is them killing OW 1… this proves to me that this isn’t a sequel - its an update to the way they take your hard earned money. They don’t want you to go back and play OW they want you to play OW2 and spend money there. Let’s face it even those that say “I won’t spend a penny” ARE liars… you will eventually. They purposely build the games to make you spend.

… don’t even get me started on all the red flags. F2P is always Pay 2 Win no matter how you slice it.

I’m gonna play it. If you (and others) don’t want to, that’s more power to you. Maybe all the people that have vehemently hated every change that has been added to this game since year 1 will finally live their lives and play something else.

You know what’s cool about full priced $60 games? Once you beat it, you shelve it and never touch it again.

I’ve paid 45€ for the Origins Edition in 2016 and had 1000 hours of fun.

Now I pay nothing for OW2 and the fun will continue.

At least it isn’t CoD: Infinite Warfare or WW2 with a $60 price tag and terrible monetization

Playing is supporting them. It keeps their player counts high so the paying players stick around.

Remember when anything is free, YOU are the product. Also, to note, they are giving you OW2 for free. It takes the cost of 2 copies of OW1 at launch to max out the battle pass. All those people you complain about having smurf accounts, yeah…they made this scam pass possible, thank them.

Free DLC was never the norm. When it did occasionally happen it was cut, trivial or promotional (CDPR games) or part of the deal (Overwatch 1). Even before DLC was a thing due to limits in bandwidth and file size, expansions were still pay to play.

just lmao. Such a deep understanding of game development on display here.

They’ve been pretty clear the focus switched to PVP only about a year ago.

they had 6 years + it’s just skins who cares. pick up a foot ball.

Most major F2P games are either not P2W or are PVE so P2W isn’t even possible. The worst thing is that F2P unlocks heroes later, but you can’t play comp unless you have all the characters and they’ll be enabled in Arcade modes anyways so this problem only exists in quick play.

I have multiple accounts because I was given free licenses here and there. In fact that’s the sole reason I started playing this game. I gave a few away but I also kept around a few – I feel like you need to define smurfing. I consider smurfing to be purposely throwing comp games to end up in Bronze when you’re really GM or something. The game places you with equal elo players fairly quickly in QP once you start winning games – seems to go by your stats not your win/loss. I don’t really know for sure… but I tend to check my opponents stats and they end up being right around my Rank.

this coin stuff gets ya skins and other things its nothing new

The gameplay is still 10/10. I don’t play this game for cosmetics. Gonna still play. OW is about to be the best quality F2P game on the market.

The one key feature in F2P monetization are known as “time gates”. You know those really bad RTS on mobile? Yeah well download one and play it for a few minutes. Those games literally lock construction for buildings behind significant arbitrary wait times – and then turn around and sell you “gems/coin/tokens/shards” to pay to get things done faster. It’s all about exploding that feeling of instant gratification.

That’s the real reason they don’t just give you the hero for free out right. So that those who MUST have it NOW pay. There’s no real reason for making you “earn them”.

If you’re a software developer, then you should talk with product marketing where you work.

Investors care about subscriber numbers just as much as revenue. Putting a paywall at the very front of a multiplayer game puts signups at risk.

Just look at the countless “dead” games out there that finally went F2P because they are desperate for population.

You can hate f2p live service games all u want,

but don’t tell others what to think or what they shouldn’t play, doesn’t work that way

i’ll understand why u said that if ur a kid.

Look man I understand and support people in my field being able to make money for their work. However, you hit the nail on the head with the real issue here. The non engineers who care more about making share holders happy than actually making a good game.

No software developer want’s to put out bad work out there. I feel most of them strive to make enjoyable games but it’s the corporate types that are going to take gaming to something only the rich can afford.
