Nolan Ryan. Tom Brady. Tom Duncan.
These are all players who contributed to their sports into their FOURTIES. Someone in their early 20’s is NOT in their prime, they have “a lot to learn”.
But in eSports, if you’re 22 it’s time to consider retirement! It’s ridiculous. A 4 year “career” means there is no significant player development, no legends of the game, no continuity. Just a bunch of boys barely out of puberty playing a game for money.
It’s pathetic.
I agree with your opinion, but you still have to admit it is an opinion.
Hey, we all have one. But when it comes to whether someone will enjoy entertainment and why, opinions are the only things that matter in the end. I don’t see a (bigger) future for eSports as long as it’s just a bunch of kids. It will remain fringe, where it belongs.
Daigo Umehara is kind of the exception, but he has an esports career for over twenty years.
I don’t care how corny this will come off as but ok boomer
Young punks, get off my lawn!
The biggest issue with e-sports is apart from fortnite no other esport is actually open to common players, everything else requires orgs and lots of closed door stuff.
Was about to say the same thing. OP sounds like when my dad kept telling me that video games aren’t a real hobby
The legend himself. Although lets be fair, it’s very hard to get on Daigo’s level. The Chun-li super parry with Ryu still stands the test of time to how insane Daigo is.
As for OP, I kinda see your point. You have a much better reason than the “BuT iTs pLaYinG oN a cOmpUteR!!!” crowd. Although to be fair, I don’t think age is THAT big of a factor when it comes to gaming. I think people exaggerate how age affects your gaming performance.
And now you will have people attempt to validate these people as “athletes” which to me is hilarious. But, on the forums, you get what you get.
Quake Rapha has been a legend for a while.
It’s the future man, it’s gonna happen with every generation, things change. I mean I’m 30 and seeing the transition of not only sports but of how popular video games have become in general especially with women is still a little surreal.
However I neither do I see it as pathetic or not worthy of respect. Im pretty sure when the automobile came out some horse lovers hated on it probably saying it’s a soulless metal piece of junk and that it lacks the bond you have with your horse and stuff about value and commitment. Same thing with guns, which compared swordfighting would be a wussy way to fight but it’s just normal to us.
So what if they master it in a few years and retire that’s technically an accomplishment. Good for them that they get to enjoy their lives more and don’t risk brain damage. I mean I know how unmanly it may look, but as a man why let it get to you they’re lives have nothing to do with you or I really.
Honestly I think it’s a pretty silly avenue to throw millions of dollars into when you compare E-Sports to genuine sports, but…it is what it is. I’ll never care about it, but some people really like it.
I like the IDEA of eSports. I don’t reject it outright, and when it first appeared I had high hopes. But the way it’s worked out… There’s no team, no heroes, no continuity. It’s just whoever you can assemble this year.
And in almost every other human endeavor, experience matters. In esports, it’s just reflexes and naked skill. Boring!
The key issue i have with esports more than time is most of them are extremely replaceable very few build a authentic style like in real sports, a few exceptions though like rapha in quake, kuxir in RL etc.In overwatch there is no one i have found entirely iconic in owl.
You can’t really just point to a difference in sport vs. esport and declare this is what makes them incomparable. You gotta explain why that difference should exclude esports as a category of sport. Why do short careers, a lack of player development or continuity disqualify esports as a sport? Are these really necessary components of a sport?
Most sports had nationalised teams fighting each other, but esports cut straight to the money the american way lets franchise lets call it sanfransisco shock with a bunch of foreign nationals contracted in.
I hate franchise sports even in real life sports its cheap curbs local talent.
Of course! If the only thing that matters is twitch, style doesn’t matter and will never develop.
Real sports publish their ruleset, and if appropriate their ratings/rankings system.
No transparency, auditability, accountability = rigged sham.
It’s worthy of layoffs and lawsuits but don’t say that too loud (bad press gets silenced around here).
Personally I feel like at least part of that reason is that video games are…predictable, at least to an extent. Like with Overwatch, you are limited with which heroes and strategies work. There’s little room for improvisation. In at least most other sports, the only limits you have are the rules of the sport.
