Why enforced 2/2/2 is detrimental to competitive Overwatch

Characters are designed to fit a specific role beyond “Tank” “Damage” and “Support”. Symmetra is very good at supporting her team with her ult and Mei with her wall but they’re damage heroes. We sort heroes into large groups because it makes it easier to understand but if you picked apart every hero you’d find that they’re each good at doing a particular thing. Brigitte is the brawler. Tracer is the speedster. Hog is the slow but powerful brute. Genji is the glass cannon. Enforced 2-2-2 oversimplifies and ignores the dozens of sub-roles that exist. It also ignores that certain heroes who might be damage can support/tank/fulfill niche roles that suit their team particularly well and vice versa for supports and tanks.

Niche characters are not a good fit for this game. People identify with specific characters and playstyles and want to play with them.

The idea of niche characters came from TF2 I think. Like look at the Spy for example. He has a sapper called the Red Tape Recorder which makes it so his sapper downgrades buildings instead of destroying them. This is a niche weapon because it’s primarily only useful for countering large nests built by multiple engineers. He also has a pistol called L’Etranger which has reduced damage in exchange for giving him a longer cloak duration, which is useful for when you need more cloak time.

But if you’re in a situation where the Red Tape Recorder or L’Etranger are suboptimal, you can still play Spy. They’re just weapons that modify his base abilities to respond to different situations.

If you wanna play Symmetra… well, she’s only useful in specific situations, so I guess you can’t play Symmetra. Sorry, Symm fans.

That’s why heroes would be balanced around 2v2v2
Jeff said this in the stream he talked about 2v2v2.
Many heroes would be reworked/changed.

just passing on what papa jeff said

Well I said “that suit them particularly well”.

I’m not asking for super niche characters like what torb and symm used to be. I’m saying that characters in Overwatch, right now, fit into specific tank-like and support-like roles outside of the category they are already in.
