Why does Winston's ult feel so weak?

Maybe I’m just ignorant to how he’s played in higher ranks, but Winston’s ult feels like one of the weakest in the game. Hoping to find out how I’m wrong or why this is the case (if I’m right).

Yea it’s kinda like Doom’s ult in that it’s a second life, except probably more impactful than Doom ult. You can dive a half health hero in the backline, even if you’re at 200hp and hope to secure a kill popping ult.

monkey ult is one of the best in the game it’s just very mechanically demanding which is why it feels hard to get value from or as you put it ‘weak’. if you can juggle it’s basically always a guaranteed kill every ult on top of how insane you can zone several people throughout it. it also lets monkey engage forever since he can dive in, force CDs, almost die, and then primal for another 1k health to clean up the mess he made.

I would consider it the hardest ult to use in the game. Followed by pulse bomb and blade. The difference between a Winston who can actually juggle people for considerably more dmg and disruption, to the average Winston player is huge. I like many others, jump around, do a few boops, and don’t get too much accomplished. Great Winstons not only get to overextend because they have ult; but usually land kills on supports each time they do so.

I’d prefer if they made Winston ult have faster move speed and less knock-back per swing, but a bit longer Jump Pack cooldown.

Winston’s ult is easily one of the best disruptive ults in the game, but in the game’s current state of burst damage being king, it is a bit underwhelming.

Because he doesn’t have enough health in primal to go and take the hits that let him do a lot with it.

You can do a lot with it, but at this point you’re more likely to die from burst. I gave up on the ult shortly after getting juggling down because sustain meta happened and no one died.

Because it’s easy to CC and burn him down

Back when Hog had the highest health in the game at 500, a 1000-health Winston was significant. Now most Tanks sit at 600-700 health, some with armour. A 1000 health upgrade isn’t that much. As for offence - Primal Rage dates back to the game’s original design, where Tank ults did primarily control. Earthshatter, Whole Hog, Graviton Surge, etc.

I don’t ever play winston so take this with a grain of salt, but it seems like a “Get out of jail free” card type of ult that you get a second chance at life, however…

You can also treat it like a “Disruptor” ult. If you see an enemy moira throw her ult, for example, you can ult as winston, jump in, and bat her around so she gets little to no value from her ult.

That said, in OW2, I’m not sure if that would be a waste of Winston’s ult or not. I’d have to see what others say.

i as a terrible tank but monke enjoyer use primal similar to how doomfists ult allows him to engage with everything pop ult and engage further until primal ends where i usually would disengage, very nice interaction with jump reseting its cd when entering primal (jump ult jump) and resets again when you leave primal. (jump ult ends jump) allowing for a rather save disengage and engagement if you can manage your hp.

that said Its a cool ult but a very hard one to fully get big value out of it besides getting a second chance. the mobility part is what i mainly use it for.

still remember Miro’s primal juggling a pharmercy off the map. :face_holding_back_tears:

It is a overtime ult when defending a payload or a map with a lot of edges to boop people off…

Because there’s been so much damage creep over the years, and they’ve never increased the HP he gets in his ult. You now die within two seconds of popping ult as monkey.

It really is one of those ultimates that gets better with the player. At face value it seems weak, but when you think about it, it gets pretty good. Second life obviously, and with practice you can juggle foes to either disrupt OR knock them into a corner and wail on them. It’s super satisfying to hit them, jump and hit them again, and then land and hit them for massive damage. It just takes skill to get good at.

compared to most other ultimates, it seems weak, but it works perfectly as a part of winston’s kit

the immediate impact of using primal isnt very strong, so you really have to stretch it to its limit to get value out of it, min-maxing primal is one of the many skill ceilings of winston’s gameplay

once you master it though, you can do a lot with it, especially if you save it to use at just the right moment

His ult is not meant to get kills, it’s “oh no! Big angry monke in the middle of our team”
In few words second life + disruption = more space for the team

Because it’s mostly a Utility Ult, not a Frag Ult.

And a lot of ELOs don’t punish positioning errors that hard.

Once i Saw his ult inside Mauga cage… chained outrage gorilla is terrifying picture, but mosly harmless

How to use:
Imagine a typical line up. Reinhart blocking shots, his 2 DPS allies at his side and his supports at the backline.

As Monke, you attempt to dive in and zap everything. Hopefully you get CC’d and Anti’d while in base form. Then you Rage and use your swings to slap Reinhart away, now DPS and Supports are vulnerable. Maybe you go back to the supports so you knock away any enemy thay’s trying to hide under Baptiste’s Lamp or you push Kiriko back to the frontline after she tries to teleport away.

That’s one way to use it.

I can tell you’re plat at best just by reading your post.

Please do not play winston like that.

Jump the supports and if you need pop ult as a second life and/or to kill a squishy that will make you win the fight, it’s very easy, throw them in a corner and slap away.

Do NOT waste it on a tank or just trying to make space (unless very rare case of overtime)
