Why does Overwatch love D.Va so much?

D.Va has been used as the main off-Tank for Season 1, 2 (minus season 2’s playoffs) and the start of season 3. While other off tanks like Roadhog and Sigma were hardly ever in OWL or even GM-Masters (minus niche cases). D.Va has been top meta for years, while higher skill floor and ceiling off tank Sigma has been meta for 1/2 a year. While only appearing in OWL for Season 2’s playoffs. Even if Sigma isn’t meta why must it always be D.Va?

Waifubait for the most obvious answer-anything more indepth IDC

Because defense matrix.

It can protect teammates who keep running out in front of you, it has no limit to how much damage it can block when it’s used, and it can eat ultimates.

Probably because she is one of the only tanks with a relevant fan base. Same as Rein.

mostly this,

but also this. Being able to eat an entire ult with good reaction time (or lots of luck) is pretty game changing.

That is surprisingly true. CURSE THE POWER OF KOREAN B0NERS!!

Surprisingly? It’s generic bottom tier bait, literally every game has a chic like this, and you control your body, stop wasting it on trash.

Now I’m looking for the DVA equivalent in Super Mario World

And I don’t consciously control all aspects of my body. I don’t choose what I’m attracted to

D.va can block all projectiles, including ults. That’s unbelievably strong, especially in a competitive scenario. She can also flank Widow and safely go for the supports with her 3 second CD boosters. Not to mention her bomb is incredible for creating space / getting numerous picks.

That’s why she’s played.

Because of a few reasons

-She’s insanely popular. The reason why, beyond the waifu bait, eludes me, she’s as interesting character-wise as a soggy cracker compared to literally every other tank. In a world with Don Quixote, Nigerian Baymax, TWO supergenius moon creatures, an antiheroic Russian superwoman, Overwatch’s only genuinely tragic villain with a brain the size of a planet and a fat man who once found a hook, D.va stands out as being exceptionally bland.

-Her playstyle is the definition of “easy to learn, hard to master” so she’s a lot of people’s first hero as well as one they can stick with. When I wanted to introduce my friend who’d only just started playing to the tank role, he wanted to start with Sigma because he’s my favourite tank. He had absolutely no idea what he was doing so I put him on D.va instead and told him “just fly at whatever’s vulnerable and press all the buttons until it dies” and that was enough to get him started on the hero. This accessibility comes with a learning curve that allows her to scale with the player’s skill in a way that a lot of “starter heroes” like Reaper, Mercy or Bastion can struggle to do.

-She’s also the most DPS-like of all the tanks, without the line-holding or linebreaking responsibility of a main tank or the instant peel of Roadhog or Zarya. Especially with the mobility changes, she’s very much like an overweight Genji in theory and execution. No wonder a game that curries such a fervent DPS crowd has arguably its most popular tank as a nontraditional, DPS-like tank.

-D.va’s been one of the most consistently meta heroes in Overwatch’s history, rivalling only Reinhardt and Lucio as one of the most consistent core heroes of any powerful composition. There’s only been very limited times when those three heroes weren’t the best thing you could be doing with the tank or support roles (most recently the arrival of Orisa-Sigma double barrier that pushed the three of them out of relevance). The same phenomenon you see with D.va players can be seen with Widowmaker players perhaps more than any other group of mains: if at any stage their hero isn’t one of the top tier tanks, they will demand in absolutely massive numbers for buffs and changes until they return to the top tier. That level of outcry is hard to ignore.

You know what else blocks all projectiles A BLACK HOLE! But that didn’t stop Blizzard from removing Kinetic grasps ability to block Chain Hook and Whip Shot. Seriously that’s not very broken, and it makes sense scientifically!

That’s quitter talk!
you don’t choose the gender, but you can at least choose something a little more classy…

Like the nearest bit of dirt on your carpet for instance?

It’s not alive, yet has easily twice the personality and likability of D.va :smirk:

And sorry, most games have one, but I don’t know much about Nintendo games I’m afraid.

Amazing almost every post in this thread is wrong

It’s true but then they do this to Sigma who is 1000x more fun than D.Va and NO ONE CARES! Now yes Sigma did need a few nerfs but they took it way to far just so the fanbases ever precious D.Va could be meta YET AGAIN!! At least Lucio has a high skill floor unlike Rein or D.Va.

I never said I liked DVA

Who is the DVA in Portal?

Whoever the main character is.

You’re going to say the literal mute character is the “DVA” of the game?

I wish DVA was mute

because eating ultimates is always better than whatever the other off tanks can bring to the table, barring ult synergy (zarya’s grav for hanzo’s dragon).

DM has seen so many nerfs, yet it is still a big tool to counter lots of ultimates.

I wish she was as well, that way we don’t have to hear “Are you sure life isn’t a game Solider 76?”

But you said the only character in portal that is literally mute is the DVA of her game

You see how that’s simply absurd?
