Why Does it Feel Like MM intentionally Gives you Bad Players on your Rank Up Games?

Its impluasuble but whenever I’ve gotten near plat (or Gold after a pretty abysmal losing streak) without fail on the rank up games im 80% more likely to either get a troll who throws the second somebody says anything to him, or the dumbest mother trucker currently on that server with the gamesense of a wood tier who’s reponse to not do stupid crap like going in by himself or over extending past choke on defense by himsef is “get effed R word” or some variation and just gets toxic while hyper feeding the entire game.

Like…this feels like this happens far too many times at specifically the rank up games to juat be bad luck can it? This feels like this happens almost every rank up, like some sick bonus test of “oh, you wanna rank up? Lets see if you can win with a thrower or a hyperfeeding potato teammate, see if you’ve “earned” it.”

Anyone else get this feeling at rank up games?

I was just reading another thread almost like this one with a lot more text and “research” and patents linked.

So I don’t know if you can somehow look up my match history, all my profiles are open and I use overbuff. But here is the thing - I just hit diamond for the first time in my career on DPS and the second time overall (first time last season on Healer), I played since season 3. Immediately before I did, I had 5 or 6 wins straight where I demolished on widow (my newly found main due to Tryhard FFA). My last game before diamond was hard though, because I played like trash. Honestly, I was too tired, it was Nepal KOTH with the 2 worst maps for widow (no angles) and after losing first round I didn’t have anything left of confidence. But we ended up winning the game. Because I got carried. My team won round 2 pretty much without me and on 3rd it was the open map, I could contribute a little more but still didn’t have even a single bronze medal.

How did the matchmaker realize that I was gonna be trash my 6th or 7th game and put me into the team with strong players to carry me when I was supposed to be the carry based on previous history? So smart.

Maybe the matchmaker put you in someone elses smurf-check-match and it was their job to carry you. i think most of the time it’s just luck.

With lock roles carrying is impossible now.

Can’t really pin whats wrong, but since role queue i dropped down from mid diamond to mid plat. All my roles are around 2.7k. Games are disaster.

Three years I learned to play by overcompensating teams weakness with constant role/hero switching, and now I see, that was the skill by itself that I was really good at.

Role queue punished my playstyle, same playstyle which was heavily encouraged since the start of the game.

This part is actually the saddest outcome of role queue. I like the system, but I feel bad for people who excelled at this now somewhat obsolete skill. There is merit in making one of the slots on the team flex.

MM is kinda weird tbh. Sometimes it shafts you sometimes you get crazy win streaks.

“[0016] In another example, if a player has been performing poorly (e.g., getting killed at a rate higher than the player’s historical rate), the scoring engine may dynamically adjust one or more coefficients to match the player in a game that will improve the player’s performance. For example, the player may be matched with easier opponents, matched with better teammates, and/or placed in a game that is more tailored to the player’s preferences (e.g., players that play in games more closely aligned with their preferences tend to perform better).”

No. I never felt that way when I played. /sarcasm

What role do you play?

Oh yeah, I’ve spoken about this issue a LOT.

I always get really abysmal games right before I, or whoever I am queuing with, is about to rank up.

Apparently the system does it on purpose because they pretty much introduced the idea of “You shouldn’t be climbing unless you can solo carry against a coordinated team”.

As a Support main, it’s incredibly painful because there is only so much I can do, and unfortunately I placed in 2900+ Plat again after having horrendous placements, so I’m not looking forward to the sudden drop in game quality I may very well experience after winning one more game…

Yep, huge part of the problem. Bad teammates affect Supports so much more than the inverse. At a point for supports its luck based instead of skill based.

Agreed. I get a lot of flack from other Support mains for saying this, but it is simply true. No one is denying you’re a big contribution to the team…but you are the only role who can’t compensate for anyone else’s shortcomings. Especially if you play Ana, Mercy, Brig or Lucio. If the team sucks, you’re going down with them.

Agreed there. I’ve lost games with 20k-23k healing on Moira. Sometimes you just can’t outheal your teammate’s dumb choices.

If the problem teammate is a DPS, Moira can sometimes fill the gap with DPSing while healing assuming one of the DPS aren’t going full wood tier.

But if the tanks are the problem teammates ( particularly the main tank) you’re pretty much boned. I mean, which support helps make up for a wood tier brained tank?

Pre nerf Brig could kinda make up for a bad tank but now? Forget it.

Hmm, i actualy already climbed to diamond from gold on tank, first season i made it was role q season. And i did carry some games definitely. I am climbing with other roles now. So how? If you say its impossible?

And i was flex player before role q. I had exactly same playstyle like you before. Dont blame role q system for you dropping in ranks. You just didnt adapt.

I have noticed this too! A game before the next rank is usually horrible and i then get a lose streak that takes a month to come back from. Until my diamond to master game, that was a good game.

Match Making Rating (MMR) exists to appoint relatively good players to the teams of relatively bad players, to create an even match. It’s called handicapping.

No.
It DOES try to create even matches. Which is good.

The rest is tinfoil.

Seriously, enough with the made-up theories based on your intentional misrepresentation of a Blizzard post.

Pure semantics. You’re not saying anything different.

The difference is that I don’t involve a fake negative idea about "handicapping " and write lengthy posts trying to explain that being evenly matched is “bad” because of an imaginary concept I made up.
