Title. I don’t really get why genji can deflect melee attacks… with a sword…? I guess it’s for gameplay reasons, but it’s just annoying how he can he 2 hp, deflect until he gets a dash, and then can get away.
It’s also annoying I can get a Sombra down to 2 hp only to see her translocate away to a health pack.
Why does she do that OMG?

In reality, it makes sense to be able to block melee from the front. He is deflecting frontal attacks and abilities. From the rear though, not so much. He’s doesn’t have eyes in the back of his head; To my knowledge anyways.

well. That’s the balancing of this game. Why can everyone have infinite ammunition? Why does d.va have infinite mechs? Why can roadhog use one hand to pull a massive gorilla with armor towards himself? Or a giant mech for that matter? Why can hack stop soldier from running? or why are bullet wounds being healed from lucio playing a song?!
It’s just how the game is. If you consider all of these, having a swordsman being able to block punches with a sword doesn’t seem even remotely weird.

I think a rocket hammer would likely overwhelm the small blade of a ninja. Even if it is held by a cyber ninja.

Considering most characters melee with their bare hands, and Genji deflects with rapid sword swings, I’d say the weird part is that he doesn’t deal damage when he deflects them.

Were it not for limitations in the animations that can be used in game it would look very different. If it were an anime Genji would just rapidly duck under Reinhardt’s swings while he is deflecting. Otherwise he would swing his blade with all his strength to strike the hammer in order to divert its path down a bit while jumping.
Just because the hammer has a rocket to give it extra momentum does not mean it cannot be diverted off of its path with enough force.
Its part of why bigger weapons does not equal automatic win in close quarters fighting.
You also have to consider the strength of person using the weapon and the experience they have.
I do not care how experienced you are. There comes a time where enough force and momentum will overwhelm and overcome the deflecting capability of an opponent. I find it hard to believe that Rein’s hammer with a rocket on the back of it is not enough. Especially considering doomfist’s punch is very close in design. Not to mention Rein’s charge can go through it as well and the mechanics are not different there either.
You should also consider the strength of Genji himself, considering that he’s able to push off the bell in the Hanamura shrine/garden with his blade.
Pretty certain Rein could do even more to the bell

Genji’s main weakness is focusing him and not shooting him while he’s deflecting…
There’s literally nothing a Genji can do if you focus him down, especially if a Winston and D.Va get up in his face.

This so much, take away his ability to block melee and Rein and Brigitte would make great counters to a cocky Ganjo who went too deep without screwing him over.

I think that he shouldn’t block anything that a barrier wouldn’t block, simple as that.
It’s almost as if Genji is build around going into the enemy team and getting him out, having a hero fully prevent him doing this would be the same as a hero that prevents Widowmaker headshotting.

Imo genji has so many ways to get out, he can dash, deflect and climb out, or double jump his way out, etc. he has a lot of leeway in his kit, which can be really annoying unless you have a cc to stop him…

Yeah, it makes perfectly sense. Try to get with your fist through some guy who goes mad with a blade. The only point that doesn´t make any physical sense is Reinhardts hammer
