because going off on flanks as a squishy 9/10 times will result in you being two tapped by an illari, melted by a bastion or just generally lead to you doing nothing but feeding.
people hide behind the tank because they have to, not necessarily because most people want to.
there are plenty of playstyles in this game you’re right, but not a single one of them can be played without a coordinating tank for you to hide behind that fits in the team comp.
Back in beta 2, the likes of Tracer, Genji and Sombra were at the height of their powers. So why did I run into so many people who opted to go Widow or Hanzo alongside the inevitable Sojourn? The general response that I got was along the lines of, “I can get the same results but from a safe distance”.
So if the baseline flankers like Genji and Tracer are having issues then flankers like Mei etc. Will just flat out have it harder.
So the real flankers are Pharah and Echo, both of whom take advantage of aim issues to flank.
But then you have the issue of hitscan being a popular choice to pocket amd use in support roles. So now fliers take a hit.
So now its up to dive tanks to do any sort of flanking.
Yet with the high pocketing method and the increase in brawl tactics dive tanks took a hit.
Which leads us to where we are now where you either brawl or play poke and its all map dependent.
So it just sucks because one role go hyper buffed and canceled out an entire playstyle in the game so hard that it eventually cut out other playstyles leaving brawl and poke left.
It’s funny ppl mentioning Illari when she is the most vulnerable hero to a flank. Take out her turret (that doesn’t shoot back) and she is half a hero. It’s your team’s cue to push the enemy. After her limited alt fire heals run out her team will most likely just fall over.
Because if my dive tank is getting shut down, it’s physically impossible for me to take off angles or flank on anyone outside of Echo/Pharah without getting shut down and collapsed on myself, and even on Echo/Pharah i’ll have to play incredibly cautiously.
More “standard” tanks that like to play corners(i’m including like literally every non dive/shield tank here) or have shields are much easier to take space on, less coinflippy, and make it easier for me to do my thing.
My friend sometimes plays Pharah and I have been so tempted to just pull him next to a wall when he uses ult LOL
I tried it with another friend of mine in the Trials of Sanctuary and he ALMSOT died, I pulled him too late to do enough damage to kill him. We laughed so hard
Not all maps facilitate flankers. its hard to play tracer on maps like circuit royale where a majority of the map is a 1 way. And the game is tending towards dive being an all or nothing thing.
I would like to flank with Kiriko, my cute waifu, the few times I have been able to do it have been particularly pleasant, however if I stop healing the overheal junkies on my team they will panic, do stupid things, run towards the walls, and die.
So I have to play the healbot.
With the exception of Moira at low ranks, support flank is an effective strategy at high ranks, not below.
Because if you don’t have a tank in front of you to take the brunt of the CC and overall damage, then that means you have to experience that yourself which is not fun. Why else are tank queue times so low with such little players?
Because even a bad tank can hold up a shield and get value.
To do the dive/flank thing successfully your tank needs to know how to play around that. while you are flanking
But you can hear her fly with the wrrwrrwrrwrrwrrwrrwrrwrrwrrwrr
