Why does Accretion (ROCK) work the way it does?

I mean, this is a question as old as his launch but… shouldn’t they try and make it work like an actual projectile and balance it accordingly by now?

Is that too boring…? Like i get it that its supposed to function like a beam, so it goes thru D.M/Deflect/Javelin Spear but why? Its clearly a projectile, even Graviton gets eaten/deflected why must it not but Javelin Spear does? They kinda do the same thing but one is slower while the other is faster but its just weird that a projectile doesnt function like any other.

I think they should either:

  • make it follow the rules of other projectiles and balance accordingly
  • or make other projectiles function like it and give them something that marks them as such,
  • or rework it into something that looks like its sort of a beam/unique type of projectile, cuz its kinda confusing and non-sensical imo.

What does people think about its weird behaviour? I know its sorta of a question as old as time but it kinda hit me now that, since i didnt play much on the Double Shield meta.

to counter them, why should those abelites stop everything other than beams and melee

I mean thats obvious, but its a projectile, why must it be like one of the only ones that go though it? What other projectiles go thru it?

  1. Hook isnt really a projectile and gets countered by deflect.
  2. Hanzo’s Dragon Strike’s Dragons (but not the arrow that creates it)
  3. Sojourn’s Overdrive’s right click, also weird, shoulnd’t be a thing imo.

Thats it, its weird.

It’s nice having projectiles with unique qualities to give answers to things that otherwise might not have them.

If Sigma’s rock didn’t work the way it did, he’d be pretty helpless against all the mobile characters. They are already good against him as is, so the interactions are fine.

Is it though?, I mean yeah i like that its unique but why? Its nowhere telling on its design that it should do the things it does, a rock pulled by gravity for some reason has all those unique properties of a beam weapon but basically no other projectile does, its weird imo.

It should at least have something telling of its strenghts somewhere but where? How would they even have it look like its undeflectable/unD.Mable?

I’ll just take it as the projectile being too large and heavy for D.va to shoot down in time with her matrix, and same goes for Genji deflecting. It’s one thing to deflect a strike away(even if it’s a rocket powered hammer? :man_shrugging:) but this is a literal boulder. Get outta the way or drop cause that thing is massively heavy.

That’s how I see it, not even considering any gravity shenanigans Sigma may be pulling to enhance the weight and force further

How is a rock harder to deflect/shoot down than a rocket or multiple rockets in the span of a second (Barrage) i see no logic there…

Pure Fire (Fire Strike) is deflectable/D.mable

Pure Gravity is the same.

Graviton Surge is deflectable by Genji and edible by D.M but its pure gravity unlike a rock made with gravity, it makes no sense.

It is a giant rock in a game full of futuristic space magic, dont question it.

Thats besides the point though, in terms of game logic, why is his PROJECTILE the only one with BEAM properties? Wheres is the logic there?

I think at the end of the day its just hilarious to get a face full of rock.

It would be wrong of Blizzard to deny that hilarity.

You have an interesting sense of humour, i’ll give you that.

Rock beats laser, loses to paper shields.

Laser as in D.M?

Doesn’t answer my question.

Lemme get to terms that might make more sense to you then.

95% of the things that loses to paper shield also loses to lazer (and dont forget big knife) , why rock different?

You are right. Rock should be able to pen through shields as well X.x
Winston and Rein can hit through grasp

That i can see making more sense, ROCK could be a melee hit, but at that point, it would be deflectable.

Its a big rock right so, i can see it being like a physical melee.

Look man, if you look too hard for the sense in every detail, your dissatisfaction is inevitable

Sure, but i prefer being dissatisfied with things, maybe thats just me?

Nothing is perfect nor black and white.

SPECIALLY flawed when its something related to this game’s design at times lol.

Then I’ve got a little game series named Sonic here for ya

Sonic Frontiers is pretty fun btw, so that one doesn’t count

So for Genji, it’s always been an easy one to wrap my head around: Genji can deflect projectiles, sure… but Accretion is a collection of projectiles held together by whatever cosmic gravitic energy Sigma is able to harness. So this collection of projectiles is hurtling towards genji, he may hit 2 or 3 of them, but the rest will pass right by whatever his blade happens to deflect and hit him. Makes sense to me.

With D.VA maybe it’s sort of the same thing?

If Accretion were nothing but a ball of energy that sigma conjured and threw at people, well of course DM would stop that. The way I see it… when Sigma throws rock at DM, the defense matrix eats the energy that holds all the stones together, but those stones still maintain their forward momentum and slam into D.VA’s mech, causing the stun.

If I remember correctly, the devs justification is that the rock is a “buildable” akin to a turret, and since turrets can’t be eaten, well… here we are lol :man_shrugging:

EDIT: I still remember when sigma first released, he could for some reason block hog hooks while grasp (absorb) move was active

LMAO I take it you’re not a big fan?

Never even got close to finishing a Sonic game.

What, Barrage is like 51028401 missiles at once and Genji can deflect all of them, Graviton Surge is pure black matter (or whatever gravity is made out of) and he can also deflect it with his 1000 degree knife, makes no sense.

How is that also make any sense, if she eats all of the energy (she can also eat ALL of Barrage) how come simple Rocks keep moving foward? i call BS there too.

Whatever, make it an projectile then, why must it be this way? lmao.

I see how it works mechanically though , yeah.
