Why does a character's sexual orientation matter?

Don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not bashing on people who are gay but I seriously don’t understand why things like that matter in a game where it is about learning a character, having good teamwork and coordination, and capturing an objective.

I mean what if Blizzard decides to unvail a(nother) new hero that happens to be gay and that character’s abilities and kit are just garbage?.. Will you still play them? If not, will you still just appreciate Blizzard adding them into the game? Are they just going to be heroes you don’t want to focus on but they are just backround noise that you can relate to?

What if you do decide to keep playing them despite their garbage abilities and you just suck and lose piles of SR for playing them?

How does a character’s sexual orientation have an effect on the objective at hand? For example, Tracer is lesbian but the fact that she is Lesbian has ZERO effect on the game’s outcome.

people just want a character they can relate to

can’t speak for everyone…

but i don’t blame people for being curious since the devs and writers have said multiple times that there are more than one LGBT character in the cast. when you make a reveal like that people are going to wonder who they are.

it just makes the character more relatable for some.

And for others they want “representation”

this. and its like those other posts that they want to have a character from [this country] or a map from [this country].

Not saying that they don’t deserve to be featured though, but everything can wait. lmao

It does not have any effect on the games outcome that is true, but it matters because it expands and develops the character and lets people relate to them more.

I just like lore a whole bunch I’m lgbt but I don’t play tracer because she’s lesbian i play Pharah and Orisa because I like them. I just think it’s nice background information I don’t need it but it’s cool I guess

It shouldn’t matter, positively or negatively. All things being equal, there should be no backlash, nor any praise, when a characters sexual orientation is revealed.

I’m a lesbian, terrible at Tracer and don’t play her, but I still appreciate having her in game. I like the lore/story of the game as much as the gameplay, and having LGBT content is a rarity and something I can enjoy.

I can relate to a hero even if they aren’t from my country, galaxy, species,or race. if I like a character enough i’ll find a reason to like them regardless of whether they are carbon copies of me or not.

You see, it may not have a gameplay point, but it does make a character more relatable for whatever subset they belong to. Which if you ask me is great, who doesnt want to relate better to the characters they play?

This is the answer. It is the same reason that so many people of color are excited about Black Panther. Seeing someone that looks like you represented as something great is a very attractive thing.

By extension is it a large part of the reason that many people prefer Marvel superheroes over DC superheroes. DC’s cast are like gods. They are unlike us in that they are detached from their humanity. We cannot relate to them. This is different than Marvel’s approach. Seeing a Spiderman or Cyclops struggle with his powers and his responsibilities makes him relatable to us, as we can imagine ourselves in that situation. We can’t stand in the shoes of Superman or Wonder Woman. They aren’t like us.

That’s what seeing a black hero is for a black person, a gay hero for a gay person, a Latino hero for a Latino person. I don’t personally get excited about such things, but I totally understand why others would. It is natural.

idk i think its because some people want the game to have more diversity and diverse heroes. some people just wanna know. others just do it to relate to someone

Simple, it matters because…I have no reason why it matters.

Characters and lores help make the game more interesting.

And, sure, things like race, gender or sexuality don’t make a character “better”, but a variety does make the game as a whole better. The shooter genre as a whole is full to the brim with games saturated with edgy straight white american male characters. It’s cool having characters like Tracer shake things up.

There are zero characters that match my sexuality but i can relate to many of the characters… but then again I, as a person, am more than just my sexuality.

I demand to know whether Torbjorn is bisexual or not.

Hey, it can mean a lot for someone who feels like an outcast for whatever reason to see someone who’s heroic and cool that shares the characteristic that they feel makes them an outcast or scares them into thinking they won’t be ok because of who they are.

I agree with what you think are the most important aspects of the game, but you should assume different people find different reasons to love Overwatch. For some people it really is about the Heroes and their stories.
