Why do you still play this game?

I ask everybody but especially the people who only complain, talk about their bad experience or how bad the balancing or the hero design is.

I always ask myself; If everything is so bad - then why do you still play it?

And if you’re not one of those, let me call them “complainers”, why do you still play th game after all those years? Your friends? The, sadly slow, but still good updates? You want to climb and become better and better at the game? Or you just have nothing else to play?

I’m super excited to hear about it, both sides - pleased and unpleased players, because after all we keep logging in and keep playing the game. :sparkles:

I play because I just saw the power of new Sigma. He is amazing, even through his nerfs. Solo carried a game  Would like a shoe skin other than talon, because his head is bright red in that thing. #ShoeGang

I still play it because I haven’t found another game that is so absorbing, and I don’t want to sit and watch hospital dramas in the living room with the wife

Honestly, it’s complicated for me. So, I’m going to try and give a comparison analogy, if I can.

(My apologies, in advance, for the length of this comment)

Have you ever really liked something? Maybe it’s a game or a hobby or what have you. And, when you first get into it, it’s really exciting. You love it a lot and it became a major part of what you like to do, in your free time?

Well, time goes on and you start seeing the flaws of the thing you love and maybe you get a little burnt out on it. So, you slow down or quit. But, then you hear other people talk about it or you see other people doing it and you think to yourself “Oh, yeah, I used to really love that. I should do more of it again”. But, then you get back into it and you’re like “yeah, I remember why I don’t do this as much anymore.”

That’s kind of OW for me, these days

Like, when I think about OW, I remember the cool characters and lore stuff and it reminds me why I like it. Or, I see someone playing it and it makes me want to fire it up, but when I do, I’m like “Oh, yeah, that’s why I haven’t played recently”

Now, maybe people have these feelings for different reasons. Maybe they liked old OW and hate Role Q/Q times. So, they get a “I want to play Reaper today” feeling, the fire up the game, wait in a long Q and then are like “Yeah, I remember why I don’t play this as much, anymore”. Or, maybe they’re frustrated with the balence of a Hero they like. Or, maybe they are bored playing the same maps/heroes/game modes over and over and want to do/play something new and fresh, within the game. There could multiple reasons why one feels this way. But, deep down that doesn’t mean they don’t love OW as an idea/IP/what have you, it’s just that there are certain things about it that frustrate them or don’t entertain them, like it used to. And one on hand, they still like the game (just not everything about it) and don’t want to “Chuck it in the bin” with other things they don’t like anymore. But, on the other, they find it a challenge to actually sit down and play it, due to said frustration or boredom.

Honestly, I feel much that way, right now. Take LNY, for example. I liked CtF Blitz and wanted the new cosmetics. It gave me more of a reason to play. Something a little new and exciting to do/play for (even if it was just a slightly changed game mode and some skins). But, now that it’s over, I don’t feel the ambition to really play. I still like the game, as a whole, but when I pick it up, all I think is: “same modes, same maps, same Heroes, same balence problems. Ehh, i’ll just get my daily loot box/weekly arcade boxes and log off.”

And, I’m sure I’ll feel a similar way when Archives hit. Yeah, we aren’t getting a new mission, but I really enjoy the PvE (Especially, retribution, because it’s the only place I can actually play as Gabriel Reyes, and not “just” Reaper) and we only get those twice a year (Anniversary and Archives). Plus, I’m sure there will be new cosmetics I want and so on. But, once the event ends (assuming nothing new comes along), I’ll feel the same way until anniversary, and then I’ll feel the same way until summer games and so on, until we get new stuff (which probably won’t be until OW2, and we don’t even know when that’s coming).

So, for a lot of us, I don’t think it’s that we downright hate the game and just refuse to quit. If anything, it’s quite the opposite. We still love the game, at its core, but find it difficult to keep playing for whatever reason. But, we want to play it, overall, it’s just other things can deter that desire (frustration, boredom, etc). So, until those things are addressed, it makes it hard to: pick up the controller/KB&M, start playing, and actually enjoy yourself.

TL;DR: Dopamine enslaves us.

Because the game could be SO MUCH BETTER but the devs have been anti-fun ever since the release.

I mean if we’re really breaking it down to nuts and bolts, you’re not wrong

As someone who is in between the complaining and non complaining crowd a Huge Factor of why I still play this game is my GF who still loves it (until the toxicity starts again which is the moment she stops enjoying the game for the day and stops). So we play around 1-4 hours a day.

Another thing that still keeps me playing is me having an issue with collectible stuff so I try to collect all the skins and stuff (only missing blizzcon Bastion and Winston afaik).

Also I hope Blizzard stops nerfing my Heroes but thats probably something thats not gonna happen anytime soon

I can help you soothe the pain bro I’m a professional psychiatrist and I’ll teach you not to become a gaming addict and prevent for future relapse.

Usually I play other games, ow is supposed to be SOMETHING FUNNY to play when I have nothing better on my pc, bud sadly smurfs and a c…p qp matchmaking made this ‘‘have fun’’ thing impossible.

I dont have any

Less so, the games toxic anyway. More heroes would be nice tho

Ive already reached GM, what else is there to achieve :^)

Id say this is most likely the case but I actually do have things to do

I guess I just kind of like the game even tho it can be very frustrating so I stick around

I love this game. Met friends irl because of this game and have a character to relate to rein, because normally I’m not so good at traditional dps. Oh and I’m an anime geek so dva, sombra, mercy and brig are hot.

people who complain and talk about their bad experience
Dont hate this game they probably love this game more than the person no complaining.
They put their love and passion for this game so it can improve.
(thats for most of them)

because it’s easy and it’s fun?

I have nothing else to play.

And OW is one of the best FPS games out there.

i actually found really nice players. the few gems if you will. and no i’m not playing for their sake; despite all these issues between critics and complaints. more like this is more of a place i go to get frustration off from irl, but to encounter in-game struggles/dynamics/politics not in its mechanics more so more of the players who just take their gaming to a kill or be killed attitude just stressed me more. if anyone advise me, why not quit or move to another game. well, there are games out there that i like for sure, but i have exhausted them in the past, i returned to OW, YEARS after i first started out. most of the peers i met have long left OW or have became top tier or high level players than when we used to. impressive tenacity and diligence i’ll give them that. but also, i keep my games in some sort of cycle; so i don’t get bored of one too quickly. but despite all that. OW have significantly changed over time since i was last actively engaging in all its functions. it becomes purely a competitive and critic central if you ask me. complaints are less of a concern, because some players raise good points when they complain; of course i know many more who complains are just either unsatisfied or angry with how OW changed or became of - can you really blame them?

p/s: love cheesecake btw  the dessert i’m referring to
