The whole lobby is penalized by having their time wasted when people can freely leave and requeue. Leavers will leave if they can, so they have to be prevented from rejoining. This is only a problem for people who leave frequently, not people who have real issues come up occasionally. Match shoppers should be penalized.
Poor sportsmanship is the problem. Most modern team-based games have leaver penalties for that reason. Even if the game was perfect, people would leave if they weren’t winning.
Idk i mean its also not hard to just stop playing if the game makes you that upset. I don’t understand why people still play if they leave half the games they enter
You know, sometimes I wonder what the Venn diagram of people who complained about backfilling and people who now complain about leaver penalties looks like.
It would not surprise me if it was nearly a circle.
This is what I find odd about the complaints.
IRL if someone keeps being a bootyhole when things don’t go their way or bailing on plans, then you stop involving them (in a game they’d be benched). The natural and intuitive response to excessive poor behavior has always been avoiding or ostracizing.
This is literally just a system that automates it so that 9 people don’t have to individually avoid someone after a game. The end result is the same, because eventually no one would want to play with them; the automation just makes it faster.
It’s just wild to me that everyone else can handle the “tough” situation, but these people want exceptions…
Because leavers suck and they deserve it.
If you bail on your team, you deserve to be penalized. That means another player has to fill into the game you left, and there’s a special layer of hell reserved for people who force other players to do that. And a layer of extra-hell for people who do that just as your team is about to lose.
we should increase the punishment to really encourage people to not leave.
I would be down to Quadruple the punishment at least. because i have never even seen this new leaver penalty ever.
Modern team based games pale in comparison to previous owned ones. Just because some losers get their fee fees tangled doesn’t make or break a game

My ego is keeping me from from enjoying my match because one person who can’t handle losing a fight decides to leave and grinds the match to a halt for everyone else?
I just have never seen these mystical leaver penalties. So I don’t see a big issue with increasing them. just my opinion.
Blizz is still pretty lenient, all things considered.
My only Leaver Penalty to my memory was in PALADINS, and that was off of hardware issues. It has never happened in this game, but I guess I’m not a serial quitter.
This is why quick play is so crap. People like op. Go play bots.
The issue was waiting through 5 or more backfills for a single backfill who would deing to stay. Sure we got a backfill within 10 seconds, they load in and leave. 19 seconds. Wait another 10 or 15 seconds for backfill, rinse and repeat. 43 seconds without a 5th teammate and no guarantee that the third backfill stays.
5 backfills leaving is closer to 2 minutes without a 5th teammate.

So many people left immediately upon realizing that they were backfilling, that it felt the same as if the backfill system didn’t exist.
People always bring up the “there’s backfill, we should be allowed to leave” or “why are there penalties when there’s backfill?”
For the simple reason that the leavers broke the backfill by leaving backfill games. If every backfiller leaves the match, why have backfill at all?
“Let me opt out of backfill” or “i only leave backfills”.
If no one would backfill, but people still leave upon their first death, a map or hero they don’t like, someone picking the hero they wanted… it would be a disaster.
At that point having qp at all would be meaningless. Because without a working backfill system, you might as well play comp with comp penalties.
Simply pause the match until backfill has replaced the leaver and has chosen their character. Some other games do it this way. Reduce punishments to focus more on chronic leavers instead of casual leavers.
Honestly feels like blizz wants to punish players when the solution is as easy as a 30 second pause while backfill operation completes.
People have various reasons for leaving besides just they are losing: e.g. the baby is crying, feeling ill, match is going longer than expected and they are late for whatever, spilled your beer on your keyboard, got more stoned than expected, mother-in-law stopped by unannounced and she is in a judging mood, whatever.
This solution would work in both QP and Comp.
I feel like more people would leave while the game is paused. Not being able to play at all is probably less fun than playing a match when down a player

And why is that a problem? If a map is bad, it shouldn’t’ be played.
I don’t have a solution to fix everyone else’s behavior. My personal solution to stop leavers is to just never leave. But not everyone can do that all of the time. I can offer constructive criticism in hopes that it will lead to a solution, though.
People don’t have all day to wait On that it’ll cause more people to leave
