Whenever I spectate a Widow player or watch one on stream, they would always melee. When they’re walking from spawn, they’re meleeing. When they’re not scoped in, they’re meleeing. Literally any time they get a kill, or even just one shot, they scope out and melee. Is this a secret trick Widow players do that I am missing out on? Is this why I’m trash at Widow? Because I never punch?

Widowmaker can be a frustrating hero to play as especially if you’re having an off-game
Otherwise it could also just be a way for them to focus on on the game. Some people spray the ground on the way from spawn, or they melee. Helps to keep their fingers warmed up, and their head focused on the way back. Some people use those two things to check their ping.
Could also just be a habit or they like the sound effect lol

It’s what all the 14 y/o’s do. They melee nothing the entire way to their spot or drop sprays on the ground.
I think it makes them feel cool when people are watching, straight out of the 14 y/o playbook.

The main reason why widow melee after shooting is a habit that comes from dueling tracer, tracer is 150 health, a shoot melee combo is 150 so if a tracer blink into a widow a widow can get a body shot and melee, now some may shoot the head perfect, but that doesn’t happen offten, so generally a body shot melee.

I see all heroes do it and I assume they just do it because they’re bored walking back from spawn or trying to be funny.

i see that with all heroes really. personally i only do it pre-match… breaking stuff and all hehe. during the match i only melee if enemy is low health

I might melee as Widow just to mess around outside of the fight. Otherwise, u will never see me melee unless I’m trying to get that kill that looks like they r 30 hp or under. (Close up to me, obvs. I’m not gonna melee the sky now, am I? So close to me, 30 hp or under, that’s when u will legit see me melee in a fight. Even then, that is a rare occasion.)
They saw pro players do it. They don’t know WHY pro players are doing it, but they’re gonna do it anyway even if they’re in bronze.
And I’m pretty sure pro players do it to keep a high APM and some sort of internal clock with which they can “program” certain actions. For widowmaker, possibly they melee and spray at the right amount of time to do a 67% charged shot, which can kill a 200 HP target.
I like seeing her tattoo, it’s why I do it with Ashe too funnily enough.
I blame bunny hopping back in Half Life 1, which was preserved in mods like CS. That got me into the habit of jumping all the damn time, and I’ve dealt with that partly by transfering the habit onto constant meleeing.
They do it for the same reason why Rein & Brig players endlessly swing at nothing
It’s better at finishing the target than using the smg. Plus most characters like to be in your face; the hit box on melee makes those low HP targets get out of your face.
