Why do we have a rank AND a hidden MMR?

Explain the thought process to me like I’m 10 years old. Because I don’t get it.

I go to school and get grades. Not “visual grades” and “hidden grades”.
I go to check my credit score. I have one credit score. Not a “visual score” and a “hidden score”.
I go to work and I get paid. I don’t get a “visual amount of money” and an “actual amount of money”.

Why the hell do we have two systems and why are they so disconnected? Why would the devs only reset ONE for the launch of overwatch 2? Make it make sense. Because it doesn’t. I should have ONE NUMBER that gives me an understanding of where I’m at. Not one that I can’t see and one that I can see but might not be totally in line with the one I can’t.

So they can manipulate the game, there is no other reason. It’s exactly what it seems like it would be.

I guess they want to make the game as 50/50 or as fair as possible.

But at the same time they want you to grind for your rank.

It’s just my speculation though.

That’s crazy because I’ve played 8 games tonight and every single one of them has been a loss due to a silver/gold being on my team.

I actually think Overwatch has created a new game genre on accident - A first person shooter where the object of the game is to figure out what the hell is going on with the matchmaker. That’s practically all anyone is doing anymore.

You know as simple as this thought experiment, the only logical conclusion IS to manipulate your experience.

For what? to make balanced games.

Is it doing that? Well to me… the pattern is too obvious, win (maybe a streak), you loose down. People talk about coin flips have the same streak pattern… but you know I dont think it does… I dont think a coin would flip heads 8 out of 10, then flip 7 tails, then flip 8-10 heads again. I think it would be a mix? MAYBE a streak one or the other than back to mix… this is pure Heads… then pure tails… very strange, and very boring.

People argue, oh its human behavior… well if its human behavior throwing off the system, then why try? Technically a perfect system would still be subject to human behavior, its a lose-lose situation. Here… its try, lose to make a believable system, and lose to human behavior… very dull…

In CS sometimes your so close to something you have to take a step back instead of zoom focus 24/7… Let lose to randomness and sure enough I bet it will be a better mix of wins and losses.

That’s crazy because not a SINGLE game tonight has been balanced. I played 10+ games tonight and only ONE was a win. The other games were EXTREMELY lopsided with no chance of winning or even a fair game.

Blizzard’s team is dog. Everyone on it should be fired. I’ve said it once and been banned from the forums but I’m willing to say it again.

They don’t care about player experience. They don’t care about fairness when it comes to matchmaking. All they care about is queue times and the 50/50 winrate. Everyone one the team should be disgusted with themselves. Ban me again to prove my point, cowards.

for real I had 5-4, 5-3, 5-2 consecutively and not being rewarded for good performance with any rank up not even one pip

I was instead given doo doo teams, now on a 9 lose streak (I put the game down several times lol I don’t get tilted at this point I’m just playing to farm gold weapons)

I just don’t get it it’s so disheartening

I wish they’d rely on rank a bit more. Instead, it seems like they don’t even take it into consideration. But I think players want to see that they’re playing mostly within their rank, and graduate from there. As it is, it doesn’t matter and it all feels very stale, fake, and pointless.

I dunno, but I loathe it. Makes me want to quit. Keep getting screwed on my rank.

Wish there was no hidden rank and you gain a point if your team wins and loose a point if your team loses.

I can tell you’ve been putting in the time it takes to really understand what’s going on with this matchmaking, and yes, the coinflip analogy people sometimes use to help prove the loss/win streaks are natural doesn’t apply because in Overwatchs case I can literally predict when it will metaphorically land on tails eight times in a row, you shouldn’t be able to do that if you have a 50% chance of winning around your avg. tier.

Part of the issue with showing evidence of these loss streaks is when you’re on a loss streak the teams are so massively unbalanced that you can barely do anything at all, so showing a video of you playing during these will erroneously lead people to believe “oh you just weren’t playing correctly.” In these loss streak games you literally have difficulty moving without dying.

I’d like to see more CC’s show video of them winning in top500’s and then losing in plat/diamond to show the blatancy of forced losses/algorithmic handicapping/broken matchmaking whatever you want to call it, this type of evidence really destroys all types of arguments that people have defending the matchmaker.

Well I don’t know if you saw, but the bottom of a 7 game losing streak Bry gave me a 40(!!) minute vod:

Now I love vods like this cause it really broke down what I needed to do and…. :face_holding_back_tears: I used some of the tactics and it actually worked in my next set of games for that map.

But it also backfire proving “it’s you” just a little. 7 game losing streak and the entire team got out played. I might excuse our supports cause they did get ult fast so they have been doing something right. But they just didn’t use it.

This reminds me of what I thought about a major factor in win/loss streaks… maps!

Usually during a win streak I hit every map and get a win. The next time I play that map in the next cycle it’s a loss. Generally I rarely hit the same map in the same cycle, which is great map cycling - like to give credit where it’s due. But makes obvious map factoring.

I mention map cause I think Jeff admitted Map influence in mmr.

Now the 1 hour vod on my getting carried win (again big shout out to bry, I feel like I was whitelisted to get those vods) that game was close no lie. And probably should have lost and after that game surely lead to a loss streak … AGAIN. but the thought was at the very high skill peaks it feels if you win a game your suppose to lose, the game wants to challenge you by giving you super bad teammates.

Because if they’re this transparent with MMR and how the algorithm works, people can find ways to exploit the system or it will be easier to find flaws. On top of that, their game is much more controlled and manageable by them if the ranks are hidden. They can run any experiment they like without you noticing crap.

For all you know, they could be decreasing ‘10’ MMR from everyone every 10 hours and you know nothing about it.

League of legends has MMR, but it actually makes sense because there are League Points too. You see the progress go up and down, you don’t just see images changing. You know your MMR is high when you get 25 lp per win and lose 13, you know your MMR is dog poop when you get 11 lp but lose 19.

Overwatch just needs this, a progress bar. Not the 5 win 15 lose BS that makes absolutely 00000000000 sense. I wanna punch somebody for this

Give us Division Points, give us a progress bar that is dynamically updated after EVERY game. Stop the rank inflation to sugarcoat your new players, I don’t want to climb from Diamond to GM in 1 week because I should not be GM. We all know what GM is since OW1, why make it dumber for the shake of new players?

So so many flaws. But I feel they will eventually get there, it’s inevitable.

Rank is for you

MMR is for match maker.

Simple enough.

They are.

Probably isn’t actually happening.

Where is it? How do I know if I didn’t finish my 5 wins how close I am to the next or previous division? How do I see what progress I lost towards this division after a defeat?

It is. What was Master 5 in Season 2 is now GM5. What is D5 is now M5. Me and 2 of my friends climbed 1 whole division up 1st week into season 3.

Also try to mention some valid arguments next time.

They are.

Not they have.

(Reading the Dev update will save you the faux rage)

I just did, maybe I missed something? Please send me the link where you read this, thanks.

Weak or strong team composition against you is a way to check whether you have progressed or not. In this rank system, it will not be possible to make all games equal. Otherwise, there is no way to determine how well or badly you play.
