Like a Tank should be a TANK, and support (Moira) should be a SUPPORT.
WHY THE F do they deal so much damage?
So that we can put damage players in their place, under our boot and into the mud where they belong. /s
simple answer is to make them fun, slightly longer but still short answer is to make it so they can carry matches.
this isnt an MMO with the holy trinity this is a hero shooter, so everyone gets to shoot. also moira is not a good example of this because her dmg overall is really low. zen on the otherhand is a dmg machine.
Tank damage is situational. Try not standing in range of them. DPS have the tools to rain fire on them from a distance, where often time aside of from Orisa, they are uncontestable.
Simple. The easiest way to rebuild the tank and support player bases is by killing off the DPS role.
Joking aside, I agree that tanks do a crap ton of damage for no real reason other than they should be “fun”. Tanks do every bit as much of damage (sustain or burst) as DPS do. Since they are harder to kill and spend less time in spawn, this means they will almost always have the most damage on the team. Obviously there are some broken DPS still, like Sojourn, Widow, Junk, Torb. But those are outliers of the DPS role that really should get balanced as well. All the meta tanks have the same problem is that they WILL outdamage DPS. Support isn’t really much of a problem to me, they’re damage output is fine (except Moira, but that’s auto-aim and skill-orb bs). The most fun games I have are as and against Junkerqueen. She’s not too strong so you actually have to use your brain to play her. You have to really think about your positioning unlike most of the other tanks. Easily the most fun and balanced tank to play right now. The game would do much better if all the other tanks had a similar level of strength.
Many of them also seems to have the problem that they’re also faster than a lot of the DPS. So, not only do they have more HP and damage, they have more ways to chase things down, as well.
TL;DR I agree that many tanks do too much damage considering their survivability.
A tank with survivability but no damage is a traffic cone. They need to be threatening, not an obstacle.
You should see me with a traffic cone. I would change your mind about regarding them easily. You would have nightmares about traffic cones for the rest of your days…
Sorry, I don’t do orange Youtube.
If a tank is out damaging the dps on your team its because your dps are bad.
because blizzard doesn’t know how to balance and for a long time dps are the worst role yes dps no supp because whatever but dps doesn’t stand out with anything that supp tanks couldn’t do better (except sojourn)
dude i played ramattra recently and i had over 10k more dmg and over 20 kill more than dps because tanks are “very difficult and balanced” and i’m main dps
Why should a Class Based Shooter, be defined by MMORPG design standards?
Heck, given the playerbase we have, what makes you think 60% of them want to play sedentary non-aggressive playstyles?
Tanks can’t create any space if they can’t be threatening. Damaging is a way of supporting
I think the real solution is just to rename the Damage role to Offense or Assault.
You’d complain more if every tank effortlessly tanked your every shot and cooldown without caring and every support outhealed your damage with ease
Nah not really
Tanks can do plenty of damage now
Supports do exceptionally low damage in this game, and they absolutely should be able to chip away at you until you die, because you have the natural advantage and can kill them much faster,
I won’t answer for tanks because I firmly believe that current tank damage is the most destructive force in this game and always has been.
Because sadly there are moments when teams just aren’t there and so you gotta do damage yourself, otherwise you’re dead.
Mercy is a perfect example of a support that, if the team dies and she’s alone, is pretty much dead, you might get lucky on a headshot if a hero on the other team is at low health, but if not? Nah, you’re more or less done.
Also if tanks couldn’t do damage they’d just be ignored until the rest of the team was dead before they got focus fired and wrecked.
The better question is why a Class-based shooter is adhering so closely to MMORPG standards. There’s no such thing as a Tank in traditional RPGs or even traditional shooters.
Again, the Tank-role is a weird anomaly brought about because of MMO demands and needs to control dumb mob AI. And in order to reinforce those rules, Tanks became the only ones able to withstand that damage that those dumb AI mobs put out. This creates a weird conumdrum when looked at competitively…
Your Tanks need to be able to survive thousands upon thousands of damage and not die. At the same time, they can’t be invincible and will actually have to be able to take a certain amount of damage and die to that. This becomes a problem, because now you have to set the damage standards - not to the entire roster - but to what the Tanks can withstand. This means that damage can be extremely high, and Tanks need to be able to withstand that damage, while everyone else just falls apart against it.
You basically just create a vicious cycle, and everything now has to revolve around the Tank.
Then you look at the competitive scene, and you can’t have these nearly invincible characters walking around being walls and doing nothing else. So you have give them something that did not originally belong to that role. You give them the Control functions, an element once reserved to spellcasters - the non-nuker, supportive ones. Now all of you have a real threatening role that’s practically invincible to most forms of damage, and can control entire crowds on non AI targets.
And there you go. You’ve now turned the entire standard roster to favor the Tank. Everyone else is a glass cannon, incapable of controlling enemy crowds or having some responsibilities in managing and offer value to the team. Why would you want them, when they offer nothing? Control is for Tanks, supportive abilities are now tied to healers, and so those are the only values available. Everything else is just worthless damage that’s not going to kill a Tank.
I figure Tanks in Overwatch are just FPS Heavies. And people who think labeling is more important than gameplay should be ignored.
Tanks aren’t FPS-Heavies.
Not to mention that the list is full of fallacies and issues resulting in thinking that they are.
You can’t give one role so much power and responsibility because you start creating issues with the huge amount of influence they wield.
To protect themselves? To show the enemy dps they better watch themselves? To show their dps teammates how it’s done?
