Why do people refuse to join voice chat?

(all in comp) Every other game I get into people don’t join voice chat. I’m a tank player so this not only hurts me it hurts them. People have to stop expecting good gameplay from people when they don’t even care to join voice. I don’t even need people to talk but at least be there to listen. And if you want to mute me then that’s fine just don’t expect anything from me later on.

I don’t really feel this sense of community in the game that I felt years ago. Consecutively, I don’t expect much from my teammates or the enemy team either. This game’s matchmaking has always felt like gambling to me. Imagine it’s just easier to do your dailies then log off for a few days if the experience was terrible.

im in voice chat but rarely speak…have you ever heard yourself on recording? you sound NOTHING like you do in your own head…as a result, i know my voice sounds terrible to myself when i hear it on recording so i can only imagine others having to hear it lol

I understand but a lot of my games I don’t have ANY people in voice chat even just listening. It would be nice to at least know that my teammates can hear me and maybe try and work together.

I can’t play if I’m not in voice. But if 5 are in voice and not more than 2 words are said in 20 minutes, I’m fine with that.

I don’t think I care if anyone is in chat or not.

There’s a lot of reasons for me tbh. Most of the time I join(but never talk), but some days I just don’t want to deal with voice chat toxicity and just voice chat and what it brings in general.

And tbh it’s very rare that me being in voice helps because of my playstyle anyways.

Because the vast majority of people do not use access to my ears in a respectful or useful manner. Most of them abuse it or create a detriment to my experience.

Human beings are yappers very few can communicate properly and concisely.

The moment they realise someone is listening to them, they will start behaving differently.

Also overwatch community still is not mature enough to own their shortcomings when they lose, so having mic open is a recipe to listen to some grown person whining.

Sometimes i really wonder about the real life people dependent on these man child’s.

They don’t use it because the community is toxic and violent a lot of the time many people have been traumatized onvoice chat on sure they have in affect told others to not join because it’s not worth it

If I wanted people shouting at me, I’d get a job at customer support. At least I’d get paid for it.

You can see many reasons in your thread. I can’t verify they are accurate reasons, but they are there.

What I find interesting about the comments is this; The average player hears disrespectful things every once in a while. But a certain group of players literally cannot get away from bad mannered individuals.

In the real world outside of video games, the question for these people would be, how is it you attract every bad mannered individual to your presence. The only constant, is you.

Toxicity turned the game out this way. People even mute team chat to reserve their sanity from getting berate from teammate during match.

Tbh, I’m from a time that folks didn’t exacty needed VC.

Sometimes we typed brief things. But communication wheel and ping are way more important than VC is and ever will be.

Why? Because the game sounds are way more reliable than 95% of VC could provide and both become messed up more often than not.

Pair with the fact that they’re destroying the actual need to play as a team and more like individuals taunting and splitting individually the enemy team forcing duels.

VC was a luxury on my young days, never felt like I was missing something without it. So, why I would need it as requirement? If you know what you should do and observe your team. You pick the gist and know what they will try to do without anyone say a word, folks need to stop to play by themselves and look their surroundings and what is happening with it’s teammates.

I dunno if is your case, but almost everytime I see someone talking about how important VC is, feels more a lazy excuse for “asking folks play around me or look at me”. While instead of working in sync knowing your teammates pace not forcing following an individual one.

I would rather rely on sound Clue than wait a random teammate saying where the foe is in the middle of a match. Is too distracting and messes with the spatial sense. Not to metion that if I heard I could had prevented it. instead of folks calling their shots they could point for the entire team visually.

Don’t feel like hearing bruised nerdy egos rage because, small things like losing a video game is their first world problems.

“Once in while” is often enough to make me not want to join voice.

In the real world, I do pretty much the same thing by avoiding people I don’t like to the best of my ability. Why would I put up with any crap that I don’t have to?

Im going to give you the 2 “truths” OP :

  • The politically correct version “People are toxic dude and I refuse to just use report and block so instead I dont join at all
  • The underlying truth “I dont really care much for having all the info or listening to anyone’s call outs because I don’t need it, its actually detrimental because [insert random streamer] said so”.

Thats basically it.
Most people won’t admit that having someone making call outs does help, but there are too many egos in OW2 that won’t accept following someone’s orders, even if that dude is right 100% of the time.

PS: Bonus track . there are those in the “I can’t concentrate with people saying things in a team game so I’d rather not be on VC ever and not make call outs to help anyone else” category. Those are ok I guess.

In Europe its the mixture of languages for me and if it is a Brit they usually seem drunk or have adhd so best to keep quiet.

Quake, UT and Half-Life mods were so good, man. Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, Natural Selection, Jailbreak, Gloom… aw yeah.

I’m from that, also gives me more space to actually hear the game and observe my teammates quirks/perks.

In game tools are really good, folks just need to look for what their teammates are doing. Communication wheel were great but had it’s limitations, but the ping system + wheel are really powerful on capable hands.

I understand coaching needing VC, but in game? More often than not, at least for me, is more a distracting than actually helpful, considering the other in game tools.

Because you can get reported for saying the slightest thing that hurts someone’s feelings and you’ll probably get suspended. Honeslty it’s better to just not say or type anything and just play the game.
