Why do people pick McCree the moment they start losing?

Its almost like a default to go McCree when things dont go peoples way?

Heā€™s one of the ā€˜stable picksā€™ along with Soldier:76. Also, heā€™s very handsome.

He was a Jack of all Trades type of DPS until the range falloff nerf came.

Teammates donā€™t flame you for picking him. Unlike heroes such as Bastion, Sombra, Mei, Torb, etc.

Probably because heā€™s a pretty simple & reliable counter pick. And getting value on him isnā€™t too hard so itā€™s not like you have to be a god on him, compared to other DPS where you need many many hours.

Cuz thatā€™s clearly what the devs want

Because having a reliable insta stun is great.

Roadhog in your face? Stun when he tries to heal.

Rein train chugging along? Stun him before he scores a charge kill.

D.VA just used up all her matrix? Stun her before she can run away.

Stun, Stun Stun, and Stun.

You can make a list of easy value characters on a losing game commonly picked:

  • Bastion
  • Tracer
  • Soldier: 76
  • Torbjorn
  • McCree
  • Moira
  • Brig

Torb is the worst choice if you are on the backfoot. He is amazing if you are winning and need to close it out. Hard to stall with tracer and lucio with a turret in the back.

I see youā€™re feeling brave :smirk:

Because people have 2 main needs when they play:

  1. They want to play what they want. What they find the most fun in the moment. People are likely to go with this need first and hope it works out.

  2. People want to win. This need often overtakes the first need when their preferred pick isnā€™t working out.

The reason McCree/Cassidy is so often picked in response to need 2 is that he has a good match up against virtually the entire character roster. He counters flankers, brawlers, fliers, and even most tanks.

The only thing he really struggles against is long range hitscan. Heā€™s a very, very safe pick if you just want to win.

The more often people end up picking him to win, the less often they are to want to play him at the beginning of the match. They want to play what they want to play, not what the game demands they play.

Unfortunately, for quite some time now, the game has demanded a lot of McCree/Cassidy if you want to win.

People in deathmatch be like

This alone is enough to switch to pick him when things are getting bad.

Burst damage 12 round two tap potential with a CC with more than standard hp.
Why wouldnā€™t they use him as a fallback?
The dropoff doesnā€™t matter much if you play close to your team.
He is just so consistent vs projectile dps.

Simple answer:

This.

He is easy to get value on in general. And he counters (or is really strong against) a good half the roster. And he is still a solid pick against most of the rest. So, you just about canā€™t go wrong picking him.

Oh sure, there will be some really loud defenders that will come in and swear he is super hard. But there desperate need to believe he is hard and they only win with him because they are ā€˜super goodā€™ isnā€™t really much of a danger.

Itā€™s a really good aimbot hero and a lot of people toggle on their cheats when losing.

I said heā€™s feeling brave but I didnā€™t say that heā€™s wrong :smirk:

Iā€™d argue he easily still is - and unlike pre buff soldier heā€™s basically a jack of all trades and master of everything. He overshadows most of the other dps in their intended niches. Poor freakinā€™ reaper canā€™t catch a break. He may as well not exist with mccree in his current state. Heā€™s a great pick with and against basically every comp.

I wish theyā€™d throw in a more exploitable weakness in his kit to tank his pickrate a bit. Weā€™re like 3 years into him being picked in practically every game, itā€™s so freaking boring at this point.

As a tank Iā€™d prefer to play into 6 sombras or meis for an entire season than vs mccree in a single game.

Also Iā€™d argue heā€™s one of the lower mechanically demanding characters in the roster. Not Moira levels obviously - but the only facet of his kit that has a skill ceiling is his m1. Everything else is kind of handed to you for free.

Because social media convinced people that heā€™s an OP monster and an insta-win pick. Though social media always forgets to mention the skill required to get value on him.

Because he is OP and counters everyone in the cast

This is the problem, you canā€™t really name a hero and say ā€œOk that hero definitely counters cassidyā€. Because there isnā€™t really any except maybe widow on havana? But even then itā€™s not like cassidy is dead meat there always, he can still pick duels with her fairly easily, as his range is not that short despite what his mains say.

Iā€™m not saying heā€™s OP, just donā€™t think thereā€™s really any/enough counters to him. To me, it makes no sense to make a hitscan also be anti flanker, anti tank, etc.

He is simple and OPAF.

He is just also boring. So not necessarily a first pick.
