Why do people like kings row?!

what is there to like about kings row?! there are far more interesting maps to play on in the game.

first point defense is just trying to dodge widowmaker shots, EVERY GAME it’s a widowmaker up there.

the middle of the map is a LONG hallway, nothing interesting going on, very cramped.

end of the map is as annoying as the end of havana

why wouldn’t you want to play in a more open & interesting map?

Nostalgia, that’s about it

Don’t know, don’t care.

I just know that I get slightly more happy when I get to play it and that’s enough for me :upside_down_face:

King’s Row is a comfort map for a lot of players. You can generally play any hero on it. Also, it’s just familiarity. It’s a simple map that’s been around for a long time, so people can generally tell how it plays out.

Personally, Rialto is my favorite map. Circuit has also grown on me, but maybe that’s cuz Widow is permabanned on it at Masters+.

because the engagement zones work for both teams.

Cause people generally have tunnel vision as is and that map fits the bill perfectly

It’s like the perfect turn off brain map

Kings row has good map variety with multiple levels + paths, choke points, long and short sight lines, inside and outside combat locations, not too GPU / graphics intensive, etc… just enough to cater to all play style types. There is also the nostalgia factor as mentioned earlier in this thread.

Low skilled players who main Reinhardt love that map. It’s very basic and brainless, so you just stand there on the choke, holding right click, performing a lot of contribution passively, and your likewise brainless teammates love you for it too. Peak Blizzard cattle design.

Been playing Overwatch since 2015’s beta periods. King’s Row was always a fun hybrid map that never really leaned one direction or the other in terms of attack or defense.

And they always get their shots deflected by me and die. Every. Time.

People would say the same thing about old Hanamura too if it were still in circulation.

Compared to some older maps like Dorado which has choke-points for days on end.

In some ways, it is an educational map, like Super Mario Bros. 1-1. You really do get the basics of Overwatch map design fundamentals here.

What do you mean? It has all the things Overwatch fans like:

1.) Chokes.

2.) Asymmetric map design

3.) A big wall you have to push through at the start of the map. Hanamura was famously loved for that.

4.) Snipers do well on the map, and overwatch fans LOVE snipers like Widowmaker.

5.) High ground spots ONLY reachable if you can fly. If you play Reinhardt, you’d need a Sym to get to certain places.

6.) A high teamplay requirement

Its an Overwatch fan’s dream map! Don’t you read the posts with people saying “We need MORE chokes! MORE long sightlines!” on this forum? No one EVER complains about that sort of stuff!

As opposed to the high skilled players that play what? Doomfist? Any variety of character who thinks “I was about to lose, but thankfully the devs put in a panic button so I can run away and pretend I’m good”?

Saying this as if it was the only old map.

Hmm? Rein? The guy who can’t do anything vertically?
You think he likes that map? Winston likes the map waaaaaay more.(there’s going to be snipers, after all)

You’re spot on here Lucky! For some reason KR is usually fun although it has so many attributes that normally make other maps unfun.

1st Point

  • single choke with no other routes for ground-based heroes. Can be stuffed with shields and filled with copious amounts of damage
  • widow good on both attack (top window, top ledge, top of cinema) and defence (windows, high-ground)

2nd Point

  • one of the longest, if not the longest, walks back for defenders in any map (maybe Numbani 2nd is longer)
  • high-ground hardly anyone can get to in window
  • useless low-ground flank route
  • big archway choke where many games get stuck for 2+ minutes or end

3rd Point

  • most defence-advantageous point in the game (or close)
  • high-ground for defenders
  • env kills for defenders
  • useless flank route, or window almost nobody can use
  • most common map to get 5+ minute defence holds

These points are offset by the game usually being brawl-heavy which is more fun, by most heroes being viable on most of the map, and so on.

It’s the best of the old maps though (at least of the ones that are still in the game)

I like it because almost all of the heroes I like playing on it are good. I see more variety of heroes than the usual heroes because of the corners, pathing, and route (though admittedly some of them are still strong always, like Sigma and Rein).

I also like pretty much all of the hybrid maps except Numbani.

You get to shoot down main behind tank, limited angles, and flanking isn’t that good

Now, if only I could find a team that knows to stand behind my shield and shoot. Instead, one Damage hero will flank, get blown out and say “wow, the tank sucks”.

Now describe everybody’s other favorite map…Paraíso!

I mean the map votes show this.

Aatlis tries everything to avoid spammable chokes → no votes.
Kings Row and Lijiang Tower have a bunch of spammable chokes → OH MY GAWD HAVE MY BABIES.

Forgot about the route through the theater, huh? A lot of people do. It’s a great surprise route as you can get to flanking high ground quickly.

As far why people like the map, it might be because so many characters work well on it. It’s got something for everone. Choke points that tanks can jam up. Flank routes galore. Sniper perchs. Hard corner for peak and shoot. Something for every playstyle.
