You purchased an online competitive shooting game. Not a novel.
I don’t understand how anyone can pay any mind to the lore, let alone actively request it.
Why do any of you care about it?

Opinions are neat like that.
Blizzard is one of the most well known gaming companies through their reputation of well rounded lore of their fantasy games. They sold Overwatch with the promise that there would be a continuing lore, and with the canceling of First Strike (whatever the novel was called) they implied the lore was going in a different direction.
So far, they have not delivered. For Blizzard, with their well known reputation of having lore dominated games to have a new franchise that doesn’t have much lore is a first in Blizzard.
Because at this point, even Hearthstone have more lore and that’s a literal card game
Its a hero shooter, why buy it if you dont care about the heroes? Also, it WASN’T a competitive game when i bought it and there was talk of there being published comics and novels.
You could close down Moe’s or the Kwik-e-mart
And nobody would care
But the heart and soul of Springfield’s is
Our maison-derriere
We’re the sauce on your steak,We’re the cheese in your cake
We put the spring in springfield
We’re the lace on the night gown, the point after touchdown
Yes we put the spring in springfield
We’re that little extra spice that makes existence extra nice
A giddy little thrill at a reasonable price
Our only major quarrel’s with your total lack of morals
Our skimpy costumes ain’t so bad, they seem to entertain your dad
The gin in your martini, the clams on your linguini
We keep theboing in springfield
We remember our first visit, the service was exquisite
Why Joseph, I had no idea
Come on now, you were working here
Without we’d have had no fun since March of 1961
To shut them down now would be twisted
We just heard this place existed
We’re the highlights in your hairdo, the extra arms on Vishnu
So don’t take the boing, we won’t take the slide whistle
Yes let’s keep the crash in Springfield!
I care about their gameplay (Kits, stats, weapons), you know, that thing that actually impacts the game.
As far as I care every hero could be voiced by a generic TTS machine and only speak or make sounds when it’s relevant to the game (Ult sounds, gunshots, etc.)
The game would still be the same to me.
You’re telling me you purchased Overwatch before even beta, where the entire premise was established as objective based 6v6 FPS gameplay?
Yeah man, these characters are really just functions when you get down to it.
To me, that sounds very boring. I only enjoy the game because of the lore. Shooting stuff can be fun I guess but lore is what keeps it interesting to me.
Most games nowadays have guns and abilities and whatnot. What makes a game interesting is why the fight is occurring, and who the soldiers are.
No game can offer a gameplay experience like Genji though.
The closest thing I’ve found is Maeve in Paladins and even that just feels like a watered down Genji in terms of gameplay.
I understand people not finding the hitscan characters interesting but Genji namely is the pinnacle of unique and fun gameplay in Overwatch, or any shooting game in my opinion.
But he’s Grey Fox from Metal Gear Solid… has no one played the PS1 training version where you get to play Grey Fox?
Well for one, this is blizzard, story and lore is a big deal.
Another thing, it’s one of the reasons a lot of people bought the game.
Those animated shorts brought in millions. Wasn’t just multiplayer. In fact I would bet most people wouldn’t even be playing if it wasn’t for the characters themselves. There are certainly better shooters out there😂
Story and characters are everything, otherwise it’s just shallow. The gameplay for overwatch is alright, if not repetitive and broken at its core, but the characters make up for it.
Why did they churn out multiple comics and animated shorts before the game was even released? If you tease people with something, you can expect them to want more.
Because context is important. Otherwise you might as well have cardboard silhouettes fighting each other.
Magneto would like to know your location
Yes I’m still mad at MvCi
Funny thing is I didn’t even mind. I love Marvel but I’m not a huge X-Men fan.
But that was one of the dumbest things a dev could have said next to “Don’t you guys have phones?”
TBH MvCI was a very very well designed game mechanics wise, probably one of the most fun fighting games I’ve played. But it was not pretty and it did not have the characters people wanted. So nobody bought it.
It will forever serve as a shining example of why people are full of crap when they say only gameplay matters. Overwatch’s lore and characters helped make it what it is, it could have even better gameplay than it does now but nobody would be playing it if it looked boring and only had generic faceless mook characters with a set of skills assigned to them.
That’s understandable. But it was a bit of kick in the teeth when those characters that have such a legacy in the series weren’t returning. It’s like removing Mario from Mario Kart.
Agreed, right up there with “People don’t want single player games anymore.” or “Sixteen times the detail.”
Wasn’t big on the 2v2 side. Coming from MvC 3 and FighterZ I just felt limited in my character choices. Also a couple of the gems had been busted for a good while. had a friend really pissed off with the collectors edition
But yeah the Chun-li face reveal and methed up looking Dante didn’t help for first impressions.
Yep. Also shows if the competition looks better then people will flock to that instead.

let me tell you something
have you ever heard of warframe it’s like what would happen if you mix overwatch and diablo it’s all about looting, shooting and grinding
and do you wanna what a big chunk of the community is really interested in? something called fashion-frame which basically means who can create the nicest looking frames
just because you’re not interested in a certain part of a game doesn’t mean no one should be interested in it!
Okay… let me tell you something about that. I’m someone who was legit interested in the lore of OW. SO here’s what’s going on:
A few years prior to OW launching, most crowds didn’t know what the game was going to be like. All we had was the animated short in the museum. While I admit the characters were pretty generic (the widowmaker is literally one of the most abused evil female personas along with the reaper archetype, which is literally how he’s called.), it still looked very interesting! Heroes and bad guys, I don’t need to complex stuff, it looked interesting.
A world where heroes were needed and where you literally witnessed a little nobody kid take matters into his hand to help his role models in which he seemed to have lost hope in and become a hero himself.
It was very promising and interesting. We then got other amazong cinematics like the 2 dragons or S76. Literally every cinematic gave me the goosebumps and got me hooked to the characters even before the game officially released. I hate Hanzo and Genji in game, but watching their cinematic to this day redeems their existence every time for me.
Then the game came out… and yeah, we saw that the gameplay didn’t have much story elements in them. I mean yes, we would see some cool elements like the DF gauntlet in Numbani and it’s disappearing etc. But it was pretty plain and straightforward online gamemodes.
Then came Uprising, the first archives mission. It gave us the setting of the story, and a little element of the omnic crisis. We got something and it was fun.
But that’s pretty much it. We got also blackwatch but yeah, pretty plain in the end. It basically told us what we knew: reaper was done playing by the rules.
Now we still have had no advancement in the story since release except for DF’s escape from prison. For me, someone who had some interest in the story, that part died long time ago. It’s a shame, I think if they did 2-3 lore events (archives for the past of OW, Blackwatch and Talon, a ‘omnic crisis’ event where you relive memorable wars and conflicts of the omnic crisis war and a ‘present’ event where you could be either OW or Talon trying to extract some info, have an infiltration followed by a chase and whatnot or generally something that would make the story of present move on: how about a mission where you infiltrate vishkar to get a part for tracer’s chrono accelerator which was seemingly broken and risked sending Tracer back to that weird spacetime after getting rekt by DF in the animated?!) Instead of only cosmetics and 1 interesting event every year, OW would probably see a rebirth among casuals and maybe even get some veterans to come back.
But looking at what’s happening on activision and co. I kinda gave up hope on story and just hope the game will get its social feature soon…
Anyway, sorry for rambling…
more like functions, variables, events, shaders, textures, hit boxes, audio files and some other stuff i’m probably missing
To put it in the simplest terms, we find the characters/world compelling and want to know more about them.
Counter-question: why do you care that we care? Your question comes off pretty negative, so our interest in the lore must bother you somehow.
