Why did McCree have Echo's data in the first place?

If she’s such an important part of Overwatch then why would McCree (Blackwatch Member) have it instead of say, Soldier, or Winston?

Maybe he personally wanted to save and bring her back when the time is right, and no one else simply cared or did anything.

I’ll go with some convoluted story involving Overwatch’s fall, government confiscation and McCree stealin’ stuff.

Given that we know McCree and Sombra have been in contact, I’d be shocked if she wasn’t involved somehow.

When Blackwatch rebelled, McCree stood against them, and stood alongside Overwatch. It stands to reason that this arguably makes him one of the most trustworthy members of Overwatch. He was likely given it for safekeeping if Overwatch was ever recalled, since he hasn’t really been on the grid in Overwatch’s absense. In the comic, the train passengers swore to secrecy on seeing him, and the standoff with Ashe may have been the first time in years he’s faced much conflict.

Its important but you know Blizzard, if its important it doesn’t have an explanation

Probably stolen it when UN decomissioned Overwatch. I mean rest of people were rather good natured folks. Reyes was “dead”, Moira probably didn’t cared, Genji went to look for redemption. Really not many “moraly ambigous” people left to stole it.

I’m only making this up/speculating but possibly she was deactivated for whatever reason; a battle, kidnapped… and Overwatch had the activation chip whilst her body was taken away. I have a feeling she is a key to something big (i.e. taking out the attacking Omnics) so there are plenty of potential motives that people would want Echo.

We don’t know that for sure. For all we know Sombra could just be spying on McCree for Talon or something

It makes sense actually. Echo is Winston’s creation. He wanted to protect her core memory. It’s possible when OW was being shutdown. He was ordered to destroy certain things. Better to give someone who left OW on “bad terms”. Screwing with the media and officials. But still friends with Winston. Maybe not personally. But through Echo.

which is why I think he said they need you more. Sombra recruited McCree and Ana is next (on her computer as targets) Zarya was already one she is trying to get and I think she also has eyes on Brigitte and Symmetra

I think she is starting her own group away from talon and overwatch.

Not to be negative or anything, because i still love Overwatch, it’s story and all that, but that’s kinda what is annyoing me more and more - this is again a short that actually poses more, way more questions than it answers, yet Blizzard still refuse to keep up a constant stream of lore and story. Two cinematics and - if we are lucky - one new Archive event every year just isn’t enough.

What makes you think she recruited Jesse in the first place ? Or is trying to recruit any of the others ?

That’s also, imo, completely out of her usual m.o… Not really subtle starting your own group.

Pretty much everyone has speculated my conclusions. I can see Jesse, being basically a street urchin and growing up in a sea of duplicity by being on the streets, probably became attached (not shipped! I reiterate became attached) to Echo, presumably the physical avatar of Athena (names given in order to reduce confusion). Jesse being a “straight shooter” known for his candor and Echo, probably the most earnest being an AI, formed a bond. If everyone one around you (Deadlock, Blackwatch, and Overwatch) seemed to be manipulate the truth, wouldn’t you attach to someone that is honest?

(Pure speculation incoming)

During the disbanding of OW, whether by order of the “monkey” or Jesse’s own volition, Echo’s data chip went missing. Since she is far too state-of-the-art to just toss and maybe the powers that be wanted to repurpose her, they decided to send “her” and probably some mundane things, as a cover, to another site. Jesse, keeping tabs on Echo’s location from the shadows, gets a tip. He utilized this tip to set up the Deadlock Gang to do his dirty work. This allows him to kill two birds with one stone: catch the DLG and free Echo.

Easy as apple pie

I think this because Sombra knows things others don’t. On her computer in Castillo, Jesse and Ana are both on her computer, and she has been stalking Jesse since the Reflections comic. Chu said there are things only Sombra knows, she knows everything and her word can’t be trusted. She appears “bad” but Reaper and Doomfist are onto her. You have the good, the bad, but no gray, the middle man. I believe she is the gray that will bring both Overwatch and Talon together.

I really don’t think she is there just because she is there to “start trouble” She has a reason. Her reason is the Iris. She wants to stop it. She knows of it’s plans. She has her own. I don’t think it’s out of her style to start her own group. She tried already with Volskaya? Volskaya then turned her back on her so now Sombra is going for her best solider, Zarya.

Would not be surprised if he stole the technology. Either to keep it in safe hands or because he wanted it for himself. He does come from a criminal backround. He could have acquired it that way too.

This last few days i have had this on my mind, everyone was so focused on ashe and if they talked about echo was only because she is a confirmed future hero (barring no problems arise). But what was more impactful on the cinematic to me was Mcree’s attitude, the way he suddenly got so soft when he activated her, specifically calling her “partner”, why he has the data, was it entrusted to him? he went out of his way to recover it? why he was willing to go that far or the one entrusted with it. Implying there is a very strong connection between them that people would seek mccree if you wanted to find her. Also the way he sort of declined to go back to ow, out of shame or something, like he did something really bad and doesnt deserve to. I was surprised that no one was discussing this.

Blackwatch might have kept or stolen Echo and McCree stolen from them.

I guess we’re going to find out about this important episode of overwatch on the next archives event or on the release of echo and since Echo is not heroe 30, why not both, having an archives event with echo’s story.

Maybe she was his partner for real.

I would love this. These inbetween characters are the best. Sombra, Zarya, Mcree, Hanzo, are my favorites
