Why control maps aren't fun

Dying to something from across an incredibly open map and from an angle you couldn’t be bothered to focus on because something else had your attention.

Unlike 2CP, Hybrid, and Payload where everything is very front and center with like limited visibility and flanking routes you can easily keep tabs on.

i personally dont like control maps because its a cluster of death and despair in the middle, a blender where people all throw themselves at nonstop and that basically consists of your traditional control gameplay basically the rest of the map doesnt get used.

I’d argue control maps are fun because it’s difficult to snowball and both teams have an equal advantage so a loss never feels cheap like 2 cp. Also 2cp is where most of these super open sight lines are. The only koth map I can think of that has open sight lines is nepal.

All maps of Busan.
Nepal Shrine and Sanctum
Lijang Tower
Illios all of it.
Oasis Garden, City Center

The major benefit of assault maps is that flanking routes feel more limited as they are more entrenched. You know the enemy team is coming from like one of 3 major chokes on 2nd point or 1 major choke. Similar to Paris.

Due to defender spawn you are far less likely to see someone behind your team the closer to spawn/control you get. Unlike on control maps where literally anyone can go half way up the map just to get behind you because they don’t need as much time. If someone tries to flank and dies for it, you have spawn advantage. They are discouraged from going so deep without their team.

I agree whole heartedly that Control or King of the Hill maps are terrible and not fun in the slightest. I disagree with open feel of the maps aside from Busan. All the Control/KOTH maps feel extremely claustrophobic and flanking is less viable. The mode itself just feels like a camping simulator.

I’d actually argue that Control isn’t even a suitable name for the mode. King of the hill makes more sense. Control in any other FPS has been about managing to hold 2 out of 3 capture points or the all 3 lockout. That would be a much more entertaining game mode with 3 capture pointes to have to rotate around rather than Ult racing to hold a single spot.

Seriously I’d rather draw on every 2cp map than play another KoTH map again. I seriously hate that mode.

both 2cp and control are horrible, but i would prefer control but its not fun because it throws a lot of the strategy part out the window

Busan is full of walls and corners, you can’t die to something across the map.

Nepal shrine is open, sanctum is not. It has its own rooms and 2 different routes

Lijang tower is only open if you play a hero that can fly. The rock blocks people from shooting spawn from point.

Ilios is full of buildings, it’s hardly open. There are only really two flanking routes because all fights happen at the point.

Oasis is has that round thing in the middle which obscures views and funnels everyone into the same area. Only 2 flank options for both maps and they’re easily watched because you need to pass the chokepoint to get to any flank position.

In assault maps, you have this huge open channel for defenders to fire down. For example Anubis you can shoot almost to spawn, volskaya you have the high ground to shoot at re spawning attackers, horizon you can move to the high ground and start shooting as soon as attackers leave choke. 2 cp does not need to flank from the point. After a won fight, the defender can camp in some area of the map and just pick off players from there because of how long the map is.

But you’re far more likely to have a poor experience because you rolled the enemy team the entire game, but they just take back the point in overtime because of snowballing/spawn advantage.
