Why can't you call a timeout in this game?

If you DC for whatever reason it’s pretty much a loss. Power cuts out, internet cuts out, PC crashes whatever. This doesn’t feel good to happen to you, doesn’t feel good if you lose because of it or if you win because of it.

Just do what CSGO did and let each team call 1 timeout per half. This way, if they do DC you can atleast give players a buffer to rejoin.

There are always situations out your control where you are thrown out a match for whatever reason, atleast let us lower the damage of these situations.

Yeah, I don’t see why we can’t. Heck, SMITE just recently added the option for a 2 minute pause in casual queues if someone disconnects — a feature that was limited to ranked queues for years.

Would it be exploitable in any way? Maybe I’m missing an obvious reason…

Worst thing you could do is use it to waste time. Even so you can just limit it to auto pause the second someone DC’s or you can only pause when someone DC’s.

Yeah, I figured as much. To add some more detail to my previous point, when a disconnect occurs in SMITE, the enemy team isn’t forced to pause, rather it’s an option. It only takes one player to trigger it, however, so on the basis of that sort of system I was skeptical as to if it would be used negatively to intentionally mess with teammates’ timings.

But yeah, if a short time waster is the worst-case scenario, I think it’d be a good addition if possible!

This is how it works in cs too. However it takes the majority vote for it to pass in CS.

OW has too many throwers/smurf and cry babies. Coming from someone who has 1700 hours in Smite, there’s no way OW players could handle a feature like this. Also, I’ve had conquest games last over an hour before lol a pause is somewhat nice.

Forget the timeout.
Just add 1min to the swapping sides timer if there is a player missing
Wouldn’t be a huge deal

It already exists in OWL, I believe, so they already have the system in place. Don’t see why they don’t add it at least to comp.

Yo lemme just pause the game every match after a thrower leaves. Because thats what I want, to extend our stomp.

Timeouts are better for games like MOBAs that can last an hour.

Matches in OW are too short, timeout and pauses are not needed.

Someone DCs and doesnt make it back in a timely manner, just absorb that loss and move on.

Okay so if I thrower leaves just don’t call the timeout? Really isn’t that hard of a concept.

absolutely. take the ‘widow dance’ for example, where opposing widows will carefully time their peeks and shot attempts down to fractions of a second to outwit the opponent. if you’re going on a super aggressive angle and peek. instantly pause the game. your movement on clientside will show you everything and give you time to study the paused image while the enemy’s aim is locked elsewhere, she may even lose focus mentally over the 2 minute timeout while youre using it to your advantage

or defensively lets say you need to cross enemy sightlines, pause right before you enter the sightlines. even if the enemy is ready, they likely wont be ready 2 minutes later for the unpause to go from noaction+novisual indicator of action to you suddenly crossing a golden opportunity sightline while they need to refocus their aim

I used to play Dota2 (5v5 Moba for those that don’t know) and a player disconnect insta-paused the game for 40ish seconds to allow them to reconnect.

Obviously this can be abused by potentially 12 players so I’d agree with:

timeout call:

  • once per round (per team)
  • 40 seconds
  • one player (or more) must have DC’d (can’t use it if all players present).

Overwatch is not like CS:GO or other round-based tactical shooters. In those games, the rounds score independently from each other so a timeout is practical. Overwatch matches are relatively short in nature and rounds impact one another, so in the open-ladder nature of the game it is more important to deliver an uninterrupted experience for most players.

In Custom Games (including the ones you can make and all the way to Overwatch League), there is a feature for the lobby’s owner to pause (Ctrl+Shift+=), or pause automatically if a player drops out by disconnection. Competitions like Contenders and Overwatch League have pausing rules to allow a fair opportunity for players to reconnect in a timely matter, because there is safe presumption that they did not mean to disconnect intentionally. Furthermore, these tournaments have rules where teammates on either are forbidden to talk to each other until the player who dropped is back and the match has resumed. Such rules are impossible to enforce in the open matchmaking modes, and we have seen many instances where these rules have been suspect to abuse by professional teams.
