I am not sure about any of that, but he is usually the character I pick in Street Fighter. I like 'em long and FANTASTIC!
If they did add one after claiming Genji couldn’t always use the sword because it was ‘unbalanced’ then I think I’d be more than mad at that point.
Yeah, she’s a lil bit different but she follows the same design category of say Genji where the rest of their kit does the heavy lifting and the melee aspect of it, while not weak, is not an overly interesting part of her kit compared to her bleeds, her hook, etc.
They had it with Doom and while I personally had no issues with him, people hated being OHK/ CC by him so much they reworked him into a tank. For a melee DPS to work, they would NEED the durability and/ or movement to even get in range, and they would (or should at least) basically be guaranteed to win if they even get that close. Why do I say this? Compare them to any other character that’s equipped for if not meant for close range:
Cassidy I think can 1 burst most non-tanks, and his grenade alone takes out what? About 1/3 of their health AND hinders them? He missed? Roll for an instant reload and another chance at a burst kill.
Mei has the slow on her primary and a self heal for 2/3 of her health.
Reaper has a self heal every time he hits someone and can 3 shot 250 HP at I think 8 meters give or take.
Genji is just slippery as hell and has 2 tools to survive if it’s a losing fight.
Tracer technically has 2 lives and is fast/ small as hell.
You could sort of count Hanzo here because of Storm Arrow, but I wouldn’t.
Who else am I missing if anyone? A melee DPS would need either more DPS than any of them, high enough durability to basically count as an off-tank, or better mobility than any of them to function. Hell, the only reason Brigitte functions as a melee only support is because she heals a set about in a radius when she does hot with her melee that can be used at range. What would a melee only DPS need to not be fodder?
With a good Zar it was possibly too much fun!
I feel rivals has a pretty damn good approach to melee heroes overall, and paints a good picture of how we can properly accomplish melee based characters in a “hero” game.
Any “fair” melee dps will be utterly dominated by opposing tanks and dps. The only way for a melee dps to not have the exact same problems as reaper would be to make them like genji or tracer, and those already exist.
Because it’s stupid. It’s a hero shooter, and melee is limited to tanks to punish getting too close. Melee DPS can’t really outdamage tanks, and have way too many limitations, so it’s pointless.
Yeah, I didn’t play the recent versions of SF series but afair, Dhalsim was more like an exotic character rather than core.
Aside from the precise control, it was more like about the priority(certain special attack just wins against other attacks) and to exploit the enemy defense such that there are high/mid/low attacks and grab.
Space and time is important but not like occupying them. It was more like about exact measuring of the distance and timing. The closest thing in OW is that Genji measures the distance of SS and performs the combo, but in street fighter, the exact distance and timing were to exploit the defense system.
A true melee DPS would look a little wired in first person, melee as a whole tends to work better in third person.
Even heroes with melee weapons like Rein and Brig feel off if all you did was solely press M1 with them. Magik and Wolverine work well because the third person view allows you to convey what they are doing better. It would be hard to show Magik teleporting/spinning and Wolverine’s jumping in first person.
Rework Genji to flip him around then
He fights with the sword normally and his ult is to throw barrages of superpower shuriken
If anything, they have done a much worse job with Rivals’ balance than prime GOATS. And Rivals has only been out for a couple of months.
Just add mister fantastic and that’s their melee dps done
Mister Fantastic has tanking elements with abilities like Reflexive Rubber.
Also he is not melee range IIRC, he has a very short range from which he can do damage like Venture.
GOATS was not unbalanced mate, the fact that you could stack 3 heroes of each role lead to that. And Brig existing ofc.
And thats why you can’t compare a game’s release “balance levels” with one that was active … 3 years? when GOATS existed but ok.
PS: No. MR is not even close to balance. Its pretty far actually from being close to balanced lol.
A melee DPS is either a flanker or an off tank. If he’s a flanker then he needs some absurd moblity (Black Panther) or a lot of overhealth (Mr Fantastic), or insane burst once it gets close (Magick, idk if OW dvs or the community who complains about everything will want that.
Serious answer is because they promote binary interactions. A melee tank has a lot more utility and space around, while a melee dps either can kill someone in a way it is veyr ahrd
or nigh impossible to respond to, or becomes virtually useless compared to its ranged counterparts. DPS doom had that binary despite having a shotgun. He either rollouted from Kenya to the US and oneshotted someone before leaving basically having no response time, or was completely useless and way too telegraphed. Rivals melee dps are similar.
They either oppressively beat you down or they hit a cc/ get denied a reset and completely fall over. Iron fist is a low rank menace while in high rank he gets absolutely mauled by any coordinated backline.
I don’t know that ‘bad’ is the right word… it’s just that the Rivals devs said they balance for fun, vs OW devs who claim to balance for fairness.
Basically any character that is strong 1v1 with no counters will make the community complain. I’m not saying there are no counters to Magik, but you need teamplay to fend off Magik once he gets up close whereas your average player wants to counter by themselves.
It does make me wonder if it would be too crazy to make a hero that is third person at least a good amount of the time. You kinda get that on brig and rein so If some abilities put you in third person it wouldn’t be the first time they’d do so.
Still a question of, is that even something overwatch or dps players would want.
Hard to deny dps players like heroes such as Ashe and soldier in the fps shooter game
