I absolutely hate it when I see a duo of a Diamond and a Gold in my Plat games. I know that the matchmaker tries to balance things out to make things more fair, and usually it is, but its the attitude we get from Diamonds I truly hate. If we’re losing, they blame everything on us. If we’re winning, they act as if they carried all 5 of us on their back. I’ve played my fair share of games with these duos, and 70% of the time they are more toxic than an entire team of throwers.
It doesn’t make sense to be able to group in such a big SR Difference anyways. I can understand 1 skill Tier. 1000 SR? That is 2 skill tiers. What reasoning is allowing them to skip a skill tier and play together? I thought Blizzard hated Boosting, and I dont see how two players of that big an SR difference would be doing anything other than Boosting. I would rather have the 250 SR gap GMs have be a blanket rule to remove that one jerk who thinks he’s better than 5 other people combined.
I would really like to see 2 changes.

Make the maximum grouping SR difference 250. Its like this in GM to keep games fair and even. Why is it not like this on all levels?

If a player falls under their placement SR, prevent them from grouping. If the Placement puts you slightly under where the system thinks you should be, there shouldn’t be a legitimate reason you are going under this unless the placement is wrong or you are deranking intentionally.
Boosters will have a much harder time getting lower to boost other players. Being within 250 SR is already trouble in lower ranks. The SR system gives some to you based on performance, and if you are over preforming , i.e. destroying the enemy 6 players single handedly, you get significantly more SR than the Mercy that is probably pocketing you. If you then take into account that it will be impossible to group if you fall under your Placement rating, Boosting is impossible unless a new account is bought and intentionally placed in a low rating.

Perhaps I’m missing something. What are the reasons to let people 1000 sr apart to play together in competitive mode?
I genuinely do not see what can justify such a difference in skill level being allow to be in the same match. If you claim shorter queue times, I’d gladly wait the extra time for a fair game. If you claim you want to play with friends, you can do that in literally every other game mode. QP can be competitive too ya’know.

It really should be the queue within 500sr for ALL ranks.

I know what you mean. I know I could hit Master if I duo with my friend and he’s on a gold smurf. Unfortunately he doesn’t have a gold smurf.
It was 500 SR for all ranks. The forums here and reddit cried nonstop because they want to que with friends and they boosted it to 1000. and made it 500 for masters and above. Recently they made it 250~ for GM.
It was a community outrage.

Here is the last known official answer to why the group spread is set for 1000 SR for Bronze through Diamond players. Note this was back when Season 2 changes was in testing on the PTR and the maximum spread was 500 SR. Back then a majority of the community complained about it being too restrictive for a group.
We’ll see how everyone feels about the numbers we picked once everyone has placed on the PTR (it will be up soon – this week). If we were too restrictive, we can loosen up a little. There are costs and benefits to both directions so this is a tricky number to get right. Too loose and we get the boosting/matchmaking issues we have now. Too tight and people cannot play with their friends…
We’ll keep a close eye on our tuning here.

The truth is that the difference between of 1000 SR between players that are diamond and below is minimal to begin with.
Try saying that about the Diamond player when they wipe your team.
Just saying
The inverse can also be true. Imagine a silver player wiping your team as well when you are a plat. It happens. People make good plays. You are just more likely to dismiss it as “they got lucky” when they are a lower rank. Where as if they are a higher rank you are more likely to say “Why are they even in the same game as me?”.
Just saying.

It should be max 300 SR difference for grouping across all ranks, with the game also allowing you to group if you’re in the same rank as each other (so Bronze players aren’t screwed with their rank being so wide-ranged). If you want to play with your friends who are a different SR, you have literally every other team based game mode in the game to play, you shouldn’t be ruining the balance of other people’s games.
Neither a high diamond or a high gold player belong in a high plat game, and yet that sort of duo is in those games all the damn time.

Why can matchmaking still put a 6 stack against randoms
because we gotta let everybody play.
Not saying it’s a good thing, but it is how Blizzard designed the matchmaking system.
because apparently quickplay isn’t good enough for most people playing with friends.
not like pugs or LFG exist.
So u think that someone that tasted ranked would play normals? i have to say i never play normals since i´m level 25 and i will never cause normals are not good enough for me normals for me are troll games everybody picks what he wants so why should i play this dog… with my friends when i can play ranked with my friends instead where we all can climb and have fun together?
I get what you’re saying, but I really want to be able to play comp with my lower-ranked friends. It’s the only “real” mode in the game and it’s the most fun by far. I think narrowing the skill brackets further would only encourage more artificial SR decreasing (throwing) by people who rank up just a little too much.
you don’t know why? it would cause 10x more smurfing
not really
to keep it fun for casuals with friends and to keep smurfing very low
Aaahh Necro threads. The best thing about this one is WyomingMist. You go guy!
yes, i played normals quite often – but this day and age they’re unbearable, they were good when i used to duo cause i had someone with a good hero pool and skill level to help me out and rely on. Now you have LFG so you can skip all the “troll games” by finding people that want to play like you.
people act like other players don’t troll in ranked, i have 4 accounts, this one is inactive, it used to be FakeJoshPeck on overbuff if you’re curious…every account i play on, every elo, you always have 5 dps comps occasionally, you always have players that won’t work together, you always have people being as5holes in comms…it’s literally no different, and if you’re tryharding in QP you’ll win most of the time if you’re consistent cause most of the times people aren’t trying in QP, the more you win the higher MMR, the harder opponents, etc. it is a good tool if you use it correctly.
