Maybe they’re thinking of the old English meaning of gay?

Because one means happy and the other means women are happy.

And also that men are happy when the women are happy.

Actually they both mean happy…>_>

Pretty interesting considering Tracer is a lesbian.

Because one word means happy and joyful, and the other means female homosexuality.

All of the people saying ‘it means happy’. Yeah, thats true. But its old English. and thats not what it means anymore. Gay means homosexual now. Sorry but, its not really an excuse… Just look up words that have changed meaning, it happens… a lot.

It’s probably just an oversight. They’re used to people using gay as an insult and overzealously banned the word from group titles. Is it banned from regular messages as well?

And please don’t use the “well they both mean happy” argument. Nobody in the 21st century uses gay for its antiquated meaning unless they’re specifically trying to do some kind of fun-fact “did you know gay meant happy back then???” kind of thing. It’s even worse when people say “oh, it just means a bundle of sticks” just so they can shock people by using that one certain homophobic slur.

It doesn’t matter what a word used to mean. In any conversation, the only meaning of a word that matters is the one that your audience understands.

To be fair the actual, original definition of the word “gay” is lighthearted and carefree. It didn’t receive the definition it has now until the 1960s. So if you’re using actual English when you put “gay” in the title of your group, you’re asking for a lighthearted and carefree group.

Words change meaning all the time. Gay doesnt mean happy or lighthearted anymore. You put gay in your title, youre searching for homosexual. Youre not asking for a lighthearted carefree group, and thats common sense

Why do you want to put it there in the first place.

sigh…

It really doesn’t matter. What matters is the inconsistency with the 2 words.

Actually, it does mean lighthearted and carefree still. The word “gay” is the perfect example of a word with dual meanings. It’s current most common definition is referring to a homosexual, and the second, less common, and original definition is to be lighthearted and carefree. So it means both, and as a result is the most likely reason why you can use the term “gay” and not the term “lesbian” when looking for a group. It’s basic English, and just another example of the English language being both lazy and unnecessarily complicated.
