Why Auto Aim Characters

I’m legit asking. This is a fps, where the majority of the players MUST aim to land shots. It’s part of the fps culture and genre. It’s what makes fps fun. The better your aim, the better you can perform. Why then put characters that completely negate that? Moira’s orb is ai controlled, plus her damage is auto aim, oddly her heal (which is her primary function) is a short range spray. Winston is all auto aim. Then we have Torb who simply just drops a turret and has the ai do all the work. And then Sym who again, just spams ai controlled turrets.

I understand Ults having autoaim. They require the player to perform and build them up, mostly by hitting their target, thus incorporating the aiming mechanic. But the four characters I named primarily rely on the game doing the work for them.

I’ve never asked this before, and I’m sure I’ll get the “sounds like you need to get good” toxic garbage this community is known for, but I’m legit wondering why include these characters in a genre that I built around the exact opposite?

Its a great thing this game appeals to more than just call of duty twitchy aim shooters. It really broadens the demographic. Maybe one day they will add a character that can see the battlefield as a top down rts-like and control squads of drones or soldiers to appeal to people like me who play games like age of empires, world in conflict, and Starcraft2. And yes, those drones will probably have autoaim.

To get a wider array of players to buy the game.

If I was just into playing a game for aim/movement I’d probably be on Quake/Unreal.

Because It isnt built in opposite
It was built to try to make it mix of Fps and other stuff.
If it was aiming all heroes should at least have some long range main weapons.

You mean the one that you aim as it travels in a straight line towards where you point?
Like I get it isn’t hard to aim at all but damn its not AI.

Yeah if a throw a ball and it bounces off a wall, that is simple physics, no AI.

Wat?!?

Um, probably because Blizzard’s goal for Overwatch was never to make it “just another FPS” if u get what I mean. I feel like if u went into OW expecting it all to revolve around aiming you were greatly misled, lol.

You don’t play new Torb, do you?

I try to control my orb with my mind. So far I didn’t think it was working, but maybe some of the folks I see posting were in a game against me and the ball changed course to chase them. Maybe there’s something to this.

Ty for the tip. Next time before strting playong overwatch Im gonna join practise range to traing my Miora dmg orb flickshots!

I MEAN I SEE THESE PRO MIORA MAINS IN ARCADE FFA MAKING QUAD KILLZ EZZI THERE INVESTED A LOT OF TIME PRACTICE RANGE!

Sory for caps.

No it isn’t. It travels in a straight line and bounces off walls. There is no AI involved in that.

In a game like overwatch, that kind of ability would be completely overpowered. Having a bird-eye view of the amp just shouldn’t be a thing and you know it.

So, you have mentioned a couple of characters, but let’s go back to the beginning of your post

You have listed a minority of characters. Which means a majority must still aim

So where is the complaint?

I know this is a typo, but I can’t resist.

You invented and built the FPS genre a certain way?

What if it put you down a player though? Like, it’s 5v6’ish, the 6th guy on team 1 has the bird’s eye view for callouts (obv still couldnt’ see sombra in stealth).

I’m not making a real suggestion here, just thought exercising as to how on earth it could be balanced somehow.

Because aiming isn’t EVERYTHING. Yes, the better the aim, the more likely you are to win independent battles, but you don’t always need to aim like a sniper in FPS.

Halo has several weapons where you only need to be within range and facing your intended target. The Gravity Hammer and Energy Sword are such weapons.

I mean, FPS may as well be real life; you don’t aim 24/7 in real life, do you? First person just means you see from your models base perspective allowing you to interact more independent of the games mechanics (ex: Gears of War is a TPS, you see from over the shoulder of your model and so aiming can be a bit more finicky depending on which weapon you use, but you can still aim.)

So having heroes that don’t require you to be basic CoD sniper precise is not really an issue. You people have too much of a fetish with being ‘skilled’ in FPS.

Having a bird’s eye view as an ability in Overwatch is just like having sniping or resurrection in this game. It cannot be balanced, it’s black or white. Overpowered or underpowered. Let’s not introduce more of those abilities into the game.

I dunno, it wouldn’t actually be wallhacks. Sure he could call out “heroname to the left, in the building” but you wouldn’t actually see them through the walls. It would be like having a weak widow ult all game but no widow to shoot them and no knowledge of when they were about to peek, etc.

Maybe it would be underpowered come to think of it.

Simple geometry…

His neutral game is pretty straightforward… but using his Ult effectively… that’s how to know it’s a pro winston.

These turrets are only a portion of the character’s kit. You aren’t using them to their full potential if you don’t actually aim your gun. I personally see these characters as like training wheels to learn other soft skills in the game (things other than mechanical Aim). They also open other advance strategies with some team coordination (Have you seen the Mei+Sym attack strat on Eichenwald?)

Maybe because Blizzard wanted to be inclusive to people who aren’t your average FPS CoD player. I’m almost certain that OW has a better female:male ratio compared to other classic FPS games (based on my own observations at least. Feel free to object.) They’re doing a good job at targeting a market segment that won’t normally play FPS shooter games.
