Why are turrets in the game?

Can I ask. Why are AI turrets in the game?

Let me clarify…why did someone think it was a good idea to have turrets in the game?

To counter heroes like tracer, cause they’re too lazy to actual nerf her. So hey, let’s have an auto aim turret to deal with it…

But then I think about how sym and torb have been here since the beginning… So now… Who knows.

I respect people who have the skill and aim to kill me. I have zero respect for a turret hero.

Eh. Except when the hero you have to try and aim is small, can rewind time to gain HP back, and also has 3 charges of a 5 meter teleport ability on a 3 second cooldown.

So… it is what it is.

What kind of turret use do you hate the most?

Torb turret?
TP Bomb Turret?
Doorway way-microwave turret?

Or Bob?

Best description of Sym turret I’ve ever heard

Because they’re a literal staple of this particular FPS subgenre, dating all the way back to Quake Team Fortress.

They belong in Overwatch because of the type of game that Overwatch is. Simple as that.

Since this thread has been bumped and is getting attention again, I ask this: who is less skilled - the person playing the builder-hero, placing turrets in strategic places to prevent flankers from reaching their backline (while also preventing them from being easily destroyed) or the person playing Tracer, running into a turret over and over again?

I respect people who have the tiny amount of skill and aim you need to kill a turret. I have zero respect for people that can’t do that.

If you can’t kill turrets, then it sounds like you just don’t know how to counter turret hero’s like my queen Symmetra? xD

Neat.

LOL TURRETS GO BUDDA BUDDA!

Welcome to the world of strategy VS mechanics. If I can put a turret somewhere that you cannot deal with, I win. Just like I accept that if you pop around a corner and 1clip my face I lose.

Rarely have I had complaints about the “balance” of turret heroes-

In fact I tend to think they’re underpowered as a whole.

Turrets are, typically, easy to circumnavigate or remove- making a huge portion of a heroes kits useless

But that said, I still despise auto aiming turrets.

Typically speaking they serve as a low skill floor approach to higher skill floor heroes- which I have qualms with off the bat. But that these heroes tend to do better the “worse” your enemy is to a degree- is another factor. They serve as “win more” mechanics.

On the flip side I feel bad for players who like these heroes, because the auto aiming nature of their kit and tendency to do good at low/mid ranks, absolutely holds them back from receiving meaningful buffs that the heroes tend to need to be successful in higher tiers.

If I had my way all auto aiming turrets would be heavily diminished in their auto aiming capabilities - with more emphasis on the agency of the player themselves.

Tell us what is your experience with ‘AI Turrets’? Most games have them, when you bash this element of fps it seems Overwatch is like your first game of this genre. Half-lifes got them, Perfect Darks got them, Quake has them, its GOT to be what I suspect in my post.

Because everything and all types of gameplay are supposed to be welcomed in OW. The skill elitists have convinced people that certain things shouldn’t exist or make OW worse or make it not a pure shooter. Everything that goes against what OW originally was and OW is dying because of it.

You can’t have it both ways though. You can’t say turrets are a cheat and “Meh skill” should be her counter while also buffing Tracers speed, lowering her hit box size, increasing her gun dmg and range etc.

Not all hero’s are created equal in this game. You can’t say Tracer takes “skill” when she has so many advantages and then deny other hero’s any advantage against her be it turrets, CC or the like.

Heck half the game balance is usually around the idea “Can it one shot tracer”, if Yes they usually nerf it.

Well, since the game revolves around archetypes, turrets pertain to builder archetypes, that said I do dislike the auto aim feature, specially torb’s mainly because that damn turret doesn’t have falloff whatsoever

even though the turret kind of tickles (56 dps) it’s just so annoying to die from an auto aim that was placed minutes ago and it just happened to target you at the right time, not to mention that this thing has the health of a tanky dps (250 dps) and no crit box

I like the idea of a turret but I wish it was a lot more interactive with torb and less independant/random

Getting mad at turrets is so 2017. That said, the game would definitely be a little more fun without them, but they are way less intrusive and painful than they were back in the day.

I don’t find them annoying but this trend is just silly…they had the guts to put a turret hero in QUAKE CHAMPIONS lmao

You don’t get what I’m saying. Oh, I can kill the turrets, that’s not my issue. My issue is that they AUTO aim. There is ZERO skill in that. Whereas if I’m playing say Soldier…I have to actually AIM to kill someone. I have to be aware of my surroundings, who’s where, target priority, etc… all in a split second. But this stupid machine across the map can just auto lock and shoot and HIT 100% of the time. That’s where my issue is and it also is like the hero has TWO guns instead of one. The skill just isn’t the same.

Torb Turret dps: 56

Soldier 76 dps: 171 (bodyshots only)

Who cares if they autoaim, it’s doing less dps than Winston. Pretty sure on console they’re even weaker too.

Turrets are a mainstay of the game and they are good to have. They’re also fairly easy to destroy and typically have weak damage
