Why are there no women in the competitive?

It’s because of the same reason i’m not in GM. If you don’t have the skill, you wont be able to play at a certain level.

g8 b8 tho m8!

the cost fee of having a team in owl is like 30 million dollars.
any female that wants to to be on a team would have to move to where the team trains and work with them about 4-8 hours a day.

not ideal conditions, and the base salary isn’t so high for beginners.

Interesting… For a second there, I thought developers have been tailoring games to their broader demographics in both females and older users.

Many developers have implemented female characters as primary roles, and they have also changed how they are portrayed. Even looking at the big-name ‘AAA’ developers, majority have chosen to move away from the hypersexualization of women and ‘damsel-in-distress’ plots.

Games have gotten spendier because older folks have the money to pay for them.

Why would you think, even for a second, that developers would invoke their bias in such a way that could be detrimental to how their product is received to their audience?
When has Rainbow Six franchise ever had so many female playable roles? When has CoD? Battfield?
Why do you think Blizzard has made changes to desexualize their characters?
Why do you think Mortal Kombat devs have completely omitted characters from the roster or changed characters to desexualize and tailor to their female demographics?

This isn’t the 80’s, the 90’s, or early 00’s anymore.
If you are interested, there are actual master’s theses written on this topic alone. Actual studies.

I’m not even a woman and it puts me off wanting to compete in this “community” I wouldn’t consider it prestigious.

I like the game but community stresses me out.

Yeah, there’s definitely differences in how guys react to verbal abuse and differences in how they are expected to react.

I get incredibly tense saying anything on a mic as anything I say - due to my accent, my choice of words, the subject matter I focus on - can be used to trigger an unprovoked attack. Anything that can mark me as different. And then what am I going to do? I can’t mute them quickly enough and I know they’re spending the game talking me down to the rest of my team.

Sometimes I do hear cool dudes and dudettes in voice chat but I just never know if they’re going to suddenly turn and start spitting bile or humiliate me over some trivial thing they don’t like about me.

For me as a female, competetive turned into a hostile enviroment, where whenever I speak, I am constantly treated with harrasment, sexism and criticism for mestakes I do reasoning, that it´s “because I am a girl and I can´t play this or that…” Dudes…clearly make mistakes cause it´s natural, but women do mistakes cause they are women. Ok…
I belive, there is far more females who just don´t want to deal with this s*it and simply don´t go this way, even tho they can an have the skill to do so.
And it´s not only in game. It´s everywhere in a real life. I studyied archeology and there were just few females among the majority of men on the department. Even our tutors treated us with sexism, constantly puting us down with comments - some of them even remarked that it´s “men´s field of science”. Some of my female classmates gave up. That´s why some fields have so few females working there…that´s why there is lack of females in esports. Cause men think, that if they dominate some field, they own it. No offense… (I know that not all of you are like that) And for those who will have urge to say something negative to my statement - I understand, you don´t expirience it first hand as I do even in real life, so it´s probably hard to imagin.

You just reminded me that xkcd already summed up sexism in a single comic.

For every great girl gamer there is in competitve, there is 10 times more guys who is even better. I think people have a hard time accepting reality for what it is. Can girls be good at games? Of course they can! In fact I’m sure there are some that can prove their merit, but the number of women who can keep up with guys in a video game like Overwatch is less than 1% I would say. I’m actually going to give an example and you can look this up. A national soccer’s women team lost to a bunch of high school boys. A lot of things like VIDEO GAMES, sports. Things women usually don’t have and interest in are dominated by men this is facts, and these same people have been playing and honing their skills for many years.

Has there ever been a girl/woman player of OWL caliber? Can we find someone who was good enough but got rejected?
as someone who doesn’t particularly follow esports i honestly don’t know… but the fact that someone PRETENDED to be a girl to get in shows the league is willing and pressuring to get girls in and there still isn’t the talent there to pull.

Does anyone have an example of a player who had a chance and was overlooked?

Nothing I say is going to reasonably convince you that harassment affects men just as much as it does women and the passive aggressive tone of your posts is making me think I should spend my time doing something else.

It’s a waste of time to argue about how harassment affects each gender when neither of us know what it’s like to be the other.

I say: “Harassment affects men as much as women”
You say: “Women are affected by harassment more”

There’s no point in trying to argue this.

Win98 was champion of SA Contenders with Team Dignity, and got a ton of 2nd places. I don’t follow the T2 teams of other regions to know if there is more, but I heard EU have one or two really good players in Contenders teams as well.

Alemão, who played for Boston Uprising in 2019, came from the same region.

It was also a Contenders team proposal, not an OWL team. Contenders is a lot more open with their invites, especially from good OD teams.

im guessing both of these posts are talking about that “Ellie” who made it into contenders? that account appeared out of nowhere and was very secretive about any personal info. people had good reasons to be suspicious about her sudden appearance, there was a lot more to it than just “shes a woman so she cant be in top 500”. (and just like they suspected it was some dude with an alternative account).

i think if anything this shows how much women are actually wanted at higher levels of the game. the moment one shows up shes gets into contenders.
its just that there are barely any women who ever reach such a high level, most likely because very few women strive to make a career out of playing the game at the highest level.

were they comparable to the metrics of the OWL players ? I understand since this IS OW the hard numbers are subject to the capabilities of their teammembers but there’s contenders… and then theres OWL which (I hear) is like the difference between Masters and top 500. People can wreck in contenders and still get rolled in something as precise as OWL.

I have no idea. Contenders match are not available for download on the viewer, and the camera rarely show up support gameplay for me to focus too long on what she was doing.

Also, one of the biggest factors that go into OWL is not necessarily raw skill, but also how well you interact and coordinate with your teammates. That’s one of the reasons why teams don’t look too much into foreign players, because they assume communication will be an issue.

Playing well in ladder don’t necessarily means you’ll be a good teammate. Eg, See XQC, for instance.

A very good point, OW is heavy on the teamwork.

Yeah! I would love to see more gals in front and behind the screen. So far the only behind-the-scenes I can think of are translators, streamers and that one former assistant coach for Washington. :frog: :sweat_drops:

Some of the pals I play with, who happen to be gals, are a bit cautious about speaking in voice comms when we play competitive, but lately the people in voice have been really nice! I remember there being a lot more hostility towards my friends’ voices previously, so it was nice to see that’s seemingly changed! I can only assume this is part of why we don’t see that many in professional play… I mean, can you remember the jabs at the all-female League of Legends team?

I’m not saying women are too weak to handle this trashing and slander, but I’m sure many of them would appreciate spending their time elsewhere if that’s how they’re treated.

This is honestly surprising to hear? I run into other females frequently, and even make friends with them if they aren’t the weird type of, “I can be the only female around >:(“.

That being said, I do frequently set up groups and games, leading me to meet a LOT of people lol

It doesn’t matter how many women are playing a game, what matters is how many of them are at the absolute top level of mastery, compared to men. If there are just few hundred men above in skill of the best woman, there you have it, complete absence of women in competition. Just takes a handful of players who are better. :1st_place_medal:

Once again, it doesn’t matter that a million of women is playing a game if top players happen to be men.

I mean. It’s the females that should sign up, fran still exists.

Don’t blame blizzard, blame the female player for not being good enough or they don’t care about being in the league :man_shrugging:
