We see tier lists for heroes all the time. But some maps favor certain heroes also. So, why don’t we ever see map based tier lists?
I would honestly really like to see one, especially for tanks because that’s my most played role.

The content creators who like to make these tier lists always seem to operate on the assumption that everyone automatically knows what heroes are strong or weak on what maps, not taking composition into account.
I don’t know why. But I do know the answer is more nuanced than I believe.
Well, it’s not like I don’t have some idea. It would be nice to see how this changes with balance too. For example, we all know that one of Rein’s best maps is Kings Row. But in his current balance state, where is he on the Kings Row tier list? And if a hero is strong, how do they stack up on their weak maps.
I wouldn’t be upset if there were more map-based educational videos but I can see why it isn’t popular. There are some map guides around, but they get less attention than more generalist guides. They tend to cover more broad concepts such a map being good for dive heroes or snipers. There are 27 maps in Overwatch so making a tier list for each hero on each map would be a lot of work, and when the game changes the tier lists shift as well.
This is probably the answer to my question really. It takes a lot of time and effort and the general population probably wouldn’t appreciate it fully.
It would be nice though.
I would appreciate a deep dive into hero picks and comps in relation to maps, attack and defense, etc.
I’ve been playing since 2016, but always at around a gold/plat level. I still don’t have what I would consider a concrete basis on which to decide hero picks as they pertain to maps.
I’d love to see someone really break this stuff down in detail.
Most of them are using very simplified and very opinionated views of some characters based on seasons. A character can vary wildly from A or S tier to D tier without any changes to them in the seasonal patch, and never ever explain why or what their reasoning is.
Because explaining maps and tier lists requires a far more nuanced and educated approach that most aren’t willing to listen to or even bother with analyzing. For many players, they just want to pick someone strong and not really care about the particulars or the how and why.
Yeah. Not only that, but the maps in general tend to cover a wide variety of heroes. It’s part of Overwatch’s design philosophy that maps are made to conform to all heroes rather than a specific set of heroes. This is why some of the earliest maps in the game tend to be filled with choke points or narrow passages because they needed to cater to Tank and defensive heroes, as well as flying ones or ones that are based around “trap rooms” like Symmetra.
Don’t overthink it. You’re not playing toward the map, but more toward specific compositions. Certain heroes do have some favoritism toward specific maps, but there’s always a way to counter that favoritism with the right hero.
In other words, it’s better to look towards how you can best fit your team’s synergies rather than specifically exploiting map designs towards a specific character. Widowmaker’s weakest maps tend to be Nepal and Lijiang, but there’s almost always a Widowmaker found on these maps and sometimes they do eek out a win.
Because that would be irrelevant in terms of roles, solos, teamplay, sub-classes and so on.
My tier list:
S: Whatever Escort/Hybrid
F: Most Koth maps + kingsrow
Guess what I play.
I think that you are misunderstanding what I’m asking for. I want to know which maps certain heroes excel at in a given meta.
Yeah, you’re right, you said specific heroes and mentioned Tanks in the end, my bad. Koth = S tier for tanks, though. HG exists = flying/jumping tanks, do not exist - ground tanks.
