Why are the old shield nerfs still in OW2?

The shield nerfs were to combat GOATS and Double Shield. In OW2 there is only one tank. The shields should at least go back to normal if not be made even stronger than their original form to compensate for the fact that there’s one less tank.

Actually, and you’re gonna love this, there’s also new shield nerfs thrown in there too. Rein’s shield is actually a lot weaker there than it is on live, as a for instance. The whole idea is to encourage more chaos and less structure.

But you see that beats their logic
They nerfed shields because double shield
So now that double shield is gone… they nerf it again!
Dont you see, how genious decision it is? That will make half of dps pick tank! (to get priority pass)

See, that would work if tanks don’t immediately die once shield breaks…which usually happens 90% of the time

I think that’s what they want though. I’m not saying it like it’s a good thing, I’m just observing what they’re doing and that seems to be what they want. I mean Sombra’s Ult doing 40% of your life in damage without really enough warning to go for cover? Other ults in the game that do big damage now give you big huge warnings like RIP tire or Dva’s Bomb. That effect is really punishing to tanks who stand to lose a lot more life instantly. It seems like OW2 is going to be about DPS fragging out and everyone getting blown up a lot.

My guess that part gets reduced a lot, since a 50% damage buff, plus marking people with wallhacks, is already plenty.

More likely it gets reduced to like 50-to-100 damage.

And instead Sombra gets an instant reload.

Nah fork the shields, give tanks self sustain, shove the team defenses where the sun don’t shine.

Shields are awful. Even after the nerfs I still find myself shooting at shields far too often for my liking, and I hate it.

Generally, the main issue is that want to make sure Tanks aren’t too strong in 1v1 duels with DPS.

There was this idea posted in another thread.

Make it so that armor prevents headshots.

That it’s all 1x damage until the armor is gone.

One of many ideas that could explored.

What is Geoff Goodman gonna do? Buff Sombra out the wazoo, give Bastion a boop and then oops, guess we forgot to increase tank TTK.

it’s probably so the tanks aren’t super oppressive and better buffs can be applied elsewhere

by rein giving up barrier, he gains things like the controllable, cancellable charge, the two firestrikes. Granted some of this power needed to be there regardless since there’s one less tank, but it’s to mainly encourage dealing damage, enforcing corners and brawling

something that rein in ow1 already does

What’s nice about it is that even 200hp heroes could get like 25armor, and it would make them immune to Widow instakills when at full hp.

But it would do almost nothing to Soldier.

To be fair those are ults that can kill you and 40% of your current health is not a death sentence, someone needs to follow up on that for it to be an actual death.

I see it playing out like this; Sombra EMP’s, her team tries to engage a fight but the shields aren’t down meaning distance heroes need to close distance because Winston’s bubble is still up or Rein still has his shield, Sombra gets killed or has to translocate instantly because she’s the only one immediately in the mix - her team doesn’t manage to make great value of the EMP because she did it too early.

or,

She does it midfight which helps her team win the battle, but only if no other ults are popped that killed her earlier in the fight, of which there are many,

or,

she pops it late in the fight which means it’s mostly wasted due to the enemy already having chip damage and it only taking 40% of what’s left, and her team is already down because they’ve been in the fight and it’s at the end of it.

Honestly it’s only useful if your team is good enough to follow up, and they currently struggle to do that with an 8 second window; hack is 1 second now, meaning it’s going to just be a health reduction which will be pretty much instantly negated by a Moira throwing one healing orb and spraying the people who were near enough to EMP, because remember EMP only gets people in radius.

They are nerfing shields and buffing other parts because they don’t want mandatory picks. When you only have 1 tank in the team the difference between a tank with a huge shield and a tank with no shield at all is just too big. They want to pull the tanks closer together so that the shield isn’t as big but they gain more aggressive power as a compensation and then the shieldless tank gains some more tankyness since they need to now tank alone.

The whole idea is to encourage good aim/positioning/etc and less reliance on sitting behind braindead barriers. Welcome to FPS games.

I think you’re thinking of this in OW1 terms. You might be forgetting how much worse mid-fight heals are in OW2, and also we don’t know what else they’re whipping out (I mean Sojourn has a railgun that supposedly shoots through barriers for Pete’s sake) but from what we’ve seen from the Sombra and Bastion reworks and the ttk being so much lower in OW2, I think that 40% is going to be huge.

This did occur to me, but I do think that 40% distributed over how many team mates, that quickly, still speaks to this new game’s design ethos.

You say with hitboxes that look like somebody overinflated the Michelin man and a favor the shooter system that often kills you after you’ve gone behind cover. That’s cute.

Hit

Most FPS games don’t have characters with 3x more health than everyone else (on top of barriers/defensives). Hitboxes are generally decided by how much health you have.
