I really don’t get this. As someone who is currently playing in gold, I’m seeing a LOT of silver-plat duos. They either fall into the ‘clearly being boosted’ category, or the ‘the silver is legitimately awful but they’re friends so the plat doesn’t care’ category.
It seems like a lot of times it’s an older-younger sibling duo, or a boyfriend-girlfriend duo, who “just want to play together.” That’s what… literally every other mode in the game is for.
Why can people group in comp with that big of an SR difference???

I think it’s just the Overwatch development team telling you to go play with your friends which is literally one of the core mechanics of the game is to group up. Don’t worry though LFG is coming.

I mean, there’s only a one rank difference. At least it’s not a GM with a silver. I still don’t think they should queue together but usually the match maker will try to make it up by putting a diamond in one team and all plats on the enemy team. At least, that’s what I got when I got matched with 2 plats and a silver. They put in a diamond on my team to try to make up for the shortfall.

Because solo queue is garbo. Your only chance of enjoying ranked mode is to group up with your friends, so they want to restrict grouping as little as possible.
It’s to make it easier to play it friends. And there are Silvers out there that can play in Plat. When I played with my friend. I was always at the 1000SR limit. The MM treated me as a Plat. Both teams had everyone from Plat. No Diamond compensation. Or putting us in high Gold games. Got 60SR on wins. Was kind of funny confusing people, honestly.

It’s both an exploit and a way to get boosted easily.
1000SR is WAY too much a difference.
I also got in diamond and master matches when I was high gold and I gained 50+SR when I won. Lost only 10 or 8 on a loss.
Just this is enough for someone to get to higher ranks without belonging there, and eventually get used and get gud and sustain that rank while being carried by teammates.
It’s bad and it’s the case for many “Mercy mains in higher ranks”.

That’s not for every character. I didn’t do it for that. I just did it to play with my friend. And finish getting my gold gun.
At least you haven’t seen any bronze-plat queues.
(Technically possible, but it won’t really accomplish much.)
I have to be honest, I really don’t think the main goal of competitive MMR gating should be “for people who want to play with friends.” They should focus on anti-exploit over playing with friends in competitive.
Well how far do you want to block the SR limits? 250SR? I’ve gotten that in 8 wins.
I’d say 500, personally. Just a flat 500 across all ranks instead of the current system. You’re right, 250 would be too restrictive.
SR gap should of been lowered to 500 eons ago. No excuse whatsoever to allow a diamond and gold player in the same game.

Gold is such a bloated tier the odds of the Silver/Plat duo playing any better or worse than two Gold randos is statistically moot if you ask me.

In my experience, a lot of plats play the same as silvers. I hit plat on my alt and was surprised how similar many of the games felt.

It’s a nice trick to boost the plat. The plat plays a dps that demolishes the enemy team 500 SR below their actual skill level while the silver just plays Mercy and hides or holds down that yellow beam like a boss.
