Why are people so rude when it comes to picks?

I’ve been noticing this a ton lately, normally when a team is losing.

Like for example, a rein and a mercy want to go a bastion comp, but neither dps plays bastion and the tank doesn’t want to play orisa. Instead of the 2 people adapting, they start flaming and absolutely laying into everyone who doesn’t want to play this comp.

Also, people don’t let other people play anything slightly off meta. I was playing attack on Havana playing Ashe, and my other dps picked symetra. Instantly the entire team collectively started flaming this person. Everything that went wrong that games was somehow their fault … Despite the fact that the enemy was running a close range comp and the symetra was just tearing through everyone pretty much single handedly carrying at high energy.

I get we all have times we want people to swap off, like no hitscans into pharah, but barring scenarios like that you need to have a bit of faith in your teammates. And even in those scenarios you don’t have to be a jerk about it.

Also, flaming someone to swap off their main BECAUSE they’re playing poorly has to be the dumbest idea I’ve heard. If they’re playing poorly on their main why would swapping to someone who they can’t play help?

“The problem with this game is that people do not see themselfs as bad/low-ranked players but rather temporarily embarassed GM’s” - almost me.

Take a random player in gold and ask them if meta is important and odds are that they will say yes in a heartbeat. This constant obsession with trying to dictate other peoples picks below diamond is nothing else than rejection of the reality most people are stuck in: the vast majority of the players will never climb above diamond. But the obsession to do so is still there, the game does a wonderful job of luring you into comp and trying to get you hooked on SR.

Gamesense and mechanics are to hard for most people to either grasp or spot (or both) and so it is much easier to demand switches in effort to emulate their favorite streamers last match on the same map. I remember back in the days when GOATS was a thing and alot of people demanded that the team picked such a comp but always without the skills to play it. Same with dive, brawl, rush etc. Emulating a comp is easy, playing it is not. And so they do their best to recreate said comp and think it will honestly help them.

Tl;dr People are neither bright nor honest with themself, it is what it is.

I guess that makes a lot of sense. Common sense goes out the window when SR is on the line.

this type of thinking was always odd to me, maybe cause i’m more inclined to doubt my level of skill than hype it up

Well for one, don’t pay attention to people when they complain about who you play, play who you want. Some people take this game way too seriously and then they go expecting everyone else to share their views on how serious someone should take this game.

Secondly, why are people rude? Just because they are, gamers aren’t known to be the most civil or level headed on the internet. Especially when playing a game that pits people against each other. Unfortunately, people just aren’t nice on here. It would be nice if they were, but they aren’t. If anyone gets overly toxic with you just report and block them though.

Or if you like playing a character that gets a lot of hate, maybe just don’t join VC and mute the match and team text chats. If you play comp people are going to complain about your character, if you don’t care what mode you play and just want to play perhaps consider sticking to arcade. I only seen a few people who were toxic in those ones, I see more toxic people when in QP or Comp.

It’s because players of this game have been taught to either blame themselves or blame somebody else, and it’s easy to pick on someone who’s playing a hero that you associate with losing games if you are weak-willed.

That too, what’s worst is it’s not even just children who are too young to play this game but do anyways, it’s actually more teenagers and adults who get toxic and complain about this type of stuff which is pretty pathetic. You know there is something wrong here, when the 11 year olds who play this are better sports than the teens and full grown adults.

Maybe if they want a bastion, they should switch to bastion themselves….oh wait…they can’t

Losses are a team effort. Their rudeness is just projection and scapegoating. Game wasn’t designed around one tricks and metas. It’s about switching heroes on the fly to change the course of battle. That means a personal responsibility to educate ourselves about multiple heroes to make the best picks and counter picks… but it doesn’t mean bending the knee to the demands of tm8s that probably wouldn’t switch if you suggested they should yet feel entitled to make demands of you.

People are just butts basically… pay them no mind.

I recently picked up Widow, and even getting say Bronze or silver elims, and reasonable damage, a loss must be Widow’s fault. Ditto for Sym, and I am an above average Sym. Strangely, some players think this of Echo despite often having say Gold elims / Silver damage, or even Gold damage… it’s baffling.

its very common in people.

dps for instance might have a really good game where they have all golds 40 elims and 20k dmg. and they will, in there mind, see this as there ‘normal’ level of performance. but then when they cant do it in a game all of a sudden its “these people are so bad omg”. instead of realizing, that the team you played into was better then there elo, and you were hard carried. it had nothing to do with your own skill level.

the same thing happens to all roles, a tank might feed excessively but a healer might keep em alive through it all or a dps kills everyone in time. so the tank thinks they did a good job. ect

I play whatever I want, I bought the game lol. As soon as I see players getting toxic, I just leave chat and block chat. Im going to play the game my way and win playing my favorite characters. Im not throwing if I’m switching to counter the enemy team and I’m not throwing for playing off meta heroes.

It is just them projecting their own insecurities on you. Very common for a player doing poorly to find a scapegoat and unpopular heroes are easy pickings!

role q has been failed.
We need “play around me” q

This is a fact.

The only wrinkle here is that counter picking DOES work in gold.

It’s not coordinated enough to have consistently good team compositions but switching to counter an effective player on the enemy team works.

I would love to be carried for once. Every role I pick, support, damage, tank, doesn’t matter, 3-4 golds, not bragging, just a disappointing observation. Why is aiming and teamwork so hard for these randos? Why do I always play against a well oiled machine, while being stuck with drunken monkeys? I can’t remember the last time I saw a decent dva on my team. And the stacks, who won’t heal anyone outside their little club make me want to beat them with an oar. I don’t need validation on my skill, I just need better team mates.

MOOD. I do not even need them to be good, just make them on the same page, please.

I don’t think negatively of the picks on my team unless I don’t see any results. Even then, I’ll keep my mouth shut as the arguement that would come of it just isn’t worth it.

Also, flaming someone to swap off their main BECAUSE they’re playing poorly has to be the dumbest idea I’ve heard. If they’re playing poorly on their main why would swapping to someone who they can’t play help?

It’s more complicated than that.

Switching to something else when you perform poorly can bring a lot of good. In OW, performing poorly can be an accumulation of multiple things. Are you tilted ? Are you not used to the character you’re using ? Are you simply being countered over and over ? In the last two cases, the problem might lie mostly in what you picked and you should switch. Just picking an easier character to play or a counterpick to a high value player in the enemy team can be the difference between a close call win or getting absolutely stomped. I came across these scenarios a lot of time.

To put it simply, if you keep getting no value and keep respawning over and over, you should be switching. Recognising when you’re not gaining any value with what you’re playing with is part of gamesense.

That said, I absolutely disapprove players chimping out at other players for not playing their way. Screaming in chat won’t make people play better. This is the way of the scrubs.
