in super early descriptions they were described as being “omnic energy” but any mention of that has been quietly removed from official sources.
Exactly. Hanzo, Genji and FoxGirl are all simply psychotic… there are no animals. It’s all in their heads.
Unlike Torb… who carries 80 gallons of molton lava in his left arm at all times.
Why don’t you do some research instead of being an uneducated clown.

racist? no. feeding into Orientalism? yes, majorly. but that’s not really that big of an issue considering there’s a cowboy running around 200 years in the future. its just a bit cliché to make the Asian characters cool and different.
I see what I see… the whole cinematic tolds a myth and ties it into the story of the shimada, especially with the whole “Only a Shimada can control the dragons”
Maybe it’s not necessary magic, but rather something like Marvel’s X-Men, that the Shimadas (and Kiriko) are genetically able for energy projection, making Kiriko something of a mix of Nightcrawler and Danni Moonstar
Lol dude
Onmyōdō (陰陽道, also In’yōdō, lit. ‘The Way of Yin and Yang’) is a system of natural science, astronomy, almanac, divination and magic
And magic is not a thing that exists in OW lore by default. It’s no a fantasy game
It is quite funny how Korea is this huge military force with Army Mechs, then you go to Japan and they still fight with swords.
religion isn’t canonical in Overwatch lore, Kiriko and the Shimada’s may be based on existing belief systems but it’s not the same, and its not bigoted to point out that only Japanese characters utilise them.
Science fiction is a genre of Fantasy storytelling though
I think you understood what I mean, it’s not a Warcraft-like game or anything
I wasn’t 100% serious bro… just laughing at the crowd who looks for offense in anything they can contrive.
I mean… if those Swords can literally cut a house big omnic into pieces, that does not necessarily sound so impractical xD
Well, per lore he was always a ninja but after his ‘coming back from death’ trick he was made a cyborg.
lol, my bad. I guess its better to make the point before they can reply though.
It’s a direct ripoff of the cowboy/redneck vibes from Starcraft’s Terran. Which actually works thematically for a futuristic theme surprisingly enough. Hell, echo is basically a ripoff of the purifiers from starcraft2.
Ofc. Just that OW always was a Science Fiction snd with that a Fantasy story.
Btw… how thry explained the Dragonsword in the Zero Hour cinematic?
You know, I’m not japanese but I’m kinda really darn tired about western stereotypes about japanese culture. E.g. ninjas and martial arts and whatever. (I watched Predators and immediately thought that “Oh they have a japanese character, surely he’s going to swing a katana.” AND what a freaking surpririse.) With my friends who don’t only consume mainstream media devices, I actually ended up watching some Japanese thrillers and drama etc, stuff not geared towards westers audiences. It was very refressing. What they bring here mostly is so stereotypical that it gets boring.
My problem is why Kiriko seems to be another traditional Japanese character. Why couldn’t we get like some cyberpunk esque Tokyo character she could have still been ninja like but maybe explain that she’s some type of corporate spy.
Could have made some idol or magical girl like character that uses tech.
Honestly I can’t remember much character types / eras that are of Japanese inspiration but like for sure they had options
Also Widow and Kerrigan, she even has a Kerrigan skin.
ALL heroes in OW are hilariously stereotypical characters.
