Why are Discords free lootboxes not available in Belgium?

Title sums it up, here’s some explanation as to why I ask this. Belgium has some rules that work against paid lootboxes of any kind, so certain lootboxes, like the Legendary Lootboxes in the Battle Pass, have been made unavailable in our country. Any free lootboxes are still available.
A few hours ago I tried to use my Discord code for the free 5 lootboxes, but ended up with errors that wouldn’t disappear after a few tries.
When I contacted support and asked why these lootboxes aren’t working they said this is because of my location, even though they also confirm that the free lootboxes from Discord work the same as earning free lootboxes in-game. They told me to provide feedback on the forums and hope that something changes, so here I am.

Here the answer I got:
I understand that you received a code that you can’t claim from Overwatch after you participated in the Discord quests. After a careful review of your account I can see that you can’t claim this code because of the restrictions in your country, these free lootboxes are the same as the ones earned from playing the game and Blizzard can’t go against a country’s ruling when the country says both lootboxes examples promote gambling. You can provide feedback on the Overwatch forums and hope something changes, Support can’t change this. I understand that this isn’t the answer that you were looking for, feel free to contact us again if you have any other question about anything else.

Its not only about paid lootboxes but all in general.
Before this, they used to give only materials or coins to “craft” the skins you want, now that mechanic doesn’t exist.

Afaik this is more on your country’s laws fault than in Blizzard. Good luck with the suggestion tho.

Same here, From Belgium as well. Kind of stupid we can’t even get Free lootboxes from a discord mission while everyone else can, it’s bad enough that we get scammed out of Premium’s in the battlepass. But Cmon… the discord ones are litterally free. Hope blizzard atleast gives the belgium accounts some kind of compensation.

Odds and what you can get out of them are literally stated. So technically you know what you can get and at what rate you can get them.

Heya same here from Belgium I contacted them also about it and got the answer of ‘‘lootboxes are only for the USA’’ (wtf?) and Reminding me of the belgian gambling law. Though the law States it’s only for paid lootboxes not for free lootboxes that are earned so why is it okay to give out lootboxes that are earned in game but lootboxes also earned from playing the game but through a code is not okay. What is the diffrence? They are both earned through gameplay and are free.

So I got another answer from blizzard: ‘‘players in Belgium can earn loot boxes by playing the game. This means that while you cannot Purchase lootboxes you can still receive them through gameplay. this aligns with the regulations set by the Belgian gaming commision, which allows players to earn loot boxes but prohibits the purchase of them with real money or in game currency like gold. if you received loot boxes through a discord code, it’s important to note that these codes may not be affected by the same restrictions as Purchasing however the lootboxes you earn through gameplay are still valid and can be claimed The belgian gaming commision has classified paid lootboxes as gambling which is why blizzard has implemented these restrictions. While you can earn loot boxes, you cannot buy them, and this is a legal compliance issue.’’ The part about the paid lootboxes is understandable BUT The important line here is that these lootboxes from codes may NOT be under the same restrictions as the paid lootboxes meaning that they have no reason not to give us the lootboxes.

our goverment is dumb as a brick!

there’s nothing blizzard (or anybody for that matter) can do about it…

but we all knew things like this where going to happen with those pancakes in Brussels… they’re not getting any money out of the lootboxes… so that’s illegal gambling… play the lotto, that’s legal  seriously question the IQ of those people.

edit
if you haven’t noticed, i’m from Belgium as well :joy:

Because the Belgians were just a little too okay with being occupied by the Germans in WW2, so no lootboxes.

Yet another Belgium L :relieved:

Send an e-mail to info@gamingcommission.be and complain about the problem. Maybe that will get things moving. Apparently, Belgium’s gambling law is poorly written and doesn’t allow for free loot boxes, so they’re banned in the same way as paid loot boxes.
