Why are alt accounts allowed ? (genuine question)

I don’t understand the logic behind it, and I genuinely can’t think of any justification for it. Can someone enlighten me ?

Alt accounts for what? The game? This forum?

They don’t require justification. It would be better for you to explain why you think it should not be allowed. Allowing them is the default position.

Prepare for everyone with alts to flood in 3…2…

In game. All I can see is how they ruin the fun for everyone. They don’t even bring more money to Blizz, so that’s not an excuse. So I really can’t think of a valid reason why they are allowed.

Again, allowing them is the default position.

If you can articulate why allowing them is sufficiently negative or harmful in some way that justifies taking them away as an option, I would like to hear it.

I am one person, so by default I am part of “everyone.” I can assure you that my fun has not been ruined by some people having multiple accounts.

I wish you were right. There are numerous reasons people have them, not least of which is having something to switch to the moment you are banned for some stupid (or legitimate) reason.

I don’t see why they shouldn’t be allowed.

Smurfs are one thing and aren’t allowed, but alt accounts aren’t really a problem.

I don’t see why they shouldn’t be allowed. Keep in mind that there is a difference between alt accounts and Smurf accounts. All smurfs are alts, but not all alts are smurfs.

Ok, Mr semantics.

How about you wanna play, and someone with 3 hours in game, 19 minutes on Tracer, comes into your lobby and dominates ? I suppose that would not even slightly annoy you ? It’s perfectly fine, I guess…

Hmm… my assumption is that, more often than not, those bans are justified. But I might be wrong. I’ve never been banned, so… I wouldn’t know.

See my example above.

It seriously doesn’t. I enjoy playing against competent players. I am stuck in pisslow where I am regularly winning one on ones with Hog players. A Smurf every now and again is an exciting prospect. The inherent issue is that it does not happen as often as people say it does. Mada mada!

Well, ok then. I should “work” on me and my reaction to it. Silly post. Anyway, moving on.

In OW 1, they brought money as you had to buy game to get alt and there was no rule against it. They were happy to accept payment from the same card for another account.
Than they made OW2 free to play and they panicked - so they put phone number protection to prevent you from getting multiple accounts.
If they really cared about it, they would make rule from the beginning and they would prevent people from purchasing account with the same card in OW1.

Now, if they ever make it a solid rule, I also expect them to refund me for my alt account.

See what above?
With the way the new player experience is designed, alts very quickly get put into the MMR their main account is and then put into the rank their main account is.

If you see an alt in your match, it’s because of one of two things.

  • They are that rank
  • They’re smurfing

Most alts fall into scenario 1.

I don’t know why you’re saying this sarcastically.

No, it would not annoy me and yes, it is perfectly fine. Are you telling me that it “ruins your fun” if you ever lose a match because one of your opponents is better than you?

Better within a certain range, no. Clearly dominating, yes. But forget it. You’re right, I’m wrong. I got the message, thank you.

It is just my opinion. There is nothing wrong with not enjoying the experience. That being said, I do believe a mindset shift could be really healthy for your personal happiness. Smurfs gonna come through and call YOU Papa. Trust.

That’s very wise. I’ll work on that

I have not played with a Smurf. The anti Smurf system “works.” Unfortunately it also causes people to get boosted to ranks they don’t belong in, which is much, much worse.

Do you mean alt accounts or smurf accounts because those 2 are different things.

Let’s say I want to learn to play Doomfist. In order to do so I have to play comp (you really can’t learn much in QP). If I do that though I’m probably throwing about 1k SR or 50 games before I actually get a fair match. The once I learn Doomfist, or I feel like ranking up, I will basically win so easily that I might as well be a smurf.

Alternatively I can use a Plat alt account and be exactly where I should be and get the exact same games without having to throw 50 games to do so and then smurf 50 more when I decide to rank back up.
