Why all the Widowmaker?

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed, but as of late, there’s a widowmaker in almost every game. I have no particular issue with this, I’m just confused as to why. Did I miss something? did she get a buff? I’m legitimately confused.

Have you seen the current meta? This has allowed widow to shine, which means that there will be guaranteed widow on at least one of the teams resulting in an enemy widow counter being needed

Tracer/Genji/Winston aren’t there to harass her and she hits hard which is good against Brigitte.

I used to play tracer but as soon as the enemy picks Brigitte it’s Widow or Hanzo time, now

It might also be to do with how prevalent Widow is in the Overwatch Leagues. I know not everyone watches the league, but she is present in almost every match and I am sure a fair few players take their cues on what to play based on what the pros are running.

thanks for the replies everyone, I haven’t followed the meta in a really long time, and being that I’ve played Overwatch since day 1, it was very shocking to me to see so much Widow being played.

I know what you mean. It is a little disconcerting. What is worse is seeing top tier play immitated at the lower levels of the game. It is really amazing to see what pros like SooN and Pine can do with Widowmaker, but that doesn’t mean you should try to mimic them and expect the same results if you’re down in Gold or Plat (like me).
Overwatch League should come with a ‘Don’t try this on your account’ advisary message :stuck_out_tongue:

Snipers excel in the current meta because of the presence of Armor, which severely hurts characters who can’t deal powerful hits. So, naturally, we should expect characters like Hanzo, Widow, Junk, and Pharah to start appearing more frequently. Obviously this isn’t accounting for other factors that may affect pickrate (i.e. Junk’s recently nerfs will cause him to go down), but overall, you should be seeing more of these characters
