Who is The Mohawk Guy?

Hello guys. Hello Jeff from the Overwatch Team.

http://i.imgur.com/zqjl91J.png

He appeared for the first time in Ana Origins video. It was two years ago. He is the mohawk guy, bottom left. Mysterious, cool looking dude, presumably important member of Overwatch/Blackwatch considering the other people on the photo. Only the woman on the far right remains equally unknown.

For a long time, I thought he could be Liao, mostly because of his looks and considering the context of the picture, it would have make sense to put the 6 founders of Overwatch standing all together. However, i believe it was somehow confirmed during a panel con that this guy wasn’t Liao. (can’t find the source again for that) But… is this true ? Did we lied to us ? I remember that a comic on the Omnic crisis was teased, then canceled.

But, more recently, after a dead silence for a very long time, someone pointed out a mohawk guy silhouette, a little similar, present in Doomfist comics. We can see him at Talon’s table.

Is it the same person ? If so, who is he really ? A bad guy now ? Will we ever know ? Is he relevant ? Why show him to us so clearly back then, to never mention him ever again or even naming him. He doesn’t appear in any previous concept art shown. He doesn’t appear in the list of Winston recalled agents. Was he simply retconned ? Forgotten ?

We don’t know.

If you think like me he is charismatic, and that you would like to know more about him, or even playing him (this is my ultimate wish since I saw him), please consider commenting so we can reach the art team, the devs, the Overwatch team, and get even a hint. A tiny answer to all those questions. Maybe even a name, codename. Whatever.

Peace.

We know he is not Liao, that was confirmed a long time ago.

It is possible those two pictured are the same character. It is also possible he is this guy who also sports a mohawk and was Recalled ^https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/295586890797678592/514258040875384844/latest.png

I’m pretty sure you mean the youtuber Blame The Controller. He is probably the first one to notice that.

I don’t think so.
There is no physical ressemblance, at least to me. Even the haircut is off considering the hairline. If you compare drawed characters like Kimiko or Mirembe, you can easily identify them from the comics. Here, I don’t see it anywhere.

Where can we find the source confirming it wasn’t Liao, already ? Can’t find it anymore.

Maybe, I don’t know for that YouTuber. I happened to see it on Reddit a while ago first.

Here’s the vid.

SDCC 2016. It wasn’t recorded so all we have are secondary sources. Try Hammeh

The photo is from 20 years ago. Mirembe/Kimiko is from ~6 years ago. The mohawk guy from Recall dhares the same facial geometry in exchange for a smaller mohawk. I would find it very hard to believe someone keeps the same exact appearance for 20 years, just look at the rest of the heroes in the photo.

Probably retconned out of existence.

There’s no reason to retcon out a random and potentially unimportant face when they can simply just never mention them again. Mirembe will likely never show up again but she wasn’t retconned out of existence.

“He wasn’t anyone special and that art wasn’t correct anyway so just ignore that guy.” - said at some panel in the future, probably

I am hoping someone cool lol He is def important as Ana redacted this and the female to the right’s name.

I don’t say you are wrong, although, I don’t see the ressemblance between the two. The nose is really different, for example. The cheeks also. The shape of the eyes. For the receeding hairline, could be the age indeed, but I don’t feel the same vibe also from the two characters overall.

As for a character mysteriously staying the same for 20 years… I would like to point out to Angela Ziegler.

Please no.

Why do you hate me ? XD

I hope too. I like to think he is somehow relevant and that the Talon silhouette is him, but that would be a big guess isn’t it…

However, I feel like nobody really cares about this guy at this point. I’m fairly surprised, because I kinda feel being one of the few people to think he looks dope and that his presence on Ana Origins Video for this important picture is really intriguing. Makes me a little sad and hopeless to even see him one day again.

Although, I see many speculation videos on YouTube taking him as a thumbnail whenever a new name comes up. Liao, Doomfist, Emre, “Nemesis”. He will become the default skin for every new upcoming hero, haha.

Anyway, I keep my efforts. I recently contacted Mr. Michael Chu on Twitter. Maybe he will be able to give us a hint, or even a little name. If this character is dead or retconned, or anything.

I will keep you informed if I ever get an answer, but I highly doubt it.

I try not to get my hopes up about lore anymore. I’m sorry :pensive:

It’s true it’s been a while since the last comic isn’t it… But the last animated short hinted some interesting lore things, no ?

The last comic dropped in April with Retribution’s release. And it’s still not up on the site with the other comics, only available as a .pdf on some website.

Thank you for that, I completely missed it !

I hope we got one more solid comics as soon as possible.

As for the Mohawk Guy, I don’t know why but his looks makes me think of a Counter Close Combat, Aikido Style, who could be able to “reflect” any physical/no hitscan attack towards him. Like a punch, a rocket punch, a dash, a blade slash, a charge, a shield bash. Not by overwhelm with strenght but with agility and technic. I think it could be fun as a playstile. What do you think he could be ?

The name Emre Sarioglu is a curious one as it seems to match the mystery man in terms of appearance, lore timeline and his age could match him as a private rank.

I believe he is also seen in the very first trailer and holds great importance:

The goatee can refer to him, even if he looks a little more chubby/muscular if it’s him haha. It’s true it’s weird that Emre Sarioglu was indeed mentionned in White Dome mission but never shown. In the picture Torbjörn already lost his arm so it’s past this event. Could be him. It’s turkish, I believe ?

Would be interesting. A turkish hero. Even if I see him more as asian, but I seem to be the only one each time I ask around me. x)

These are actually the exact things that I thought looked the same to me.

  • Nose pulls to a point (perspective makes it weird on the photo, but it appears pointy to me)
  • Cheekbone hits below eye level
  • Narrow eyes
  • Hairline has a curve that pulls in from the sideburn and arches back towards the mohawk

Except she doesn’t. She looks like a teenager in the photo because she is a teenager. Her next chronological appearance is Junkenstein, which is about 8 years ago, give or take a year.

Emre was confirmed at some point after Brigitte’s reveal to have no lore. He was likely just a name at the time, rather than a name to be paired with a similarly throwaway face from the cinematic trailer.

If anything, I think this profile is more to be tied to the concept art we can see in this early development image.

The guy on the left beside the hazmat dude. Same haircut, same metallic jaw, same punkish style. For me, this is where he came from. This is also why I think Mohawk Guy isn’t the same person. Maybe I’m wrong.

As for Mercy, thought her default skin/in-game appaerance was canon ? I remember that even Genji or someone mentionned her didn’t aging ? Maybe just flirt though. (or was it Ana ?)

Can you give us the source about Emre not being relevant ? Too bad if it’s real, because I would love to see an Overwatch Event like Retribution but whith Operation White Dome…

It was Mei:
Mei: Doctor Ziegler, I don’t think you’ve aged a day since I last saw you.
Mercy: And neither have you, Mei.

I think this is just harmless compliments, not an actual indication that Mercy hasn’t aged. Attractive women tend to maintain their attractive looks, and women in general age very little between their 20s and 30s unless they have had a hard or stressful life.
