They are going to have to rediscover that people enjoy playing the heroes they enjoy. What a shock! We as professional game designers could have never anticipated this behavior.
I dont really ask for niche specifically, but I am not adverse to heroes being map and mode dependent. In fact, that would probably be a better way to balance, shake up the meta.
That would be incredibly lame to the person who gets stuck with the niche character pick just because they like a certain hero. It practically makes them have to give up playing the character they want to play for at least 50% of the games they play.
I heard Symm mains loved playing their niche hero and miss being Point A TP bots.
Mercy mains want nothing more than their niche of being glued to their BF’s or BFF’s backside.
Widow mains like sniping niche map points.
Hanzo mains want their simple geometry niche back
Zen mains want nothing more than to be niche discord bots.
Rein mains just want to be the niche hero who stands at chokepoints holding RMB all game long.
And Hog mains just want to be niche so they play the Well map all day long—so much in fact, that they even made a custom Hogs-only game mode for it. (Weirdos!)
Mei has been and always will be one of my favorite heroes to play in OW. I also have more time played on her than nearly every hero outside of Ana & Zen.
It’s okay she’s niche. Okay in the sense that I accept balancing all these heroes is a nightmare and no one is ever happy. Could she be better? Certainly. Do I want to see some ideas around her kit be better designed and implemented, yes. Does everyone who want that for Mei as well, have the same ideas as I do to make that happen? Of course not.
If she improves in a way I enjoy, great. If not, oh well. Live service games that are competitive in nature are like that.
I hate Hog players who let this rework happen. It is a disgrace and the environmental Hog are beta. I will take THEM off the map. And we go together. The only friend they will ever have.
I don’t think that’s the same as wanting to be able to only do that. I think they would be satisfied if they could do those things and more, at least more so than they would being forced to only do that one thing.
You can tell that this would be the case because of how much Widow mains don’t like being instantly deleted by Sombras. Or how Hog mains don’t like being countered by a small amount of purple juice staining their shirts. etc.
The issue is that they will eventually hit a wall where she can’t be balanced into a better spot because it would break her, but at the same time she’s doing so poorly against everything else that she’s essentially useless. Not only that, but new heroes will more than likely replace her by doing her job better with less drawbacks.
I feel like that alone could and should be mitigated by reworking her kit into something that doesn’t make her niche (this does not mean she has to lose everything, just the problematic parts of her kit).
Do you try and make heroes like hog orisa mauga (heroes majority of players hate playing against) equally viable as heroes like rein winston zarya (heroes majority of players find honest to face)
OR
do you just pull the bandaid off and accept heroes like hog mauga and orisa are a mistake, people dont enjoy when they’re good, and relegate them to being weaker niche heroes
Since the start of ow2 especially, the devs have been trying to push for option 1 where every hero is viable. I think they’ve eventually come to the conclusion that their philosophy is flawed in that most players specifically hate playing against a group of certain heroes and it makes way more sense to just balance the game around heroes people actually enjoy playing instead of trying to make every hero, even the ones people hate, playable
Sure you may lose the odd hog orisa mauga player who is fed up that you made their hero purposefully weak, but in doing so chances are you actually lose less people overall from the collateral damage of people quitting because they hate when those heroes are being picked. You anger and lose a minority to keep the majority happy
So much this. All the heroes should be balanced around their realistic potential in the highest tiered ladder gameplay regardless of what that hero is or does.
Not relevant. What a hero is or does is more important than their competitive potential
Fun > balance
It doesnt matter if a hero is balanced if they’re not fun to play with or against people will stop playing the game.
It doesnt matter if a hero like hog or mauga is balanced, majority of people stop playing when they’re played. Only real answers are rework them or make them not playable by making them weak.
You can have a game be fun and unbalanced, you cant have an unfun but balanced game. No one is going to play that
Im not asking for niche heroes. Im asking for heroes nrhat do things we havent seen. Like a tank with a wall style sheild and heavy magnetic rail cannon, or a melee support that has fire damage.
Are we now saying that the community wants to one-trick? Have we gone from one-trick bad to one-trick good? Between posts like this and people not wanting to counterswap that’s the conclusion I’m drawing.
Your idea of “fun” or “annoying” is invalid and therefore is not considerable in the face of something actually tangible like a balance state of the game. Just because you personally feel one way is a horrible excuse not to actually balance the game. Therefore it’s just a completely asinine take. What a hero does is utmost definitely not more important than their realistic potential in the highest tiered gameplay. Even amusing the idea that variety existing should just be a sham would be ignorant
