I’ve been playing against a lot of Sombras lately due to her newest rework and they’ve frustrated me quite a lot lately. So I want to know who actually hard counters her… I feel like she doesn’t really have a hard counter other than a change of play style. She’s technically a counter to everyone to some degree
The only actual hard counter is Brigitte.
There are many characters who do well against her, though. I included a bit more detail in a different thread: With Sombra being at least relevant because of her changes, what are her counters? - #3 by Bombz-1611
Widowmakers Ult basically makes her unable to play how she wants for its duration.
The counter is aim and reaction time and positioning.
Sombra seems like a nightmare further down the ranks because she has a lock on 6 second CC ability. When you hit a rank where people or yourself are decent at the game, you will notice shes kinda just pesky, but not a MAJOR threat until she has EMP.
Maybe Mei can “Spy check” like a pyro in tf2? D.VA can use her shotguns to do that pretty well.
Geoff hard counters Sombra
Hanzo is her best counter.
Funny how you mention that, because I’ve always wanted Blizzard to add a TF2 Pyro-esque flamethrower hero to the game. That would be the only TRUE hard counter to Sombra, because such a hero can spray flames all around their area to easily reveal Sombra from invis (something that’s particularly important thanks to her new indefinite stealth), similar to how the Pyro in TF2 can easily spy check with his flamethrower. Not to mention, if Sombra was taking damage over time from fire, her hack and invis would effectively be disabled as she can’t use either of those abilities when taking damage
Brigitte is her biggest counter, as her stun will prevent Sombra from doing any real damage even if she gets away, and Brigitte’s healing will negate Sombra’s low damage completely. But if you just stick close to your team you won’t need a counter to Sombra.
Well, Overwatch has its equivalent to the pyro: it is Mei.
McCree is very good against her, and any range at all. Widow, Hanzo, Mei, McCree are all very viable picks against her.
If you want to solo counter her, probably Brigitte - she can stun her emp and burst her down which you need to try to finish her before she teleports
If you work with your team, it’s best to use another Sombra and whoever does a successful Emp first wins
Flamethrowers would be cool but probably wouldn’t be much better at Sombra checking than Mei.
If you can aim then definitely. Just deck her before she translocates away. Any burst damage hero like Hanzo works well.
Everyone counters Sombra. She seems powerful at first, but hack is not nearly the oppressive CC people make it out to be. Stay with your team and she’ll be forced off by your friends. Learn basic strafing and aiming and you can out-fight her even after being hacked. Do both and she’ll never be an issue.
If you force her to translocate, that’s as good as a kill. Your team is fighting with a 6v5 advantage any time the enemy has a Sombra trying to set up interference runs.
Biggest counter to sombra is game sense.
So, in theory, everyone.
If you want to go beyond that, widow, hanzo and brig are among her hardest counters, she can’t kill widow or hanzo effectively unless she gets a lucky jump and if widow ults you’re flat out useless for 15 entire seconds, adding even more to your downtime.
Trying to kill hanzo is a death sentence unless he’s really bad/low health and unaware. (this might get a tad better with the head hitbox reduce, maybe)
Brig just utterly destroys her, armor means your tickle gun is one step away from healing them, tankyness means you can’t go on her, burst healing + armor puts an end to any and every single attempt at finishing off someone, your hack doesn’t disables her aoe healing and it’s kinda of a wasted hack compared to other targets and her stun means you can’t get anywhere somewhat near her or you’re risking death.
“Spychecking” and being with your team, BUT not clumped together destroys sombra effectivity.
People just don’t know these things AFTER 2 GODAMN YEARS because sombra is a non factor.
Your last line is hilarious and accurate: Sombra’s biggest advantage right now is that she’s been so bad for so long that no one’s used to fighting her and make dumb mistakes.
I don’t really like to think of Mei like that though, since she doesn’t apply a damage-over-time effect like Pyro does. Plus she utilizes ice, not fire
