Genuinely curious as to what people think is the hardest hero to learn in OW2. I’m thinking more based on their kit rather than like how well they’re balanced.
For instance, I think Sombra is a relatively hard character to learn (might have some OW1 bias because she was difficult to learn then too). Its not your typical playstyle or something seen in other FPS shooters like soldier’s kit is, as it’s much more reliant on map knowledge and game sense.
What are your thoughts on this and who do you think is the Hardest Hero to Learn?
Doomfist. Unless you’re really good with him, you’ll be feeding most of your games and losing to other tanks who can get more value easily.
Winston is pretty hard to play in 5v5, at least for me. Even Dafran had a hard time climbing as winton.
Genji/Tracer/Widowmaker. Genji has medium skill floor but high skill ceiling. Both tracer and widowmaker have high skill floor and high skill ceiling. You’ll be throwing both on tracer/widow if you’re not good at them.
Most supports have a lowish skill floor, because you can get value in most games in low elo just by healing and enabling your teammates. But some supports have lower skill floor than others (e.g. moira). But ana/bap/zen/kiriko/illari/lucio has the highest skill ceiling.
Can definitely see why some would say these are hard to learn. Especially for new players learning either echo’s 3D aiming while above enemies which isn’t common in other FPS or Tracer’s blink in, shoot, blink out style of play where you have to track where you are, where you’re going to be, and where you’ll go back to all at once.
Yup, He’s very unique (gameplay wise) even for the OW style of gameplay since his kit allows you to do non-conventional things like pull other players to you or place a giant roadblock as a Support.
Yup, and if you don’t know how to play her it’s a guaranteed throw pick. Knowing when to hack and when to tp away are really challenging to learn imo.
I forgot about how hard Doomfist was to learn, thank god for Doomfist parkour maps
Winston is one of those heroes that feels like he has no impact when you first play him and it takes a while to over come that mental hurdle of not wanting to play him.
Genji’s dash recharge was definitely something that took me a while to realize existed since it’s not blatantly obvious with how little the ability UI can be. Maybe that’s just me with my really bad eyesight though.
Tracer/Widow being some of the most fun heroes in the game imo deserve their strong kits.
Most of the supports are quite easy to pick up with some minor details about them being hard to learn. For instance, Mercy being exceptionally easy to play, but extremely difficult to master her tech like (old) super jump and some of the weird flight mechanics that I still don’t understand.
Same here, but I don’t have the patience for spectator simulator so I’m probably never going to learn it either
Ball to me is the hardest because he seems to run counter to any other hero by rolling into enemies. The awareness needed to grapple up and slam down is so difficult for me to get right too. Without knowing how to engage and disengage you are either a troll or just feeding.
Doom is tough too, if you don’t know what you are doing you will just end up feeding.
In a general sense I’m not too sure, I don’t know what other people find difficult. Maybe Sombra, because I don’t think a new player would really have any clue how to play her effectively, especially if they approach her with a straight forward damage dealer mentality (which they most likely would, since she is in the damage-role)
Personally though, and I know this’ll sound stupid, I struggle the most with Junkrat. Like, I just can not aim slow moving arching projectiles, and I don’t know where I’m supposed to place his trap, and his mines sending you upwards even if they’re detonated above you just feels so dang unintuitive to me.
Also tracking enemies under you can be tricky sometimes . For newer players you have to get used to aiming from very weird angles. And not just tracking her beam but also flicks with her primary. She’s one of the more mechanically challenging heroes in the game as she tests 3d aiming with different inputs. Very hard but feels so good when you carry with her.
100% agree, but do you think his current state has a higher or lower skill ceiling than when he was a DPS?
Technically true, however, I wouldn’t say you need to know how to play all of them. Maybe like a 3/5ths of the selection would be sufficient since their can only be 5 players on the enemy team and one of them is bound to play a hero you know
Absolutely. Once you finally learn him though, he’s so much more impactful and fun to play (ignoring the fact that a large majority of plays can be stopped because… a tiny tracer stepped in your path before you got enough momentum from hook).
Same for Doom, incredibly fun playstyle with lots of versatility when you know how to use it.
I’d say the hardest thing about junkrat would be learning his grenade arc since you can practically throw his abilities anywhere and get use out of them. 9/10 throwing a trap in a random spot is more likely to get a person in it than if you methodically calculate the best possible angle for it.
All you have to do is land one shot with your primary and then finish the kill with his concussion mines, so just practice away in one of those custom games or even in the practice range on bots.
You basically just described how to play Ball in OW1 before the grapple nerf lol
I’d say Wrecking Ball. He brings next to no base value and he is weird as all heck. Luckily I hate the idea of a hamster character because if I tried to learn him I’d get banned for gameplay sabotage.
If we are talking about learning (Skill floor) and not mastering, probably the mobile heroes. Tracer, DF, Genji, Ball.
Sure everyone can “use” them, but in order to be functional and not hit walls and move like a decent player … OOF. Takes quite a while. Its a counter intuitive mechanic that you have to lean into really hard.
