Which OG heroes would still fly today?

So hero design has obviously changed a lot over the years. There is a higher baseline level of mobility and complexity. Every OW2 hero has an ability at least as good as a genji dash for getting around and you don’t see any new heroes where the kit is as mechanically simple as jump, bubble, zap or teleport, gun, wraith.

And the kits are more cohesive too, you don’t have any new heroes like soldier or widowmaker where the gun is 90% of the kit and 2 of the other abilities could be replaced with comparable sidegrades without really affecting the character overall. Ults are also more complex just compare how many options you have when your teammates are stuck in a cage fight vs when they’re stuck in a grav

But then there are obviously some new constraints with time as well like how hard CC and true oneshots are mostly frowned upon now

So the question is, which OG heroes would feel appropriate still if they were released today and wouldn’t cause a huge controversy?

Tracer, I think. Very complex mobility with huge potential for skill expression, and every part of her kit somehow fits together seamlessly. Her ult is small, but it’s made up for by charging quickly

As for how much controversy she may or may not cause, who ever knows

The Key Word you are looking for is, Players Evolution

For example, if today, a character like Tracer were to launch, everyone would most likely unintall the game because of how outrageous and broken, the community would feel about such kit

But most original players know how to play around her.

Back in the day, it took around 6 months for players to learn how to use cover when knowing D.Va could drop her Ult

But, the most recent incidents with Sombra, prove that no one is feeling ok with her toolkit

Some will say its Hack, others will say Virus; or TP

And in my own personal opinion, new players coming to OW2 didn’t understand how to actually play with Sombra’s original state

So Devs had to pretty much rework her to put the player In the teamfight

… and we know today that it didn’t end so well

genji with some slight modifications to base kit

Reaper. I mean, unless you consider negative backlash for him being too weak controversy.

Actually, nevermind, his kit is completely backwards and does not pair well with itself. People would just call him another useless DPS,

If Genji was added today, people would riot.

let them burn in the chaos!

Its an interesting question

Id say D.Va. Lots of mobility, pretty complex kit that is cohesive.

And i want to say Winton. Plently of mobility options, seemless, cohesive kit. However, I think his weapon and Ult might have been different if he was created in OW2.:+1:

Reinhardt will always be accepted because, despite how basic he is, everyone loves a tank who’s good at tanking. Even the people who complain about shooting him would rather have his shield than someone like Ball.

When the devs regret putting Genji out with the kit he has, you know the hero is messed up but people were just gaslight into accepting him. He is arguably more broken overall those days because basically most of his counters are troll picks or extremely exploitable, like Mei or Sym. Some people still think either counters him.

Launch Cassidy, Widow, Genji and Tracer would all 4 be considered broken and not well received. Soldier released today would never garner buffs - everyone would call him brainless like he is.

Cassidy was just grossly overtuned, the other 3 have remained issues since they released.

I remember that quote being out of context. Someone used it on me, but when I read it it was something like “Genji’s kit wouldn’t work for a hero now, but it works for Genji”, but all the anti Genji users on here took that to mean “Genji’s a mistake. One we could easily fix like we rework any character, but, uh, but, you see, we could just rework him like Hog or Bastion or Sombra because he’s a mistake but we aren’t because, uh…”

I think it was his double jump, specifically, said they didn’t regret his whole kit. Just that his double jump makes balancing him problematic. ht tps://dotesports.com/overwatch/news/overwatch-designers-answer-questions-15461

" “I feel like Genji double jump was my biggest regret,” Goodman said in a video produced by Ars Technica(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVxWCV-Mfqo). “It’s super awesome and I love it, but, man, that one thing makes him so difficult to balance because he’s so everywhere all the time. You never want to be not in the air double jumping.”

Nothing like “we shouldn’t have made him, but now there’s nothing we can do. Hey, why does Hog still have pig pen, lets just get rid of that.”

Dva, Tracer, Genji and Mercy. The rest would is too simple, I think and mainly do not have good mobility.

In lowest ranks, everything counters everything.
High ranks are an entirely different game.

Tracer would be the most overpowered release ever. People wouldn’t be able to play her on the playtest and she’d get GIGABUFFED nowadays. We’re talking stuff like 200 HP and four Blinks

I guess Pharah? Cause the “evil hitscans”. Reaper more likely
And obviously the Hog, cause the Ana is most popular support and she easily will disable his Breather on cooldown just by throwing the nade

None of them. If people cry about Reinhardt, there’s no hope for the community.

Low ranks are probably even more counterpicky than high ranks, and even in there Sym has nothing to do against Genji.

Are they? I haven’t noticed this when playing in gold.
Only hog and mauga get counterpicked down here in my experience (dva sometimes). And even then only if their own mistakes don’t kill them enough to make them swap first.

The only hero i frequently counterpick is genji, and only because no one else is getting him off my support buddy.
