Hello fellow Overwatch players, recently there’s been to many toxic forum posts over things (Mercy) so I think a little change of pace will help everyone.
in your opinion of all the character’s in the game who has the best and worst backstory, ik some of you have several for each category but pls pick 1 for each.
for me best is a hard choice many characters have decent backstories but very few stand out. if i had to pick maybe Genji or Sigma, both have decent backstories. but idk. for worst, in my opinion Dva. her story is that this annoying streamer girl who plays StarCraft got selected by the South Korean military to be a pilot for a highly experimental mech unit. not highly trained pilots, nor highly trained vehicle operators, or actual soldiers. they selected Gamers to pilot these expensive very important mechs. and now she’s not only a famous award winning esports player but a national hero and celebrity who still has the annoying gamer personality. Like if any character in ow is a Mary sue its Dva. easily the worst backstory in my opinion.
but I’m starting to go on a anti-Dva rant so ill end it here. let me know what you think.

we have a nice lore section that,. although it is often ignored, it often deals with this kind of theme. 
for me the worst is Kiriko. not because Kanezaka’s subplot isn’t interesting, but because they completely ruined the coherence between her in-game voicelines (grumpy and impatient), short story (wise and cautious) and cinematic (nice and clumsy). she just has a sense of justice as a hard link, but only because she’s a positive character. But otherwise they have definitely ruined she with this bipolarity in three formats of fiction. I wish they kept it consistent across all three. she did, even if she was grumpy throughout the cinematic.
The best one so far is SYmmetra. not only for the growth of her personality with the story stone by stone, but also in not converting her into a healer, as some people in the community wanted. I found it extremely consistent with her lore, with that comic where she will never be able to heal that little girl’s wound but she will use her technology to do what is in her power to do the right thing. I don’t mind seeing some of her old healing possibilities (such as illari’s healing turret) given over to other heroes, I prefer that symmetra remains a dedicated hero without healing, just as she has been since her non-support healer origins.

I really like Ramattra’s backstory. I don’t know if it’s actually “the best” from a writing/story telling perspective because I’m not really sure how to judge the quality of those things, but personally I just find it to be the most interesting one out of all the characters’ stories.
As for the worst one, D.va’s one is very uninteresting to me. There’s no drama or tragedy or anything, it’s just; she used to be a pro gamer, and is now a mech pilot.

I think D.Va’s is both the best and the worst. On paper, it’s pretty dumb: obnoxious streamer girl becomes military pilot at 19.
But if you think more deeply, it becomes, “Obnoxious streamer girl gets put in a robot by a government desperate to save their coastal cities from a ghostly robot colossus, nearly dies multiple times, but has to keep smiling and saying vapid stuff for morale-boosting films and interviews, until eventually she just adopts a ‘Aw, what the hell! Life is a game!’ attitude to cope with the fact that everyone is counting on her and she could die suddenly in a ball of fire at any time.”

Yeah, this is pretty much what i mean. OP’s interpretation is incredibly surface level and not charitable to the full scope at all. They basically got fooled by the streamer persona—which is, in a way, the goal of MEKA

Sigmas and Brigittes are probably my favorites. Sigmas because how intense it is and Brigs because its “cozy.”
As for worst, DVa and Kiriko. DVa for the same reasons you stated and Kiriko because I have no idea what she is supposed to be. Kirikos teasers, cinematic and in game appearance all give me different vibes from each other.
That is admittedly a way more interesting way to look at D.va. I never thought to look more deeply at her since she never drops the annoying gamer girl persona or hints at there being something below the surface. Or maybe she does and I just never noticed since I was too annoyed by hearing her spamming “is this easy mode?” in every match.

some of the lore is kind of wierd like reinhardts crusader squad. a german unit of steel wearing armor troops with shields and melee weapons… what… not guns?
then you have the common tropes like widowmaker being almost exactly like the black widow. brainwashed assassin trope.
oh and speaking about that who would win? black widow vs widowmaker
Dvas is a bit too trope-y…the Asian kid saving world in mechanical suit/team thing (I think power rangers…and I hated power rangers)….I wouldn’t call it worst though…

She does, just not so much in cosmetic voicelines. Which makes sense, since the implication is she’s streaming.
It’s mostly in spawn room hero and map interactions.
If you read that recent comic (New Blood?), she takes her role very seriously.

Hammon himself is absurd. He doesn’t even need to be present for his absurdity to shine.
There’s an interaction that goes like:
- Junker Queen: “So is there a hamster in your mech?”
- D.Va: “Umm… no…?”
- Junker Queen: “Sure…”
Hammond’s mere existence brings into question everyone’s concept of reality.

No, definitely Moira is the Mary Sue. At setup she constantly auto-voices to other heroes talking enough, like to Rein and Mercy. She is the best dps on the support roster and burst heals and can disappear. She’s also the highest value for lowest skill since she came out.

nah its definitely dva. she’s an award winning esports player and an esports campion, famous streamer, famous meka pilot, national hero, celebrity, good mechanic, etc. she’s good at everything, everyone likes her, nothing bad happens to her, etc. She’s a Mary sue!
Yeah, so looks like my original assumption was correct. People fall for her Hannah Montana alter ego and don’t actually bother to do real character analysis with D.Va.

We do plenty. There have been hints since this game came out. I’ve made myriad threads on it, I’m pretty sure. It’s just not in your face like practically everything else in this game.
we do not. in every appearance, voiceline, interaction, etc. its the Dva personality talking, not Hana.
We never ever see the real Hana, its just a thing Dva fans use to try and deflect valid criticism’s of the Character. she is a bad, poorly written character. people struggle to like her since she’s a bad character. she’s overwatch closest equivalent to a Mary sue, and it shows. Dva could be better if blizzard would fix her flaws and develop her character. Like make her fail, make her lose, make something bad happen to her and develop her character. Or have the real hana take more center stage then the dva personality, etc. Dva needs better writing to fix her flaws as a character.
