Overwatch takes place in the mid-2070s (2074 - 2076), which is 50 or so years in the future.
Juno, who is listed as 19, was born in the mid-2050s which is 32 or so years in the future.
I don’t know about you all, but speaking for myself, I don’t think 19, 32, or even 50 years is long enough for a ‘Martian’ to act like Earth is some alien planet.
Based on the information we currently have, we can suspect that Juno’s parents are from Earth.
We also know that Juno is Vietnamese, and since Earthlings couldn’t have been on Mars for more than, say, 50 - 52 years, wouldn’t Juno culturally be more Vietnamese?
It’s also safe to suspect that Juno’s grandparents are probably still living in Vietnam. Wouldn’t it make more sense for her to visit Vietnam instead of landing in some random spot on Earth? I mean, who wants to end up in the middle of nowhere when you could be enjoying some authentic pho with grandma and grandpa!
Speaking of landing in a random place, why did she land in a random place? If Earth colonized Mars, shouldn’t travel between the two planets be as simple as booking a flight?
Thanks for the video. We now know that humans were only on Mars for at least 19 years. But this video raises even more questions. Like…
How were they feeding themselves for 19 years?
What was their water supply?
Do you have any idea how big a ship they would need to feed a team of people for 20 plus years?!
Did they have little to no contact with Earth over a course of 19 years?
How did they not run out of oxygen?
We know that Juno is a ‘Martian,’ but genetically she is still an Earthling with an alleged Earthling diet. So why is she wearing a helmet while on Earth?
How did information about the ‘first Martian’ not get leaked out to Earth?
I understand that good story telling has never been one of Blizzard’s strengths but damn this is just lazy.
I like Zenyatta’s line on Horizon that there’s more omnics then humans in space and Juno just lands in Dorado.
She was born on Mars so technically she’s the first human born on Mars in a controlled atmospheric environment. So maybe she isn’t sure her body is climatised to Earth’s atmosphere, air quality etc.
Probably things they grew and as has been discovered there is water on mars but it is likely mostly underground.
Generally when you make a colony, you don’t take all the food you’ll ever need with you. Maybe they brought seeds?
I think that was covered, they had contact but it failed.
The video says they’re terraforming, which partially is oxygenating the atmosphere. The tech is “future stuff” so who knows how fast that goes?
A theory people here have is she’s not acclimated to most earth specific bacteria, diseases, and other microfauna. So straight up breathing the atmosphere or touching things would be a bad idea.
They might know? We got next to no additional lore.
I mean… it USED to be. They had GREAT stories in other IPs … but when you keep firing the story team it’s hard to keep a narrative.
i mean its a fictional game and yea the story seems basic and not very detailed. still its a cool story but any story about a future place is all just fiction really. most every fictional entertainement is kind of rediculous like star trek or star wars. they try to explain the science but its most psuedo science or however you spell that
i wouldnt try and wrap my head around it too much. my favorite sci fi movie bladerunner had advanced technology and human cloning in the year 2019 and we know of course that didnt happen. the first bladerunner was 1982 i think so them thinking 2019 would be so advanced is funny.
same with the cyberpunk 2077 setting. no way will we have full cyborg aumentation by that time… i think lol??? hopefully the human race will still be around
When she never been to Earth, why not? It´s drasticaly different from a Mars.
Not yet. Didn´t you watch the original story? They lost contact with Earth and are running low on supplies and everything.
You know, that right now, our technology is so advanced, that there are space stations in the orbit, where people can survive for months, right? Just now, one crew got stuck there untill 2025, it was not planned.
Technology is advancing very fast, I think it´s real to make stations on Mars or moon in next few decades.
Also, don´t forget - Overwatch is alternative universe - we don´t know, how far they were in 2024.
That’s what the future would have looked like if Atari didn’t drop the ball so hard it caused a butterfly effect lol.
Also when traveling between planets (or moons) they normally use gravity to help the ships out of orbit (uses less fuel and resistance factor etc) and due to their terraforming efforts on Mars they created deadly sandstorms that would hinder such travel even more.
I can’t speak to all of these questions, but besides the obvious that she mentions in game - difference in atmosphere - there’s also a million and one diseases and pathogens that she has never had exposure to and therefore would not have antibodies to fight. She’s basically immunocompromised for all intents and purposes. Even a cold could theoretically kill her.
And we already know from Moon ingame map, that they had a giant greenhouse full of plants on moon - not only growing food, but probably making oxygen too. They probably has that on Mars too xD
that is kind of funny since in the cyberpunk 2077 setting its all because of arasaka or one man creating a mega corporation that revolutionized technology. the cyberpunk setting was made by mike pondsmith in the late 80s/90s so japan was the big maybe country that would be the most advanced country. now its china for real?
There are simple answers to all of these questions but the main one is that Blizzard does not care. Juno was made to sell skins, not have relevancy in the lore even though dropping a lore bomb like Mars being colonized by humans should be a big deal but with no PvE game to capitalize on that, none of this actually matters.
