Its 2025, they havent officially said it. We all know that developer blog where they said they “couldnt deliver” the original PvE promises, but to this day, they havent said that ALL PvE is dead/scrapped. (Which we all know its 99.99% dead/scrapped)
You know, maybe they can get our trust back starting with this, just say it, and move on.
I think everyone knows theres no chance, but I have a hunch they’re purposely not announcing it just to keep it on the backburner incase they ever have the resources to make it reality in the future
They could. But they’ve also lied before. They flat-out lied and said, “PvE is definitely coming!” and then later revealed that they confirmed they’re scrapping it long before they communicated that PvE was coming to us.
There wasn’t really a “PvE team” so to speak. There were a bunch of people from the Narrative, Level Design and other PVE-related teams that were laid off. Some of them are still there. Some of them have actually rejoined Blizzard/Team 4 in the last few months.
Part of the problem with OW2 in the first place is that there wasn’t a separate team working on PVE - it was all just an expanded Team 4.
in theory no, not officially canceled. but there is little room for imagination of how much the original project has been devastated, which is completely different from what was promised in 2019. there is no need to make a novel of what jeff kaplan dreamed of for overwatch (or in any case the entire previous development team) but rather I would focus on how much embarrassment has been created today in mentioning the project. in some points:
invasion, precisely because it is too short and clearly poorly managed in the concept of long-term turnout (it does not take a genius to understand that making 4 difficulty queues for each mission means an excessive redistribution of users who, when they finish the achievements, will not play it again for a long time) is practically a demo of a story that dissatisfies EVERYONE: those who wanted a lore and those who wanted a dynamic and varied pve. and without the gain of something for their gameplay (in the past, leveling up = lootbox) it is a lost mode.
somewhat embarrassingly, gauntlet mode was presented at blizzcon 2023 as a test on how to enhance the pve experience. it always gave me the impression that they wanted to try a mode similar to the hub of plants vs zombies garden warfare 2 (very nice) but they simply did not put in the effort to diversify that experience and people perceived it as sterile. so the project was cut without even a comment on useful analysis derived from it for pve (it would have been really embarrassing to talk about it while invasion is stuck in a coming soon, right?)
in the end what did they get? well… overwatch “1”: the lore literally progresses through the new characters and their teasers (juno and orisa entered overwatch practically with an article in the newsblog).
archives in my opinion will return as part of the current “classic” development that they are carrying out in the last months (with 6v6 too), but that’s the point: we are at the starting point, the lore advances only for those who look for it in a wikia rather than in the game itself, and overwatch has simply returned to doing overwatch, updating itself as a pvp game. in a few words: its identical previous duty before entering maintenance mode after the release of echo in 2020.
it doesn’t surprise me that in china the game returns WITHOUT the “2” in the title (for those who don’t know, according to chinese laws it is netease that decides the setting of the games in their marketing, not blizzard directly): there is simply no ‘2’ that is really different from overwatch before, even more so since now they are aiming to bring back the 6v6 even just as arcade coexistence. let’s face it:
overwatch is not the first pvp game in history to become f2p and crossplatform/play
overwatch is not the first game to change its monetization system
overwatch is not the first game to change the technology of its development engine even at the cost of struggling to regain the stability that the previous internal engine had (do you remember the shameful period of non-guaranteed bugfixes in the first months of ow2?)
the only thing it did was call itself 2 without a valid reason, and use the whole 5v5 narrative to define it as “different” and live off its esports tournament machine (literally the only thing they wanted to start in October 2022). and frankly I find it more stupid to call it ‘2’ than to make them have equally immature problems like not being able to tolerate the name of a cowboy (indeed generating embarrassing streisand effects for those who want to read a linear lore).
honestly i would care if they released a story mode that isn’t a pve: they don’t know how to manage that department, so they might as well make a single player with the option of having other people in the party to change the ai difficulty (like in cuphead). damn, does it take a genius to notice this hunger for story modes instead of useless narrative replayability that simply no one asked for? pvp provides replayability, the narrative’s job should have been to define overwatch in its identity and passion. and even with plausible marketing, if set up like the starcraft 2 expansions (another blizzard game). whoever the marketing idiot is who thought up the current setting of overwatch deserves to end up like the developers of the day before: discredited and without a future in gaming industry.
I’d rather be told I’m not going to be given a gift and then surprisingly get one later, than to be told I’m going to get one, look forward to it, and then be told “woops I lied”.
Well, it’s not ALL dead/scrapped. They released 0.01% PvE content. So you won’t ever hear that ALL PvE is dead/scrapped because it’s simply not true.
They said their original PvE plans are gone and won’t ever make it into the game. What we saw at Blizzcon was fan fiction. What more do you need?
If you still have hope in PvE I doubt them saying “it will never come, we will never make it, there will never be PvE in this game, ever, and that is a fact” will change anything. Y’all will start believing it was a fake AI-video or sum.
Invasion is literally a demo to reassure those who were about to report overwatch 2 for false advertising.
what is even more annoying in my opinion is not so much the fact that in the end PVE does not work in terms of replayability… but that they still do not propose an alternative plan B to bring a story mode into the game. even as a single player with the OPTION of having other players, completable with AI if you are alone and whenever you want, as long as it was a good story (a COMPLETE Chapter, no coming soon without guarantees). see Starcraft, another blizzard game: nice esport AND narrative game.
