Overwatch is an international force of peace and progress. Focusing on where they are from is a deliberate choice from the story team. Your history and your home shape you more than you think. Don’t ever underestimate your heritage.

Yes, they’re stereotypes, nobody is denying that, but is that really an issue? Just because they’re stereotypes doesn’t diminish their character. I mean… I’m German and I have a big lovable guy who likes beer and adrenaline and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love Reinhardt and I love that he represents me. It feels good that a part of your culture is being acknowledged in some way. Do you have any character that represents where you or your family come from, or have certain ideals? Don’t deny that you love all of these characters!

just an interesting side note, the idea of the ninja in modern times (as opposed to the actual historical ninja) is largely a fiction created by the japanese tourism industry

there never was a ninja of the kind westerners are led to believe existed
