What's with Lucioball ranks?

I’m a gold player. I’ve been silver, and even bronze before, but currently my normal competitive is gold

So why the heck am I PLAT in Lucioball when my actual skill at the game hasn’t changed at all? Is everyone experiencing this rank inflation? I got placed at 2698 plat, a rank and number I don’t deserve. 2100 maybe. But why is it that there is such inconsistency?

inb4 “Don’t complain that you’re higher” - I’m not actually better at Lucioball than I am at competitive. In fact, I really was expecting to be placed silver since I would consider myself better at regular comp than this minigame.

Are these ranks just broken?

Maybe you did better than you thought. Normal game skill and Lucioball skill isn’t the same, so you could be better at Lucioball without even knowing! ^^

The games are different?

I’m not sure why people expect such different games to have similar SR.

Its completely different from the regular game, so you have a fresh mmr for lucio ball. Also being a Gm lucio will help you almost minimally in lucio ball.

You’re not using the same skillset as the normal game, and also, these mini-competitive modes usually have some inflated ranks.

Why? Idk. Less players I guess

I placed grandmaster on Xbox, and I suck at it (goalie wise) so not sure why I’m placed so high.

They are 2 completely different game modes and skill sets. Personally I always thought the game got lazy and just placed you around the same rank you were in comp.

The most recent Lunar New Year event placed me in masters for CTF despite me not being that good. The season before I hit masters so I assumed that’s why they placed me there. Plus I played all my placements with a friend who ended up getting put in gold

Last year I was a silver player and got plat, I did my friends placements and hes a gold player and he got diamond (1 match away from masters), not complaining tbh

I’m 3,800 currently on season 2, ( Finished season 1 top300 ish @ 4,100 )

I really enjoy playing lucioball. I have every year I’ve had to play it. Lucioball has completely different MMR compared to standard overwatch because it requires a completely different mindset.

I am nearly diamond in Lucioball which sounds about right relative to my normal rank. That being said, I believe in the case of Lucioball specifically, it has more to do with less players playing it, and more players who do not normally playing competitive playing competitive Lucioball. In other words, if you did above average, that is why. It seems very dependent on medals which are easy enough to farm as usually there are only a few goals per match and plenty of saves if you are the goalie and interceptions if you on the field. If you are just better than your two teammates, which is really easy to do, you can climb. I guess…

Opposite for me actually. Im 3.6k and placed plat for lucio ball.

I mean I once saw a guy in gold who got top 500 in competitive 3v3 so :woman_shrugging:t2:

It’s seemingly random

I placed 2800 in it and I can’t get out of 1800 in regular comp

meanwhile a guy on my friends list who is normally a mid-Gold comp player placed 3600+ in LB and is now up to 3900 and he never, ever plays Lucio in normal comp… sooo… idk.

one of 3 scenarios

  1. your team carried you (unlikely)
  2. the stats are so different that the way you play lucio ball is unintentionally hitting more requirements to rank.
  3. you play a role (goalie/scorer/flex) and it helps. EX: if youre a great goalie and blocking most attempts by the enemy to score youre carrying another team or filling a needed role that helps you rank.

btw i’m in plat and diamond but i got plat. mostly bc my team kept leaving the goal in 5 of my qualifiers but still. it’s accurate. i’m moving but up to diamond as we speak so it probably just means youre just great at it ^-^ keep it up!

CTF goes off your comp MMR, lucio ball doesn’t. (MMR is the hidden skill rating where the game thinks you belong, it is also not your sr)

I know the difference between MMR and SR, what I didn’t know is Lucioball doesn’t use it. I guess it has to do with CTF being more similar to regular ranked than Lucioball is, which makes sense

lol last year i was mid silver (now high plat) and i was 3100 in lucioball.

Me and my friend were placed diamond last year, but fell to 2800.
Now we placed with out other mate, he was the worst of us, scored many own goals and couldnt play the goalie for the life of him.

We got 2933, because of our last season end rank. He got 3300.
Thanks xD

This.

I’m normally a plat to diamond player, but my Lucioball skill is that of a GM. (Given last year, I finished in the Top 500)

Is there a huge disparity between the ranks on console vs. PC? I placed gold on PC, but did really well in my placement matches. Meanwhile, a friend who plays on Xbox placed diamond - this was his first season playing. Not knocking his ability, just wondering if there’s a significant inflation of SR on console vs. PC for some reason.
